Team America 91 Red - Fall 2006
TRAINING - This team has had extensive training primarily from Clyde Watson since they were 8 yrs old. Clyde is one of the best Trainers Nationally.   Clyde’s time and popularity has limited his time with the team and we have hired a new Trainer, Karim Moumban. Karim has been our Goal Keeper Trainer for approx. 1 1/2yrs and is an outstanding trainer who focuses on technique, work rate, movement of the ball, and strength and conditioning. He played for his country’s National Team in Cameroon and has played professionally in France, Singapore, Thailand, Costa Rica, Malyasia and here in the US for the Baltimore Blast. Currently he is the Goal Keeper Coach for the Baltimore Blast. Karim will be training the team twice a week and running a weeks mini camp from 8am - 12pm from Aug. 21st - 25th at our Edsall Park field. For this week of camp they will be training with our Rising U17 Div 2 Boys team. Karim will also serve as our Asst Coach for the Fall 2006 season.

COACHING - Kathy Johnson will continue as our Head Coach with Assistance from Karim Moumban with the anticipation of Karim becoming more involved. Kathy has played competitive soccer most of her life including selections to her NJ State Team for 4 yrs and to the Region 1 Team for 3 yrs while in HS. She received a scholarship to George Mason University in 1983. At Mason the team finished 2nd in the NCAA National Championships in 1983, they went to final eight in 1984 and won the National Championship in 1985. Kathy was also a National Champion in the Amateur under 21 twice, under 30’s three times and once as an over 30. She has coached this team since inception as well as our Div 2 Rising U17 Boys.

Welcome Message CONTINUED FROM FRONT PAGE
Our team started when we were 7 years old playing in a House League and in the Team America Skills Development Program. We first started playing Travel Soccer as two teams with the players divided equally between the two teams. At the begining of U11 we started in Div. 4 of NCSL and have steadily progressed to reaching one of our team goals of making it to Div 1 at our own pace. Working hard, getting the experiences, playing lots of games and staying focused. It has taken years of dedication, training, and sacrifice. Along with all of this we have always managed to have a lot of fun.

We train 2-3 times per week, play year round including indoor and futsal, participate in approximately 8-10 tournaments per year including US Club Soccer and SuperClub National events. Our club house is located inside the Fairfax Sportsplex and is the center point of all our teams. We are a Soccer only Club, dedicated to our players and their needs.

We focus is on possession play and individual skills. Our players are trained to handle the ball, see the entire field, and support each play on and off the ball. We concentrate on skills and ball movement utilizing the entire field and team. We have one of the best Trainers in the nation, Clyde Watson who holds National and International Coaching Licenses and Recognition.

3 PLAYERS SELECTED TO VIRGINIA STATE TEAM POOLS
Congratulations to all of our players who have been training and trying out to make their age group's Viriginia State Team. We had three players named to their respective Age Group Pools: Neil and Zach to the 92's and Colby to the 93's.

Again, we are proud of all the boys and their representation of our team throughout this process.

The next step is for these boys to continue to train with hopes of being selected to the Regional team next summer.

FIVE PLAYERS SELECTED TO ODP NORTHERN DISTRICT POOLS
This past weekend the VYSA ODP (Olympic Development Program) held tryouts for the Northern District Boys Teams at Loundon's NOVA Campus. The heat was intense and competition tough. After three 2+ hour sessions, five of our players were selected to their Age Group Pools. Our players represent 3 Age Groups: Harley to the 91's, Neil, Zack, and Cedric to the 92's and Colby to the 93's. This is the first selection and most likely each pool will be trimmed further, so our boys have to work even harder to make it to their District Teams and then try to be selected to the State Team Pool.

I'm proud of all our players that tried out this past weekend, regardless of which boys advanced, all of you represented your Team, your Club, your Coaches, your Parents, and Yourselves wonderfully.

GOOD JOB AND GOOD LUCK BOYS!!!

