Raquel and the First Lady of Peru
Wednesday, May 23
Raquel had a Visit with the First Lady of Peru

The First Lady of Peru, Mrs. Pilar de Garcia came to Seattle on Sunday morning to meet with the Heads of the Peruvian Community here in Seattle. She also meet with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

We got together at the Peruvian Consulate. She came to present her program that is called “Sembrando” This program is to help the less fortune people in Peru. She is helping the people on the Highlands (Sierra) from 2,500 meters and up, people that generally don’t have electricity, drinking water, restrooms. These people probably cook and sleep in the same little room, they don’t have very much and they don’t know what is happening outside of their world. 4 out of 5 of the Children at this altitude are under nutrition.

She explained to us her Program. She said that “My program is all about this”:

First, we will educate the mothers, because the mother is the one who taka cares the family. We will educate the mother about proper hygiene.  How important and necessary it is to boil the water before drinking it and to clean their hands before they eat.  We will teach them to read and write.

Secondly, they will teach them to build a kitchen so they don’t have to breathe the smoke from the wood stove. Many of them have pulmonary problems because of the smoke. Also we will build bathrooms, however the most important part is that they are going to take all parasites out from their tummies, and to finish all the gastro intestinal infection that they are having and cause numerous health problems and deaths among them.

That is the beginning of the project, and of course that they are going to need clothes, food and money

I really love this program I think is great!

Mrs. Pilar program is not part of the Peruvian Government, she has her own Foundation and she is working very hard for it.

I hope that we can help this wonderful program.

Please contact me if you have any questions.

Raquel

Olivia's Experienced at the High Performance Clinic
The High Performance Clinic at the Olympic Training Center has got to be the most valuable clinic a coach can ever attend! Why? Well let me tell you. Number one- Just being at the Olympic Training Center for me was so inspiring! Being able to see where the USA teams train and practice really made the dream more tanagible for anyone who really wants to work to get there. It also instilled a very direct focus in me as a learner of styles, concepts and theories of the game which I continue to be enlightened to. Being surrounded by such a high calliber level of athletes  you begin to respect that focus and dedication much more!

It helps also that the sessions were taught by World All Stars like Lang Ping- USA Womens Team Coach, Hugh McCutcheon- USA Mens Coach, John Cook-Head Coach of Nebraska and many more Olympian Players/ Coaches. They gave their sessions with such precision and passion! They taught about what we need to know about the sport now at the Olympic Level so that we can adequately begin to prepare our youth and even college girls for the game our sport is still becoming. Though a lot of it was fundemental, it reminded us of how important the fundamental skills are! Like Rolling!!!

On top of that, it was my priveledge to be with Raquel and Mark who know the other Olympians by playing with them or against them!! So we had lunch with Lang Ping and took pitures with Hugh and John! It was so awesome- all I kept saying is- Raquel, this is better than Disney World!

The last thing I guess is that one other favorite parts was getting to know other coaches from the US like my roomies form Cali and Texas and the guys from Hawaiian Style in Hawaii- we learned from each other, encouraged each other and who doesn't want a contact in Hawaii?? Duh!!

But Seriously it was much more than a clinic that we got to attend- it was a dream, an inspiration and a wealth of knowledge and spirit that can never be taken back!! So watch out SpaceNeedle- Here we come!!

Carmen and Barbara
Thank You Carmen and Barbara

Carmen and Barbara Thank You very much for helping us with our teams. We really enjoyed to have you with us. We are very glad that you came to help us.
We hope to see you soon.

Cristina Payne named NAIA Volleyball All-Americans
CCristina Payne named NAIA Volleyball All-Americans
Wednesday, December 6, 2006
By Michael MacEachern
Sports Information Director

OLATHE, Kan. – Savannah College of Art and Design’s Frida Sigurdardottir and Cristina Payne were both named to the 2006 NAIA Volleyball All-America team. Sigurdardottir was a second-team selection while Payne was tabbed to the third team.

Sigurdardottir, a 6-foot-0 senior middle hitter from Reykjavik, Iceland, and Payne, a 5-11 outside hitter/middle blocker from Seattle, Wash., helped the Bees to a 26-13 overall record, to a No. 21 national ranking, to their third consecutive Florida Sun Conference and NAIA Region XIV Tournament titles and to their third consecutive trip to the NAIA National Championship.

“Frida and Cristina have both had outstanding years and are definitely two of the NAIA’s premier players,” said three-time NAIA Region XIV Coach of the Year Glenn Cox. “I am proud of both of them for the honors they have earned.”

Payne, who was named to the all-conference and all-region teams for the third consecutive season, led the Bees with 424 kills (3.53 kpg), 339digs (2.83 dpg) and 74 service aces. Her 0.62 service aces per game average is ranked 17th best in the NAIA. Payne, who set the college’s five-game kill record with 34 earlier this season against Biola University, holds the college’s all-time marks in kills (1,302) and service aces (252).

Sigurdardottir and Payne are the college’s first volleyball players named to an All-America team since the Bees rejoined the NAIA in 2003.
