Tiger Cap Perfect Fall Season with Championship!!!

This fall, the Tigers played in the Regis University Fall Baseball League. The Tigers played against players and teams from various Denver Metro schools such as Arvada West, Wheat Ridge, Faith Christian, Machebeuf, and Regis.

The Tigers capped a perfect fall season with two wins this past weekend to earn the Fall Baseball Title. On Saturday, the Tigers won their semi-final match-up behind the strong pitching performance of Junior Connor Meining. Meining tossed five shutout innings, striking out 5.

On Sunday, the Tigers squared off against Arvada West (5A) in the title game. Once again, the Tiger pitching staff’s domination resulted in a Tigers 3-1 victory in the championship game. The 1-2 Junior punch of Josh Tinnon and Evan Genders once again shut down opposing batters while averaging well over one strike out per inning. Josh Tinnon, threw 6 2/3 scoreless innings, striking out 10 Wildcat batters. Gender relieved Tinnon for the final 2 1/3 innings striking out 6 Wildcats.

The Fall Ball Championship follows a Legion B State Runner-Up finish this past summer. The Tigers continue to improve and push hard towards a solid 2009 spring campaign. Congratulations to the Tigers for a PERFECT fall season!

Mandatory Spring Baseball Meeting!

There will be a MANDATORY baseball meeting for all student athletes who are interested in playing baseball this upcoming spring.

The meeting is scheduled for November 6, 2008 at 7:00pm in the Commons at HFHS.

The following topics will be on the agenda: Coors Field 2009, Spirit Pack Orders, Off Season Workouts, and Omaha Summer 2009. In addition, we will talk about the need for parent involvement with Tiger Baseball Club. The program is growing and become far too big for a coaching staff and one ambassador to manage. We will be looking for volunteers who will be willing to help on the following small committees: Spring Baseball Banquet, Coors Field Ticket Sales, 2009 Omaha Trip, Home Gate Attendants and Alumni Game. In order for our program to continue to offer these opportunities that are unique to our players, we need everyone’s help. Please give serious consideration on how you are willing to help support the Tiger baseball program!

It is recommended that the student-athlete and his parent(s) are present for the meeting. But it is required that at least one person is present whether it is the student-athlete or the parent.

Thanks, Coach Cowell

Tigers Finish Great Season Playing in the Legion B State Championship Game!!!

The Tigers lost a close game to the always tough Eaton Reds in the Semi-finals of the Legion B State Tournament.  However, the Tigers returned the next day unphased and ready to play against the Valley Vikings.  Junior, Josh Tinnon, threw a complete game two-hitter while the Tiger bats heated up again.  The Tigers walked away with a convincing 12-1 mercy rule victory to advance to the Legion B State Championship Series.

The championship series was a rematch with Eaton.  The Tigers struck early with back to back doubles in the second inning from Matthew Lopez and Josh Tinnon.  Starter Sean Urban was efficient through the first four innings allowing only two hits and no runs.  In the bottom of the fifth with two runners on and two outs, the Tigers committed a fatal error that kept the inning alive.  The Reds promptly drove in five unearned runs on three hits. The Reds were able to add one more unearned run in the bottom of the sixth on their way to a 6-1 victory.

Despite falling just short of the championship, the Tigers had a great season finishing 33-11 (highest win total in summer ball history). In addition, it is the first time ever a varsity baseball squad has played in a state championship game!!  Congrats to all the players for a great season!  Everyone looks forward to a strong offseason committment to bring home that first every baseball title!!!

TIGERS Rally to Defeat #1 Ranked Reds at Coors Field

For the third straight year, the TIGERS played one of its non-conference games at Coors Field.  This year, the #5 TIGERS squared off against the #1 Reds of Eaton.  The match-up of top five teams did not disappoint those fans in attendance.

The TIGERS kept the Reds scoreless in the top of the first.  In the bottom of the first, Evan Genders led off with a full count double ripped to right center field.  The second batter of the inning, Jacob Gonzales stroked a 1-0 pitch to the same part of the ball park for an RBI double.

The one run lead held up until the top of the third when Eaton was able to plate their first run of the game against Senior Stefan Beck.  The TIGERS promptly answered with a run of their own in the bottom half of the frame.  Sophomore, Evan Genders hit a sharp single up the middle to score Senior Brian Boothe.

The TIGERS lead held until the top of the fifth inning, when Eaton drilled a ball deep in the right field corner for an RBI triple. In the top of the sixth, Eaton took their first lead of the game scoring three runs capped by a two out two run double.

The score was 5-2 going into the bottom of the sixth inning.  Jacob Gonzales led off the inning with a walk.  The next two batters struck out.  With two outs, Jacob Quintana walked.  With two runners aboard, Freshman Rob McCandlish hustled out an infield single resulting in one run.  The TIGERS then scored one more run on a wild pitch.  At the end of the sixth inning the score was 5-4 and the stage was set for an incredible finish.

Senior, Devan Pries, settled in after a shaky sixth inning to pitch a scoreless seventh.  Reds pitching promptly recorded the first two outs of the inning.  The order flipped to the top and sophomore, Evan Genders, stepped to the plate.  Evan stroked a single through the infield for his third hit of the game.  Jacob Gonzales followed Evan with a single of his own to put the tying and winning runs on base with two outs.  Junior, Matthew Lopez was re-enter to face the hard throwing McLavey.  Eaton threw a first pitch fastball that Lopez rocketed into right center to score both Genders and Gonzales for a game winning walk off triple!

The win was the first for the TIGER program over the Eaton Reds.  It is the second time in as many years that the TIGERS have beaten a team ranked #1 in the state.  GREAT WIN FOR THE TIGER BASEBALL PROGRAM!!!

Congrats to each player as it took a total team effort to win this big game.  The TIGERS will square off against #2 Faith Christian on Tuesday at Kevin Ritz Field.  Good Luck to the TIGERS as they attempt to knock off another of the State’s best teams!

TIGERS HELP DELIVER FOOD BASKETS TO LOCAL FAMILIES
2007 Elks
On December 14th and 15th the TIGER baseball program once again stepped up to the plate this holiday season and helped the local Elks Club 2438 assemble and deliver food baskets to local families in need.

Over 35 players participated in the event. Due to the overwhelming participation by the TIGERS, the local elks club was able to increase the number of food basket deliveries from 45 last year to over 90 this holiday season!  Elks Club member, Pat Kennedy, was speechless regarding the turnout and support of the players.  Mrs Kennedy was very impressed by the “leadership”, “organization” and “teamwork” of all the young men.  Bob Heller, last year’s food drive organizer stated that “They are an army of angels with big hearts.”  There is no doubt that each player made a tremendous impact not only on the families who received the food baskets but also the members of the Elks Club.

Thank you to all the players who participated.  We look forward to helping the Elks once again next Christmas.

Again, another example why Holy Family High School is such a special place and the TIGER baseball program is one of the best not only on the field but off too!!

Great job TIGERS and a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS to all!!!
