PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

December 26, 2007

As we near the end of the year I want to take the opportunity to thank each of our members for another great year. We continue to be excited about the Alumni Association as we watch the membership grow. We thank all of you for your generous donations as well as donations we have received from local leagues, non-members, Western Region Clinic participants and District Administrators. It is only through these donations and memberships that we can continue to achieve our goal of improving the Western Region for umpires by umpires. We recently welcomed our 100th alum into our group and we are so very proud of what has been accomplished in just two short years.

In August 2007 we had our largest attendance ever for our Alumni Breakfast. We thank CA Districts 31 and Nevada 2 for again sponsoring the Breakfast. After breakfast we held our second Annual Membership Meeting where the membership elected a new Board of Directors to lead the group for the next two years. I was humbled by the support I received and knowing there still is much work to be done, accepted another term as your President. I am excited to work with Board Members, Bill Beebe (Vice President), Tony Cooper (Treasurer), Bruce Marcellus (Secretary) and Lee Batterman (Member At Large). We are also pleased to have Bill Carter remain on as the Association's Webmaster.

During the meeting members voted and approved a very important, new provision that will take this Association to the next level. It was presented and approved that beginning immediately membership in the Western Region Little League Umpire Alumni Association (WRLLUAA) will be open to any volunteer umpire who has umpired any Western Region Tournament, both Baseball and Softball. As an Association that seeks to be inclusive rather than exclusive this is an important step in our growth. While many of us always felt that this was the appropriate step to take we wanted to make absolutely certain that the Association was well grounded, had a specific vision and could properly handle and administer such a large undertaking. It was decided, after listening to the membership, that the time was right to expand opportunities. The membership discussed how we would assure that membership would only be for those who had received the honor of working a Western Region Tournament. It was agreed that since no viable documentation existed for the many Western Region Tournaments, that the honor system and peer pressure would be the guiding force. So, for those volunteer umpires who have umpired in a Western Region Tournament the Alumni Association looks forward to receiving your membership application which can be found on this website.

We are excited about this expansion and believe that with expanded membership we will continue to meet our vision of improving the instruction, opportunities and the amenities for volunteer umpires all around the Western Region.

I am also pleased to announce that the Cy Livoti Junior School Scholarship continues to grow and we look forward to receiving applications for the coming 2008 class.

The Board will be looking at possible improvements and expenditures as the new season progresses and we will keep you informed of developments. If there is something you would like to see the Association do, please do not hesitate to contact me via email at
LMBERN@HOTMAIL.com.

Here is to a healthy and happy New Year. Believe it or not it is time again to get the bones moving and get ready for another exciting and unpredictable Little League season.

Looking forward to seeing you on the field.

The Western Region Little League Umpire Alumni Association (WRLLUAA) was founded and remains dedicated to promoting, and educating through training, the Volunteer Little League Umpire.
The young volunteer umpire in Little League is the future of the umpire program. He or she must be well prepared to carry the torch into the future. It is through knowledge and training that the young volunteer umpire will be best prepared for a long and successful Volunteer Little League career.
To best promote these ideals, the WRLLUAA has set aside ten (10) full scholarships to the Junior Umpire School to be held at the Western Region Headquarters (open to individuals between 13-17 years of age) scheduled for June 23-29, 2007.
The scholarship application must be completed and returned to the address provided on the form by May 15, 2008. A committee established by the Board of Directors of the WRLLUAA will determine the scholarship recipients. Scholarship recipients will be notified if they qualified by June 1, 2007, and will have tuition for the school paid directly to the Western Region or reimbursed if the student has already made payment. Scholarships will go only to individual umpires and not to local leagues or districts.

WESTERN REGION LITTLE LEAGUE
UMPIRE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION
With the approval of both Little League and the Western Regional Headquarters we are pleased to announce the formation of the Western Region Little League Umpire Alumni Association (WRLLUAA).
This Association was created by umpires solely for umpires at the Western Regional facility in San Bernardino, CA. All monies donated and collected will be used exclusively for the improvement of the training facility for umpires at the Western Region as well as other items determined to better the experience for all umpires who attend training or are honored to be selected to umpire at the Western Region Little League Baseball Tournament in San Bernardino, California.
All of the funds collected will be separated from all other funds within the Western Region and will be spent pursuant to determinations made by the Board of Directors established by the membership of the WRLLUAA. All donations are tax deductible. Membership is open to all those who have had the honor of umpiring at any Regional Baseball or Softball Tournament in the Western Region. Donations are also welcome and appreciated. Initial response has been overwhelming. The first membership meeting took place on August 13, 2005 in San Bernardino, California. At that meeting,  members were elected to the Board of Directors. To view the Board Members, click on the "Board" link on the left. 2008 Umpire Registry is now open
Little League Baseball’s Umpire Registry offers Little League umpires a smart way to stay on top of their game. By joining the Umpire Registry, umpires immediately become part of a unique information network charged with enhancing umpire services for Little League players everywhere. “We started the Umpire Registry to provide umpires an easy and effective communication channel to stay updated about their game. The response has been tremendous,” Andy Konyar, umpire consultant at Little League Baseball International, said. “Rule books are literally sent right to members’ doorsteps and through our regular newsletter, umpires can gather industry news and information.”

The Umpire Registry provides an opportunity for umpires to stay updated on rules and regulations, exchange ideas, and offer suggestions that will continually improve them. Umpires can access the latest information on clinics, seminars, rule interpretations, regulations updates and more. According to Mr. Konyar, tools like the Fair Ball newsletter are providing umpires a network with which they can correspond and receive peer feedback on situations happening out in the field. “Umpires send in real situations right from the field and ask for feedback, Mr. Konyar said.” The situations and responses also become valuable tools for improving the profession and educating volunteer umpires.”

The Umpire Registry also maintains an updated file of members, providing an excellent referral resource to league officers and tournament directors. Umpires also receive: Copies of all Little League Baseball Rule Books A copy of The Umpire in Little League A copy of Little League Baseball’s The Right Call An official Little League Baseball Registry Identification Card, Certificate and Patch Subscription to The Umpire Registry Newsletter, Fair Ball, and a copy of ERules. A listing in the Little League Baseball Registry of Umpires can register online for a one-year membership for just $25.00.
