Coach Catron Named Assistant Coach at Hampden Sydney College
Head Coach Billy Catron

Coach Billy Catron recently resigned as Head Coach of the Statesmen to pursue a new job opportunity as an assistant coach at nearby Hampden Sydney College. Catron had served in some capacity at R-H for over 25 years. (3 years at CMS, 5 years as JV coach, 4 years as Varsity assistant and 13 years as Head Coach).

In his time as Head Coach, the Statesmen won 199 games, three Region B championships and 2 Virginia State Group A Championships. He coached in 3 VHSCA Allstar games including games that featured current MLB players Justin Verlander, Ryan Zimmerman and Brian Bocock. During his time at R-H 5 Players from R-H were selected to the Same all star game. (Kevin Hancock, Daniel McCraw, Zach Adams, Tyler Napier and Derek Adams)

More than 20 R-H  players have moved on to play college baseball and two are now high School coaches themselves.  He was selected Va. Group A COY in 2002 and 2005

Catron designed and consulted on construction of the current Baseball dugouts as well as the current location and construction of the batting cage.

He will continue to teach Biology and Anatomy at R-HHS but will assume a role at H-SC in the fall baseball season working with hitters, infield play and player recuitment.

As of November 12, No replacement for Coach Catron has been selected.

District tournament begins on May 20 with #1 vs #4 and #2 vs #3 at home of the top seeds. Central controls the tie breaker for #4 with two wins over Cumberland. District Champion has a guarenteed first round home game in Region B on May 26

Leaders in the other Region B districts are  Shenandoah ---Luray HS, Bull Run----Madison, Dogwood---Appomattox.

Cosby Defeats R-H in Saturday Doubleheader
On Friday May 2, The Varsity Statesmen defeated Bluestone in a home game at R-H. Thomas Rogers and Robbie Morris combined to hold Bluestone to 4 hits, no earned runs and also strike out 12 Baron batters. Rogers , the starting pitcher, threw 5 innings and Morris pitched two innings in collecting a save.Offensively the Statesmen banged out 9 hits with Joe Rogers collecting 2. Others having hits were Joshua Haskins, Devon Nickerson, Mike Heintzleman, Mike Tatum, Dylan Novitske, Timmy Townsend  and Tyler Hamlett. For the game, Haskins, J. Rogers, Novitske, Heintzleman and Hamlett had one RBI each. On Saturday, the Statesmen hosted AAA Cosby High School of Chesterfield County. The Titans entered the game with a 9-1 record and is the Richmond area’s top team. The Titans made short work of the Statesmen in game one as they collected 12 hit en route to a 12-1 win. For the Statesmen, Mike Tatum and Mike Heintzleman had hits with Heintzleman’s single scoring the only run for R-H.          In Game two, the Statesmen scored three runs in the first inning and led 3-1 through three innings before the Titans scored 8 runs in the inning to open up a lead. The final score was 10-4. The Statesmen had 6 hits in game two with Mike Heintzleman, Thomas Rogers, Josh Overstreet, Timmy Townsend, Robbie Morris and DJ Whitehead having a hit each.With three important JRD contests this week, the Statesmen could potentially gain first place in the district. The team plays at Buckingham Tuesday, host Central on Thursday and travel to Goochland on Friday. The team is currently in second place in the JRD behind Goochland.The Junior Varsity Team defeated Bluestone on Friday by the score of 17-7. The junior Statesmen scored 11 runs in the first inning and coasted to an easy win. They play at Home Tuesday and Friday and travel to Central on Thursday in JRD action.
