Sat 10/18/08 TBA State Finals Day 2.... The Lions accomplished one of the most difficult feats in High School Sports when they successfully defended their IHSA State Championship on Saturday October 18th. Their score of 292 matched the previous school record and together with their 291 from Friday, gave them a 583 total and whopping 15 stroke victory and back-to-back 3A State Championships. The day started quickly as Joe Ferrari went out early and birdied his first 2 holes, helping add to the Lions lead, increasing it to 8 strokes before Hinsdal Central went on a run. In the matter of about 30 minutes, Hinsdale was on the top of the leaderboard with a 2 stroke lead. Lions ace Dan Stringfellow hit some trouble when he recorded a quadruple bogey on the 6th hole, but as Danny often does, responded immediately with a par and consecutive birdies on 8 and 9. Right behind him, Joe Carlson recorded birdies on 7 and 9, and the Lions Roll began as the lead stretched to 6 strokes at about the time Brad Klune birdied his last hole and recorded a solid 74 on a course setup much tougher than Friday. Senior Matt Vitale officially finished his High School career when he birdied the 16th hole, then parred 17 and 18, making a nice 8 foot par putt in front of a quickly growing crowd. His 77 stretched the Lions lead to 9 strokes and Lion fans everywhere began to feel confident as Dan Stringfellow and Joe Carlson were both in control of their games back on the final holes. Danny handled the back 9 with 7 pars and 2 birdies and his 73 represented a great comeback from a quadruple bogey. His 2 day total of 143 was good for 5th place. Meanwhile, Joe Carlson birdied 14,15, and 17 to take the overall lead, and when Parker Freiburg narrowly missed birdie on 18, Joe lagged his birdie putt to 12 inches and tapped in for a 68 and 2 day total of 137, giving him the individual medalist honors and sealing the 15 stroke win for the Lions. Individually, the Lions Joe Carlson finished 1st, Dan Stringfellow 5th, Brad Klune 23rd, and Matt Vitale 25th out of 104 total players. Ken Wienkowski finished a respectable 46th in his first State Finals Appearance, and Joe Ferrari gained valuable experience and put together a good final round of 80. The Lions 2nd consecutive IHSA 3A State Championship also set a team record of 583, besting the previous record of 587 held by host school Normal U-High set just a few years ago.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE LIONS ON THEIR 2008 IHSA 3A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP ! ! ! Lions repeat State Championship
Fri 10/17/08 TBA State Finals Day 1.... The Lions picked the PERFECT time to shoot the ALL TIME school record score of 291, beating by 1 stroke their previous best of 292 shot twice in the past couple of years. Joe Carlson led the way with a 69, only 2 strokes off the lead. Danny Stringfellow hit it pure and solid tee to green, but the rolling rock did not find the hole often. Still, Dan recorded a 2 under par 70 to help the Lions maintain their roll. Matt Vitale was off to a slow start before gaining some momentum with birdies on 9 and 14. Then at the 15th, he drove the green on the par 4, nearly carding an ace as the ball rolled right over the hole. Matt made the putt and carded a nice round of 75, adding to the Lions lead. Brad Klune had some troubles on the back nine but still held on for a 77, matched by Kenny Wienckowski and the Lions recorded their 291 and held a 5 stroke lead over Edwardsville and a 7 stroke lead over Hinsdale Central. The Lions held the overnight lead for the 2nd straight year, and it seemed to be a 3 horse race as Quincy was 8 strokes back as well. School record 291 and 5 stroke lead!
Mon 10/13/08 TBA 2008 Sectional Champions Hersey came on strong early, the wind kicked up late, and the Lions held on for their 3rd straight sectional championship Monday afternoon at Glenview Park Golf Course. The team got started on a roll when Joe Ferrari carded a 76 despite an OB on his back 9. Matt Vitale was the next one in and carded an even par 70, which ended up 3rd place overall. In the meantime, Hersey put up a 68 and a 72 to get everyone's attention. New Trier was also very much alive as they had all 6 scores alive after 9 holes of play. Next in came Brad Klune who put up a 74 to put the Lions on the map as one of the contenders. Hersey dropped out of the running with a couple scores in the 80's, and then Joe Carlson stuffed his approach shot to 3 feet on the last hole for a birdie and 73. The rumor was that Danny had it to 3 under and the team started to feel very confident that a trip to Bloomington was in order. Danny sealed the deal with his 69 and 2nd place overall despite a couple of wayward drives coming in. New Trier put up some solid scores coming in, but it was not enough as the Lions 286 was good enough for a 4 stroke win.
NEXT UP: On to BLOOMINGTON and The Den !

Go Lions 286 Wins by 4
Tue 10/7/08 TBA 2008 Regional Champions Danny Stringfellow led the way to an impressive winning score of 294 and 20 stroke win at the Fremd Regional on Tuesday. His 68 produced his second consecutive Regional win which helped lead the team to the next round. Joe Carlson was right on his heels before a tough 15th hole turned a great round into a very good round of 73. Brad Klune posted a fine 75 which was good for 4th place, and Kenny Wienchowski put together a very solid round of 78 to round out the team scoring. The scene shifts to Glenview Park Golf Course for Sectionals on Monday with your Lions matching up against New Trier, Fremd, Hersey and Prospect as the strong teams.
Go Lions ! 294 beats Fremd & Hersey
Sat 9/20/08 TBA Lions 1st of 26 at Wheeling The Lions defended their 2007 Wheeling Wildcat win successfully by 8 strokes over Barrington High School. Matt Vitale and Brad Klune tied with Barrington senior Ross Frankenberg for medalist honors with 1 under scores of 71, while Dan Stringfellow came in with EVEN par 72 and Joe Carlson added a 79 for a team total 293. The field was deep with 26 teams and 130 players, and the weather could not have been any better. The Lions have played this course (Traditions of Chevy Chase) in tournaments 5 times in the past 24 months and won 4 of them. The course was setup perfectly for an enjoyable day for all as the Lions ended their regular season tournament schedule in style with the 8 stroke win. Next up are a few more dual matches in the next 10 days before the Conference Tournament on October 3rd.
GO LIONS ! ! ! Win by 8 strokes with 293 !
