Sharks lose one to the fuzzy ball
It is with great sadness that the Sharks announce that longtime Shark Katie B. is taking the summer off from softball to focus on her tennis game. This is coming after completing a stunning freshman season for the Grissom Lady Tigers where she led the team in batting average (.404) and was named their MVP. Katie was also named to the All-Tournament Team in the Area Tournament at the end of the season. The Sharks are very proud of her accomplishments and wish her well on the hard courts. Although we do expect to see her back at some point because everyone knows that diamonds are an Ocho's best friend :-P

The 12U Sharks won the National Softball Association (NSA) World Series championship in Birmingham, AL. The Sharks played ten games in four days in 100 plus degree heat to win the tournament, four on the the final day. The team lost their first two pool games to the Nashville Crusaders and the West Pines Diamond Diamond Dusters (Miami, FL) only to storm back during the elimination rounds. The team won their next four games beating quality teams including, Hixon Cyclones (Chattanooga, TN) 12-2 / Blount Co. Blaze (Blount County, AL) 6-0 / Cullman Crushers (Cullman, AL) 10-0 / Birmingham White Lighting, who placed 2nd in the NSA State, 4-3. The sharks then lost in the finals of the winners bracket to the Trussville Red Storm (Champions of the NSA Alabama State tournament) 11-4 forcing the team to beat the Louisiana Patriots, Denham Springs, LA 4-0 in the finals of the losers bracket for an opportunity to play the Red Storm again for the Championship. With their backs against the wall, having to beat the Red Storm twice, the team came together and would not be denied the championship. The Sharks put on a dominating performance beating the Red Storm in the first game 9-0 and then followed that up with an 11-3 win. Those wins were punctuated with several key defensive plays, incredible hitting performances and outstanding pitching. It was a total team effort with significant contributions in the championship run coming from every member of the team.

Sharks Christmas Party a Huge Success

The sharks summer and fall teams held their Christmas Party on December the 6th with more than 50 people in attendance. Almost all of the players were in attendance as well as a large portion of their families. It was noted that Coach Jerry's competive streak showed during the dirty Santa gift exchange, becoming downright aggressive in the heat of the game. It was also noted that coach Steve's chicken estimating skills could use some work.

The coaches appreciate all the hard work you girls put in this year and are looking forward to alot of wins and fun in 2006.

12U Sharks go 5-0 to win the 14U Fall Throwdown in Franklin, TN
Behind incredible pitching , near perfect defense and exceptional hitting the 12U sharks went 5-0 to win the USSSA fall throwdown in the 14U age division. There were numerous highlights to the weekend, including a pitching exhibition put on by Hilary. The defense was airtight with several highlight film plays made by Natalie. The Sharks won 5 straight games to win the tournament and qualify for the USSSA 2006 World Series. Over the 5 game span, the Sharks outscored their opponents 26-10. It was a complete team effort, with someone different coming up with a timely hit or awesome play in each game. It seemed like Katie led off every game with a hit while putting on a bunting and slap hitting clinic. M.C. had a number of RBIs for the weekend and Sally and Emily each had 2 RBIs in the semi-final game. Stephanie came in to make the game ending catch in the semi-final. The Sharks beat a formidable Middle Tennesse High Voltage team for the second time in as many days in the final by a score of 3-0. Hannah made the final out of the tournament, ranging to her left at third to cut off a soft fly-ball in front of Natalie. Overheard after the game, Natalie said, "hey, that was mine!"

In their last tournament of the summer, the Huntsville Sharks earned the 2nd place trophy in the ASA Blues Bash II in Decatur, AL. This tournament was a great opportunity for the Sharks in getting to play the NSA Class-A State Champions and the 2nd place, Huntsville Sparks. The Sharks had to beat the Sparks to advance to the championship game and they did so in a tight one, 7-6. The Sharks appreciate the support they received this tournament from Lindsey, Natalee, and Sara. These girls blended quickly to help make us a better team.
This tournament was also a unique opportunity for Natalee in that she was playing her first fastpitch softball. She's been playing baseball all her life and has decided to switch to softball and we're glad she did. Natalee did an excellent job filling in for the Nat who had broken her thumb in the USSSA State tournament the weekend before.

The Sharks placed 3rd in the USSSA State tournament at the Huntsville Metro Kiwanis Sportsplex. To earn this trophy, the Sharks had to play four games back-to-back on Sunday when the Heat Index was over 100 degrees. Their conditioning and efforts to keep hydrated paid off and kept everyone on the field throughout the scorched afternoon.

There were mega-highlights from the Athens Invitational. This team played seven games in three days, scored 74 runs, won five straight games, and placed second in the tournament. Here are just some of the scenes from the weekend that I hope we never forget: Watching Lindsey’s first at bat with this Sharks team, an RBI double to left field. Ashlee’s first HR over the fence, an estimated 210’ shot over the 200’ foot fence (which is the average left field distance of most college fences). Watching Megan’s smart base running, moving around the bases and putting herself in position to score, after getting hit after hit. Seeing Katie slap another ball up the middle and rounding first, sliding to a halt and scrambling back to the base and cracking up laughing. Natalie grabbing that Rocket Tech, determined to hit, and driving the ball between the first and second basemen for another RBI double. Watching Meredith cover center field like she owned it. Watching Sara’s hard grounder to first that ignited our 6-run inning in the Championship game. Watching Danielle pitch one of her best games ever to put us into the Championship game; her pitching and defense and the defense behind her that left the Flames scoreless until we had rung up 11 runs. Watching Ashlee’s second line drive HR sail to the center field fence, striking the top and bouncing over for her second (over the fence) HR of the tournament. Watching Jana turn a bunt into a home run and then staggering away from the plate in exhaustion. Watching Meredith end a double with a pop-up slide at second. Watching Hannah slap hit or hit for power, on an as needed basis. Watching Megan move to her left to cut off a ball hit to the gap and gunning the runner down at first. Watching Lindsey flip a ball to second to get the lead runner. Watching Danielle spin and sit after catching a hard line drive back to the mound. Watching Hannah gun down runner after runner at second and third, then walking into the dugout, looking at me in bewilderment and exclaiming, “you’d think they would have learned by now”.

Father's Day Classic
Thanks to Tropical Storm Arlene, the 3rd Annual Father's Day Classic in Athens, Alabama was rained out on Sunday. The Sharks were able to get their pool play games with the Sparks, Germantown Red Devils, and Ardmore Fear Factor. Due to heavy rains Sunday night, the tournament was cancelled on Sunday. Several of the teams were able to finish the tournament with games on June 20 and 21, but the Sharks were unable to participate due to excessive schedule conflicts.
