THURMONT LITTLE LEAGUE: Message from the Board & Other Site News

FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT:

OPENING DAY 2008...

Hello, welcome to the 2008 Little League Baseball/Softball Season!

My name is Dave Little and I am in my third season as President of Thurmont Little League. The season just kicked off this past Saturday and what a busy day it was. The weather didn’t cooperate completely, but we were able to get 10 of the 11 games in. I would like to thank all the volunteers who helped make opening Day 2008 a huge success. Thanks to the volunteers who worked on the fields to get them ready, the concession workers (who were very busy all day). All managers, umpires, team moms, coaches, board members, all parents, and anyone who I am forgetting.

The purpose of this link on the web is to help keep everyone posted on what’s happening in T.L.L. We currently have 36 total teams this season. We now have an American Legion Baseball team age 19 & under that will start in June this season. As you can imagine this is a scheduling nightmare for games as well as practices. I want to thank all the Managers/Coaches who work together to share the fields. I do realize that some people feel that the younger players get shortchanged on field space. Please keep in mind that all leagues and age groups are equally important, however it is much harder for an older team to practice without a pitcher’s mound or backstop (safety). I’ve received several e-mails from parents who don’t feel this is fair, and I sympathize with you.  However, this is the way it has to be. We had a tee ball field until the town took it out for the new police station. I worked with the town to replace it; however the 2 options didn’t work. They were the spot where the tennis courts used to be (too wet) or in the parking lot near the softball fields. I thought this would be a safety issue, and so did the town. We have tried to find a way, but until we can develop the property behind the minor and little league fields this is the way it has to be.

In regards to the above mentioned property, I am going to apply for permits to at least grade the field and get it level; this will provide more space, but not actual fields. The next step will be to add fields, a very costly expense to do right. But this is in our plans, so please be patient.

Thanks again for all the support I get from everyone out there, just please remember that this is YOUR league, it does not exist without all of us, and we must work together to make this the best league that we can. If you have any comments or suggestions, please contact me.

Thanks again, Dave
