2008 YBL Champions - East Boston Bluefish
bluefish
The East Boston Bluefish defeated the Brighton Brewers 4 games to 1 to win thier first Yawkey Baseball League Championship.  The team finished the season as the #4 seed and en route to winning the title, they beat the 9 time defending champs Somerville Alibrandis( 2-1 ), then upset the top seeded Malden Bulldogs( 3-1 ) as well as upsetting the #2 seed Brewers.  It was a playoff run that may be unmatched in YBL history, topped off by the fact they are the first “wild card” teams to win in at least 15 seasons.  All the members of the Somerville Alibrandis Baseball Club pass along their congratulations to all of the players/staff/supporters on a great and very historic and memorable season for the Bluefish.

Alibranids Players to play in Old Time Baseball Game
old time uni
Somerville Alibrandis outfielder Billy Fitzgerald has again been selected to play in the Old Time Baseball Game August 21st, 2006 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Peter's Field in Cambridge a game that will benefit the The Todd J. Schwartz Memorial Fund. This is the thrid time that Bill has been invited to play. For the secoond season in a row team President David Treska will be one of the umpires working the game. Other Alibrandis players who have participated include Marc DesRoches, Sal Mendonca and Jon Morse.
The game was started in 1994 by Boston Hearld and WEEI's Steve Buckley as a response to the baseball player's strike. It is now a "celebration of baseball" played by some of Greater Boston's most talented high school and collegiate athletes, with all proceeds from the event donated to a local charity. The young talented players wear vintage uniforms, and attendees enjoy the game on picnic blankets under the stars and the lights of St. Peter's. One of the unique aspects of the event is that every dollar raised by food and program sales, player and team sponsorships, and ads in the program are donated to the The Todd J. Schwartz Memorial Fund.

Commissioner Dan Tarpey ( pictured far left )

League President Dave McKay has informed all the members of the Yawkey Baseball League that long time Comminssioner Dan Tarpey has passed away.  Here is what Dave wrote:

It is with deep regret and sadness that I inform you of the passing of the Father of the Thomas A. Yawkey Baseball League of Boston.
Commissioner Dan Tarpey entered into rest this morning at 1:30AM.
Dan was surrounded by his entire family at his son Dan's Residence in Cohasset, MA. He is at peace now and his suffering is over.
Our good friend did so much to nurture us as sportsman in the Yawkey League over the years. I am so proud to have been a friend of his and know how much he loved all of you and your players.
Complete details about Dan's wake and funeral will be published on the YBL Webpage: www.yawkeybaseball.com
Please pass this information along to your players and friends of the League who knew our buddy Big Dan. We love you Dan and will miss you so much!
Respectfully,
David J. McKay
