The longer we go, the older we get
It's inevitable! Our youngsters aren't bothered like us old folks, they actually like it. But for them a leap is there to take. We will soon be changing to 13 and under with the official start of the 2004 season on August 1, 2003. You'll see our site change to reflect this. Bigger fields, more challenges, more growing up to do. There are several teams and organzations in our area that are doing some great things in the area of sports development for the youth of north Alabama. We have had the priviledge of meeting several of their dedicated leaders. We are looking for the best opportunities to offer support to worthy teams in northeast Alabama who share our goals of offering the advancement of young boys in our target age groups' skills and character.
Scottsboro Dixie Youth Major All-star Teams
The Scottsboro Dixie Youth Major ( 11-12 ) National and American All-star teams are set for action.
National League Squad: Brandon Camp, Tyler English, Eric Wade, T.J. Wooten, Robert Henshaw, Holden Beck, Nicholas Hodges, Colton Littles, Blake Russell, Manuel Solis, Jonathon Cloud, Brandon Adkins, Jonathon Qualls
American League Squad: Corey Norris, Colton Hancock, Ryan Rice, Garron Machen, Taylor Machen, Trey Brizendine, Keaton Jones, Chase Cookston, Josh Wilbourn, Chris Tittle, Zach Mardis, Josh Nippers, Zach Jensen
Due to some strange happenings and team shifting by Dixie Youth, this year's sub-district tournament fell to a best 2 of 3 series between the Scottsboro American All-stars and the Scottsboro National All-stars.
The two teams will square off in the best 2 of 3 sub-district series at Veterans Field beginning June 27 for the right to advance to the District Tournament in Rainsville.
11-12 Dixie All-stars Tournament - Game 3
The 3rd and final series game for the Sub-district championship and spot in the District Tourney in Rainsville was a Monday night showdown. The maximum 6 inning pitching rule would play into the Americans hands with there stronger arsenal of experienced pitchers. The National squad's #1 pitcher, Brandon Camp, only had 4 eligible innings left. #2 and 3's Manuel Solis and T.J. Wooten had struggled a bit of late, complicated by Wooten's sore arm in warmups. The Nationals decided to start Solis and try to hold the American squad and get to Camp in the 3rd. The Americans sent a rested Trey Brezindine to the mound.
The visiting Americans jumped all over the Nationals in the first. An opening walk to Zach Mardis was followed by a single by Colton Hancock. Taylor Machen reached on an error, Chris Tittle shot a single through the infield and Josh Wilborn delivered a double down the 3rd baseline. Solis gave way to Brandon Adkins who recorded 3 outs with 2 K's and a single to Ryan Rice to do a good job of damage control, but the Americans were hot and had a 4 run first.
Brezindine pitched a 2 strikeout, no hit first to lead after 1 by 4-0.
The American bats showed no let up in the second, scoring 3 runs on singles by Zach Jenson, Josh Nippers, Mardis and Hancock. With a walk, 2 strikeouts and a groundout, the Nationals were finally out of the inning down 7.
The Nationals faired no better against Brezindine in the 2nd, getting only a single off the bat of Blake Russell.
Brandon Camp came on to pitch for the Nationals, but faced a 7 run hole. Camp worked a 3 up & 3 down 3rd, with one strikeout.
The Nationals scored their first run on Brezindine in the bottom of the 3rd. A leadoff walk to Holden Beck, a single by Eric Wade and some good baserunning got the Nationals a little life, still down 7-1.
Camp continued to look sharp in the top of the 4th, allowing a leadoff walk to Corey Norris followed by a flyout and 2 strikeouts.
The Nationals had what looked like there best chance to rally in the bottom of the 4th when Solis and Camp lead off with solid singles. However Brezindine settled down, retiring the next 2 batters on K's. Robert Henshaw got a single but good American defensive play held the runners without scoring. Brezindine got Russell to ground out with the bases loaded to kill any rally hopes. It remained 7-1 through 4.
Camp began the 5th with 2 strikeouts before giving up his first hit when Mardis delivered a single up the middle. Camp got Hancock to fly out to end the inning.
The Nationals again tried to rally in the bottom half, with a leadoff single by Jonathon Qualls and a walk to Holden Beck. But again Brezindine pitched out of trouble, recording 2 strikeouts and a flyout to slam the door on the National bats again.
Camp struck out the side in order in the 6th, and the National offense had one last shot.
Again the Nationals started well with a leadoff single by Tyler English who stole 2nd. Adkins flew out and English was cut down going to 3rd on a great play by Keeton Jones. With 2 outs, Solis delivered a single to right and Camp followed with a double to LCF. Brezindine recorded the 3rd out when he got Wooten himself with a snag of a liner up the middle.
The National strategy of holding Camp's 4 pitching innings for the last 4 proved the biggest error in the end, as the fired up American squad went anything but quietly through the 1st and 2nd. The National bats couldn't deliver with numerous men on base. The American's depth at pitcher and more timely hitting sends them on. Congratulations to the Scottsboro American All-stars.