Team America '91 - CHAMPIONS at KIRKWWOD BOYS PREMIER TOURNAMENT
Wow - what a weekend. We went to the Kirkwood Premier Tournament a bit short handed with a total of 12 players for Saturday and only 11 for Sunday. Three of our players were Guests: JC, Dominique and Carly. Yes, two Girls!!
Our first game was against a very tough Jersey Knight team. The game was very even and played to a 0-0 score until the last five minutes and they put 2 Goals in and it ended with a 0-2 finish. The game was bit disapointing, but the team dusted themselves off and went back out that afternoon, playing much better against the Great Hartford Revolution, winning the game 4-1. After a night of relaxing and fun, the team came out fired up against the Upper Bucks County Celtics. With many opportunities and dominating the game without finishing, the game ended in a 0-0 tie, which advanced us the Finals against the Jersey Knights.
Each game the team seemed to come out stronger. Our possesion game was intact and we moved the ball fluently, dominating the game. Again we had many opportunities but couldn't seem to put the ball in the net. Regardless we continued to play with composer and focus and it paid off with a beautiful goal by Jose before half time. The second half, we again dominated but were called for a foul in our box and they were awarded a Penalty Kick with about 7 minutes remaining in the game. This was a tough one, Blake was so close to a spectacular save, but the ball was very well placed. Regulation ended the game as 1-1. We then went into one Ten Minute Sudden Death overtime. Did I mention we only had 12 players on Saturday and 11 on Sunday? We continued with same control and ball movement that helped us dominate the game. We had a great late opportunity to finish the game, but their keeper made a great save.... So on to PK's.
We shot first, Colby scored a nice goal. Blake saved their first attempt and we were as solid as we could be from there: Neil scored, they scored, Jose scored, they scored, Nicho scored, they scored so it was down to our last shooter, Mr Composure himself, Harely - Penalty Kick #5 - G O A L !!!!!!!!
This weekend proved a lot to us a team!!! Every player stepped up to the plate and played great! Blake, "MY BALL", Weiss had a solid weekend, owning the Six and commanding out of the back. Sean, "give me that thing", Cantarella was a pillar of Defense on Saturday!! Chris, "Mr Composure", Harley was as awesome as ever utilizing his skills to hold that ball and get us out of trouble while managing to twist the other players into pretzels. David, "DA FENCE", Garcia had his best weekend. Playing tough defense and staying calm, waiting for his opportunities to steal the ball. Jamaal, "AIR" Hines got to every ball that even thought of coming near his player - not to mention how many times he penetrating to send off great serves. JC, "the ROCK", was our wall in the middle of field. What a challenge to come out and play with a team for the first time after two practices! JC answered the call!! Jose, "I'm not done with this ball yet" Rodriquez was an inspiration to the entire team, never giving up, always working hard and scoring the key goal in the Championship Game. Colby, "watch that number 9" Johnson and Nicho "stop right there" Valencia were the Dynamic Duo in the middle of the field. If you dared get past one, you had to quickly deal with other. Their ability to transition our team from defense to offense with patience was a huge key! Colby was everywhere and Nicho was pounding shots from the outside. Then there was Carly, "that girl is punishing those boys, Utterback!!! What a solid performance all weekend long and a great full volley goal in Saturday's game. Neil, "heeeessssssss back", Seng was the play making machine of the weekend. Neil set up so many players this weekend, he has a new request line at home!!! Dominique "now you have to pull my shirt?" Johnson was a force that had to be dealt with up top, again with great instructions for Neil, Dominique was setting up plays and creating Chaos in their back field.
CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL PLAYERS WE ARE ALL PROUD OF YOU!!!!

US Club Regional
We faced great competition at the US Club Soccer Regional Championships this past weekend. Our first game was very even but we fell short with a 0-1 loss. Our second game was a bit more intense and exciting. After being down by 2 at half time against a very aggressive Rochester Rhino (Super Y Team), we came back strong in the second half.   Without our Goal Keeper and after making some positional changes, we were determined to stay focused and true to our game. Our first goal was scored off a free kick from Cedric, making the score 1-2. Later in the Game, Carly set-up a beautifully finished header by John to even the score at 2 all. We were pumped and they were fighting hard as well, but in stopage time, the Rhinos finished off a free kick and the game ended 3-2. Although this was disappointing, we were proud to get ourselves back into the competition. The last game was against the Jersey Knights which ended in a 0-0 tie. Again without our Goal Keeper and playing short the first half, not a bad finish after some lessons learned.
Overall we finished respectfully, competing well in all games. We never really seemed to get our rhythm but everyone worked hard. We have a lot of work to do moving forward, learning our new players and vise versa but the future looks bright and all players know we are going to do great!!!!

SEMI FINALIST IN POTOMAC TOURNAMENT
Team America got up very early to play against a very tough, Cobb FC 92 Gold from Georgia (Nationally Ranked #2). We started off very slow because it was hard to adjust due to the field directions, and equipment. Cobb FC is a very fast team with quick passes, and with very good movement on/off the ball. They got a quick goal. After their goalie made a mistake by coming out to far, Andrez reacted well and touched over their keeper. NICE FINISH. We had a great opportunity to tie the game at 2 each late in the second half, but just did not capitalize on it. Soon after they were awarded a PK and the final score was The final score was 1-3. We did well against a great team - good training for us!!!!

Our second and third games were against a solid team from NY and the Delaware State Cup finalist. With those two wins we were headed for the semi-finals to face Reston FC. Reston is another strong team with solid players and probably the strongest striker in the State. He is a handful and finishes well. He was involved in their first 3 quick goals against us. We played as if we were very intimidated by them the first half. We were down 4-0 at half and talked about being competitors and never giving up, focussing on our style of play and trying to win the second half. The game ended 1-4 and we did compete in the second half very well. Again great training for us to build on and lessons to learn from.

TEAM AMERICA ADVANCES TO NATIONALS
Team America was going to play in the SUPERCLUBS REGIONAL TOURNAMENT but they cancelled it because they're weren't enough teams. Due to this, they automatically advance to NATIONALS at the Dulles Sportsplex. Schedules should come out soon.

TEAM AMERICA WINS INDOOR SESSION 1 U-14
Team America played up a year in indoor this season. The competition at the Dulles Sportsplex was pretty good. We played teams like Reston Rapid Fire, Arlington Action, United Red, and SWYA Phoneix. Our toughest challenge was against Reston Rapidfire. They were very aggressive, but not that skilled. We easily outplayed them with our skills. We were first with winning 7 games, no ties, no losses, and scored 65 goals, and allowing 29 goals go in.
