2007 Team Win2
Team receives IHSA trophy

               LIONS BEGIN ANOTHER SEASON

This year's varsity team is anchored by veteran captains Matt Vitale(Sr), Danny Stringfellow(Jr), Brad Klune (Jr), and Joe Carlson(Jr).  Last year in the IHSA State Finals, Danny finished in 8th place, Matt and Joe tied for 12th and Brad 20th.  Brad and Danny tied for 5th in the State Finals in 2006 as freshmen.

After the final round of the 2007 IHSA State Finals last year, runner-up Quincy coach said, "You guys beat a great team today but we just couldn't compete with your depth.  Nobody can match your depth".

Matt Vitale led the Lions with great performances in the 2006 Regionals (74) and Sectionals (71).  He  has won (10) local junior events in past Summers.  His matching rounds of 76 at last year's State Finals were a great mark of consistency. This past Summer he advanced to the quarterfinals in the Chick Evans Memorial Tournament beating the tournament medalist in the opening round.

Brad Klune holds the school's low scoring record (67) and finished in the top 5 in five out of six invitationals in 2007.  He was outstanding this past Summer on the AJGA Tour earning Fully Exempt status in future tournaments for the duration of his high school career.  On day 2 of the IHSA Finals in 2007, Brad went out early and posted a great round of 75 that started the team on a roll to their State Championship.

Danny Stringfellow shot 31 (-5) for nine holes last year, and another 31(-6) this season setting school records.   He is the reigning Illinois State Junior Amateur champion having beat the top juniors in the state this past Summer at Makray Memorial Golf Course.    He is a veteran with many other junior victories including wins at Whistling Straights (FCWT), Medinah Shriners Invitational(IJGA) and Golf Channel's National Drive, Pitch and Putt.  In 2007, Danny won the Viator Invite(67), Wheeling Wildcat Invite(72), and prestigious Zee-Bee Invite(73).  He also captured the 2007 Regional Championship(72) at Buffalo Grove, and was 2nd in the 2007 Sectionals at Old Orchard.

Joe Carlson is now the reigning IJGA Player of the Year based on his strong 2008 Summer campaign.  This Summer he finished in 2nd at the Illinois State Junior Amateur right behind Danny and capped his Summer with a win in the season ending Tournament of Champions by shooting 68-69.  In 2007 he was a finalist in the prestigious Chick Evans Championship which began with over 400 golfers at the start.   He captured the 2007 Sectional Championship with a high school career best of 70 at Old Orchard Country Club.  This represented the first time in the school's history that a Lion golfer won a Sectional Medalist title.

Junior Joe Ferrari is starting on the varsity after he led last year's frosh soph team throughout the year.  Joe capped his 2007 MVP season with a 76 in the Viator Invitational placing him 3rd in a field of over 100 players.

Sophomore Kenny Wienckowski is the surprise of 2008.  Last season on the Frosh/Soph he had mild success but has emerged as a varsity mainstay after a Winter of hard work began to pay off on the IJGA tour this past Summer.  He shot four consecutive rounds in the 70's with a low round of 74 and has not looked back since.  This Fall has started quickly for him as well with rounds of 78 and 75 in his first two varsity tournaments earning medals in both.

Also competing at the varsity level are Chad Holsworth, Pat Schuetz, Brian Keefe, Nick Trapani, Lucas Underys, Mario Cuttone and Dom Zanfardino.

By winning the 2007 State Championship, the Lions culminated their season with 10 consecutive tournament wins.  The only time this was accomplished previously was in 1991 by St Charles High School under coach Rob Prentiss.  The Lions two day score of 600 was the third lowest in IHSA Tournament history.   Leading up to the State Tournament Series, the Lions won 6 consecutive Tournaments, including Rockford Boylan, Viator, Inverness, Zee Bee, Biltmore and Wildcat Invitationals.   They then made it nine (9) in a row by capturing the ESCC at Traditions of Chevy Chase, Regionals at Buffalo Grove, and Sectionals at Old Orchard.  These championships were their 4th straight Conference, 3rd consecutive Regional, and 2nd consecutive Sectional championships.

The team accomplishments in the Fall of 2007 were highlighted all season by team depth where all players contributed at different times.   They capped their season with a State Championship which was largely due to their consistent play where they took only 3 double bogeys and 1 triple bogey in 144 holes of golf.

The 2006 team finished 2nd in the the IHSA State Finals 4 strokes away from a State Title. Their score of 614 would have won 6 of the last 10 IHSA State Finals. This culminated a dream season where the Lions won Conference, Regional (297) and Sectional (292) titles.  Their 2nd place finish was also keyed by consistency where they kept mistakes to a minimum by taking 4 double bogeys and 1 triple bogey.

Prior to 2006, the best team finish was the 3rd Place '83 team led by now PGA Club Professional Scott Beaugureau who finished 8th individually in the IHSA State Finals that same year. This team was recently enshrined in the school's Hall of Fame.  The '74 team that was part of the school record of 59 consecutive match play wins was also placed in the Hall of Fame.

The Lions now have won Conference Championships in 1965, '66, '67. '70, '73, '74, '80, '83, '99, 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007.  They have
sent the 1999, 2006, and 2007 teams, and five other individuals to the IHSA Finals in the past eight years.

Recent graduates Taylor Krug (Monmouth), Phil Makowski (Northern Ohio), Jon Novak (Butler), John Perna (Gulf Central), Matt Schuman (Bradley) and Anthony Gillick (Denver), have competed successfully at the NCAA Division I level. Novak won the club championship at Medinah CC and turned professional the next day. Novak and Perna currently compete on the Florida Mini Tour getting ready to try to qualify for the Tour.  In 2007, both made it to the 2nd Stage of Tour School.

The Frosh/Soph team had a wonderful season in 2007.  After winning the 2006 ESCC, they finished 2nd in 2007 with 10 wins and only 1 loss coming at the Conference Tournament.

This year's Frosh/Soph team will be led by Sophomores Joe Ward, Nick Antoniou, Nick VanStedum, Nick Baur, Sean Dowd, Tommy Lopez, Anthony Skinner, Emmanuel Dominguez and Jonathan Goldenne.  Freshmen players include Sam Masini, Tim Orlowski, Frank Travaglio, Jack DeWald, Patrick Marty, Keegan Thornton, Mark Lalowkse and Jeremy O'Donnell.

Second year coach John Hardy will lead the young Lions and will be assisted by coach Owen McGovern Jr who played for the Lions in 2001.   Varsity Coach Halpin begins his 15th season guiding the veterans.