WP - Trey Brezindine LP - Manuel Solis
FINAL SCORE: Scottsboro American 7 Scottsboro National 1
The Americans take the sub-district title, 2 games to 1, and advance to the District Tournament in Rainsville next week.
11-12 Dixie All-stars Tournament - Game 2
The Americans came out smoking and jumped on the Nationals Game 2 starter T.J. Wooten. Zach Mardis, Colton Hancock got singles to start and Blake Fielder drew a walk to load the bases with no outs. Chris Tittle hit a double to RCF pushing 2 runs across. Wooten got the next 2 on flyouts but a ground ball off the bat of Ryan Rice was booted at third allowing Fielder to score. Wooten recorded a strikeout to end the rocky first.
American starter Colton Hancock recorded a 3 up & 3 down first with help from a solid defense behind him. American 3, National 0.
The Americans continued to hit in the 2nd, as Taylor Machen & Trey Brezindine lead off with singles. Wooten fought hard and got a groundout and flyout before Chase Cookston delivered a single. Some fine defense held the runners and with 2 outs Wooten got leadoff man Mardis to fly out to end the threat.
Hancock continued his good pitching performance in the second, allowing only a walk. American 3, National 0
Manuel Solis came on in the 3rd for the Nationals, and both he and Hancock held both sides scoreless in the 3rd.
Solis ran into control problems in the 4th, and with 2 runners on and 1 out, gave way to Jonathon Qualls. Qualls worked the Nationals out of a jam recording 2 outs with no runs in. Hancock continued to have the Nationals' number, and gave up only a single to Eric Wade while recording 3 K's.
Qualls caught the wildness bug after recording the first 2 outs in the 5th, allowing a run on 4 walks. Brandon Adkins came on and got the final out on a bases loaded strikeout of Tittle.
The National bats showed their first signs of life against Hancock in the bottom half. Manuel Solis started thing off with a single, and Brandon Camp drove a double to the RCF fence, scoring Solis. However Hancock got consecutive groundouts followed by a strikeout to end any National rally.
Adkins recorded a 3 up & 3 down top of the 6th, with one strikeout.
The Nationals couldn't rally against Hancock and the Americans as he gave up only a single to Robert Henshaw while closing out the complete game victory. Wooten took the loss for the Nationals.
FINAL SCORE: Scottsboro American 4 Scottsboro National 1 Series tied 1 to 1
11-12 Dixie All-stars Tournament - Game 1
Game one was a dominant one for the National All-stars. The Nationals jumped out to an early lead as the first 5 batters reached base on American starter Garron Machen. Tyler English drew a walk, Brandon Adkins followed with a single and Manuel Solis drew a walk to load the bases. Brandon Camp drove a line drive double just inside the right field line scoring two. A passed ball and 2 more walks completed the 4 run first for the Nationals.
The Americans showed they were not going away. National starter Brandon Camp was a rattled by the American batters distraction plan of calling timeout before every pitch just as Camp started his wind-up. The tactic worked for two leadoff walks to Zach Mardis and Colton Hancock before Camp overcame the distraction. After a strikeout of Garron Machen, Chris Tittle executed a suicide squeeze bunt, scoring Mardis. Josh Wilbourn K'd but Blake Fielder punched a bloop double over 3rd base scoring two, then was cut down trying to take third on a throw home. Score after 1 was 4 - 3 National.
Nick Hodges started the National's 2nd with a leadoff single and Eric Wade hit into a fielders choice for the first out. Jonathon Cloud and English drew walks. Keaton Jones came on in relief of American starter G. Machen and struck out Atkins for the second out. Solis drew a walk to load the bases with two outs. Camp stepped up and drilled the first pitch over the centerfield scoreboard for a grand slam homer that broke the game open. Wooten and Russell drew walks and set up Qualls who delivered an RBI single. Littles grounded out to end the 6 run inning for the Nationals.
Camp pitched a 3 up and 3 down 2nd for the nationals, recording 2 strikeouts, to end the 2nd at National 10, American 3.
Jones started off the 3rd with walks to Holden Beck and Robert Henshaw but settled in and got Hodges, Wade and Cloud on strikeouts to end the threat.
Camp gave way to T. J. Wooten on the mound in the bottom of the third. Trey Brizendine drew a leadoff walk, but was later cut down stealing by National catcher Tyler English. Jones also walked and Zach Jensen reached on an error. Wooten battled and K'd Chase Cookston but Mardis followed with an infield single to load the bases. Wooten got Hancock to fly out to right to end the threat.
The Nationals kept the pressure on in the 4th as the American pitchers couldn't seem to find the strike zone. Following walks to English, Atkins and Solis, Corey Norris came on in relief of Jones.
Norris walked Camp, Wooten, Qualls and Beck while striking out Russell, Littles and Henshaw in between. The nationals had scored 4 without a hit and led 14-3.
Wooten pitched a strong 3 up and 3 down 4th inning for the Nationals to end the game on the 10 run lead rule.
Camp was the winning pitcher and had 7 RBI's. G. Machen took the loss.
FINAL SCORE: Scottsboro National 14 Scottsboro American 3 National leads series 1-0
