REPORT FROM KONA
Steve Smith
The 4:00 A.M. wake up call Ironman morning is always stunning. Your eyes pop open and the skin begins to tingle from hyperventilating. The sky is still black and the noise from the surf crashing under your hotel window, all are part of the reality check your brain is going through as you suddenly realize that this morning is the day you have been preparing for since October of "07". As one of Mike Riley"s opening songs at last years carbo dinner said so well, "RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW". It"s my 11th wake up call and I still go throught the litany of race day questions: What did I forget to do? Did I prepare the way I should have? What will be the surprise I didn't anticipate? Who is here in the age group that is --------, and the questions go on and on.
My wife, the real ironman in the family, knows the drill by heart. Car keys, check; timing chip, check; equipment bags, check; post race cloths, check; goggles, check; water, check; check, check, check, and check! We have a routine. It doesn.t change. We know ,instinctively, what to do next, even down to where to wait for me after I'm released from the medical tent - 2 hours later.
The most agonizing part of this event is everything that happens prior to the cannon shot. The concussion smacks you in the side of the head and quickly brings your mind into focus. If you don't start swimming, you will instantly be pommelled by the other 1800 swimmers that all want to occupy the same square foot of water you do. This year, (more than others), as the clock hit 6:57 a.m., the 1800 all started crowding the start line. This compressed the field so tightly you were unable to tread water, and staying afloat was impossible without kicking everyone around you. A "newbie" next to me was genuinly terrified, Another guy and I pushed the crowd back a little and tried to re-assure her that it would be ok when the swim started. Wrong!
Luis and Mark need to incorporate self defense into the program. Kicking, punching, grabbing, and dunking were the order of the day. "08" was by far the worst swim crowd I have ever been in, at any race. Others said the same, later. But, in spite of the aggression, I still managed to swim 60:33.
T1 was uneventful. The volunteers were in their usual "just let me know what you need, and you'll get it!' mode. Has anyone ever asked if the quarter mile we have to run back to our bikes on the pier, is deducted from the run? That is tough. I ran carrying my shoes instead of wearing them. Worked great!
Up Palani and left on Kuakini, right on Makala, right on Queen K, right on Palani, left on Kuakini. "u" turn at the top, back down Kuakini, right on Palani (damn - I hate that street), left on the Queen K, and away we go. Past the marina, Energy lab, airport. Tail winds all the way. Average speed was over 23 mph as we made the turn UP to Hawi. I felt strong all the way up and the memory of the excruciating cramps from "04" never entered my head. I was eating, drinking, and taking "Salt stik" capsules like never before. I know I have the highest sweat rate of anyone, anywhere, so I was being cautious. I came down from Hawi with the tailwind pushing the speed into the mid and upper 30"s, until the winds started. Every weatherman should spend a week on that stretch of the Queen K, just to experience the only place in the world where the wind can blow (and suck) in all four directions at the same time. I can't remember the winds ever being worse.
Mile 70 was like being stabbed in both legs at the same time. Uber-cramps! They hit fast and (omg) painful. I could not pedal. I coasted to the side of the road and had to stop, or fall over. In spite of "upping" the salt consumption and fluid intake, the cramps hit again. I immediately reached for my salt and popped one in my mouth --- and chewed it. The relief is almost instantaneous. 15 seconds later the pain was gone, the legs were back, and I was off. But not for long. Round 2 of the cramp problem came less tham 15 minutes later. I did the same drill, got the same relief, After this time the cramps did not come back, I upped the intake even more.
T2 was interesting as I followed Fernanda Keller from Makala to the pier. Nice tan!!
The bike split was 5:30, about a minute slower that last year.
My run is always painful to watch. I know when I start that it will be a long and painful 4 hours. It always is. This year was no different. Run to the aid station. Walk, eat, drink, - repeat 26 times. 4:06 and I was back in the med tent, where I have a reserved post- race cot, Equiped with the best med staff anywhere, treating me like I was the only one they had to take care of. This happens everytime I do the race. 2 hours and 2 liters of saline and I'm good to go. I can honestly say that I never leave "anything" out on the course. I am always amazed at the finishers that can sprint down Alii to the finish. How much did they have left?
It was still a good day. My goals were to break 11 hours (10:50), with a podium finish (2nd) and run fast enough to qualify for Boston. Missed Boston by 6 minutes.
I wouldn't trade this experience for anything!
As our plane departed Kona, Monday afternoon, I looked back down on the Queen K and said "good by!"
HAVE A GREAT DAY!
