Torrey Pines (13-6 overall, 13-3 in SD County) fought hard and kept the fans on the edge of their seats in an attempt to repeat their 2007 CIF championship.  The Islanders came out strong and scored 4 unanswered goals.  The refs were calling a tight game and the Falcons took time to adjust.  The half ended with the Islanders up 4-0.

Things remained tight through the third quarter as the Islanders’ defense continued to stifle the Falcon attack until mid way through quarter when JoJo Wilkinson open things up with an unassisted goal.  This ignited the team and put the momentum on the Falcons’ side.  Things got interesting as Geordie Shafer converted an excellent pass from Erik Meyers and Erik Samuels had a strong quick shot find its way to the back of the net.  The score was now 5-3 with 9 minutes remaining in the game.  Then came the winning goal from the Islanders’ top scorer, #6, who managed a 3 goal game.

With the score 6-3,  only 6 minutes remaining and the Coronado defense playing extremely tough, the Falcons could have packed it in.  But not this team, they responded with another goal from Geordie Shafer and Brandt Riedman contributed with a fantastic shot, a Riedman classic, to make the score 6-5 with 2:32 left.  The Islanders controlled the face-off and kept the ball until Coco Dupont made a steal.  A Falcon time out was called with just 39 seconds remaining.  Unfortunately, it was not the Falcons’ night and we could not convert.

The defense fought hard and held the Islanders’ to 5 shots on goal in the second half.  It was a team effort led by Matt Turner with help from Danny Schatz, Alex Sawaya, Coco Dupont, Casey Allred and Bishop Thorpe.

Congratulations to the team for a great season.  We are all so proud of the team and how they played each game.  Good luck to the seniors with their future endeavors and best of luck to the 2009 Falcons.
