Milford Hunters 4 Total Renovations 1
WALLINGFORD — The team’s name has changed, but the results were much the same Thursday night under the lights at Pat Wall Field.
The Milford Hunters, formerly FPA, won their sixth Wallingford Twilight League title in the past seven seasons with a 4-1 victory over Total Renovations.
“It’s huge,” Hunters coach Tom Hanley said. “Any championship is a big deal, especially when you play a team like Total Renovations.”
Silky-smooth southpaw Brendan Wyman scattered four hits over 6 2/3 innings as Milford swept the best-ofthree series. Ryan Antonino and Ryan De Polo smacked RBI singles, while Jeff Maurutis and Nick Czekaj contributed two hits apiece for the Hunters, who also won Wednesday’s opener 4-1.
Milford left 11 runners on base in the game, including two in the first inning when Total’s TJ Dela Sota robbed Alberto Martinez with a diving backhand catch in right-center field.
The Hunters went ahead 1-0 on Antonino’s run-scoring single in the top of the fourth inning before batting around for three runs in their fifth. Czekaj and Maurutis started the big inning with singles and Martinez walked to load the bases and chase Total’s Ricky Jackson, who had seven strikeouts in his first start of the season. Reliever Ricky Marrero couldn’t get out of the jam. He walked in a run and Milford used De Polo’s RBI single and an error to build a 4-0 advantage. Wyman (4-0) cruised through the first six innings before running into trouble in the bottom of the seventh. Total’s Rich Cassella launched a solo home run to start the inning. Wyman got two quick outs, but walked pinchhitter Gary Duhamel.
“I don’t throw hard,” said Wyman, who finished with five strikeouts and two walks. “I’ve just got to throw a lot of strikes and hit my spots. That’s how I get the job done. I thought I did pretty well. In the seventh inning, I got a little tired.”
Hanley brought in lefty Matt Hennessey. He walked two straight to put the tying run on first base, but fanned the pesky Dela Sota to end the game.
“We had a little bit of fight at the end, which is good,” Total Renovations coach Dan Kennedy said. “You have to tip your cap to (Milford). They did what they had to do today. We had a fun year and a great year. It kind of gets me excited for next year. I always think I’m going to hang it up. It makes you want to hang around for a little longer.”
Mike Townsend had a single and double for Total, while Ozzie Ramos ripped a single.
“It would have been nice to win, but the reality is you win some, you lose and we’ll be putting on the cleats next year ready to go again,” Ramos said. “We’ll take another crack at it next year.”
Milford improved to 21-31 overall with Thursday’s victory, while Total Renovations moved to 17-8. The Wallingford season is over, but the summer will continue for both teams next month.
Milford will compete in the NABF regionals in Salisbury, Md., while Total Renovations and the Cheshire Mustangs will represent the Wallingford league at the AABC Stan Musial State Tournament in Torrington next week.
Milford strikes first
By Tim Kolehmainen Record-Journal staff
Milford Hunters 4 Total Renovations 1 WALLINGFORD — The opening game of the Wallingford Twilight League best-of-three championship series seems an odd time to give a pitcher his first start of the season. Yet that’s exactly what both the Milford Hunters and Total Renovations did. One was by necessity, the other by design. Wednesday night at West Side Field, intention and Jared Rohrig overcame need and Ozzie Ramos as the Hunters (20-3-1) edged Total (17-7) by a 4-1 score to gain the series advantage. Rohrig, the longtime Hunters’ ace, started his first game since coming back from an elbow injury, giving Milford manager Tom Hanley the lift his club needed. He allowed only one hit in five innings, walking one and fanning five. Chris Arden came on to pitch two perfect innings in relief for Milford, fanning two. Right elbow wrapped in a black sleeve, Rohrig’s fastball was humming and his slider had late breaking movement. For the first three frames, he was untouchable, inducing weak ground balls to the right side of the infield. “I just wanted to throw strikes the first time out. Get ahead of hitters and get groundballs,” said Rohrig, who threw mostly fastballs until tiring in the fifth inning. Total didn’t get its first baserunner until Rohrig drilled Rob Cassella in the shoulder with two outs in the fourth. Meanwhile, Ramos was thrown into the fire after Total Renovations played two games the previous two nights to advance to the finals, including an 11-inning marathon in Tuesday’s semifinals in which they burned both ace Rick Marrerro and No. 2 Dan Kennedy. Yet Ramos stymied Milford for three innings before they were able to pick up his unusual herky-jerky delivery and different release points. In 5 2/3 innings, he gave up six hits and four runs, walking two and striking out one. “He really came through,” said Kennedy. “He junked them and did a great job.” “I can’t say enough about Ozzie Ramos. He came out there and threw strikes and mixed it up,” said Hanley, whose club finally got its first hit against Ramos on Ryan Antonino’s infield single with one out in the fourth. Antonino promptly stole second and scored on Jeff Maurutis’ line single to left. Maurutis then stole second and scored on a single to center by Nick Czekaj to give the Hunters a 2-0 lead. “We had to play a little small ball,” said Hanley. “You’ve got to get on base and get them around.” In the bottom of the fourth, Wink Farrow led off with a clean single to right, the only hit for Total. Rick Jackson walked and Willie Rios sacrificed both runners into scoring position. Mike Townsend plated Farrow with a grounder to second, but Rohrig reached back to strike out Gary Duhamel and end the threat. The Hunters tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to put the game away. Paul Bottigliero doubled in a run and Ryan De Polo poked an RBI single off reliever Rob Cassella. Rohrig, in his sixth year with Milford, pitched in last year’s WTL series-clincher, losing 1-0 to Liam Ohlmann and the Downtown Merchants. As he recalled, it was the first time in his stint with the Hunters that they had failed to win the league playoff title. This year’s series pits the top two teams in the WTL, as the Hunters are the No. 1 seed and Total Renovations is the No. 2 seed. During the year, Milford took three of four head-tohead, losing only the finale. “We know who they are and they know who we are,” said Marrero. Wednesday’s Game 1 victory gives the Hunters a leg up in the best-of-three series. Game two is at 8 tonight at Pat Wall Field and Milford is expected to send lefty Brendan Wyman to the mound. Wyman (3-0) is one of many Hunters who play college ball, pitching for Post University. Total ace Marrerro (6-1), just one day removed from a seven inning relief stint in their 11-inning semifinal victory Tuesday night, will pitch in a must-win situation. “We’ll get into these guys, but they’re tough. They have a lot of good pitchers,” said a confident Marrero. Game 3, if necessary, will be played Sunday at 6 p.m., also at Pat Wall Field.
