WEBSITE Transitions over summer - For the next few months this website will continue to host information on both the Scorpions'96 Red/Gold teams AND the new younger U8B Scorpions2001 teams. But the '95/'96 Scorps players are transitioning/moving on to other teams in the Club in the U13B age groupings, with about 23 of the 30 players in the RVFC Adidas One program, and the remaining Scorps on Club-track teams. By August, this website will become solely for use of the NEW Scorpions2001 U8B teams. 3 Teams - 3 MEDALs - 3v3LIVE......... Scorpions2001 (U7B) entered two teams, Scorps Rojos and Scorps Black, and Scorpions'96 Red (U12B) entered one team (Geckos) in the 3v3LIVE tournament in Albuquerque and played on June 14th at Balloon Fiesta Park. All three teams and families hung out together all day, and when the dust settled all three teams ended up with 1st or 2nd place medals. Pretty good way for the little Scorps to start out, taking first and second place in their first tourney together. Even though it was a small field of 5 teams, it was good experience for the 2001 teams. For the U12B Geckos it was a more impressive showing as they played in a mixed U12 thru U14 age group, and came out on top in the 6-team field with two U12B teams, two U13B teams, and two U14B teams. FUN tourney together, but a very long, HOT day for the coaches, players, and families......... Fitness Work "At The Dam" Pays Off for Scorps'96 -- The Scorpions got a bit more serious about fitness training during the Spring season, and it paid off in a number of games. Still much work to do as the boys enter the next season with coach Sibby, but running at John Roberts Dam (between Juan Tabo and Tramway) seemed to help with on the field performance in DCSL games during April and May. Scorpions Red PLUS Enjoys Real Colorado Cup -- The team signed up for an end of season tourney/trip way back in late Winter, but as the Memorial Day tournament approached the team started shrinking. Four players were selected to play on the '95ODP tournament team in the Sandia Cup and also attend regional ODP Camp in Oregon, and three others had conflicts arise that could not be avoided. Not to fear, the Scorps' friends jumped in and allowed the team to stay competitive and have a good showing in the U12B Gold bracket at this Denver tournament. Thanks to our SIX guests - Broulio, Brian, Jorge, Evan, Julian, and Erik for filling in. The team did well winning two games, tying one, and losing one all to top-level Colorado teams. We also all stayed at the same hotel with our RVFC partners (the REDS), and the boys had a great trip, a fun time seeing the CO Rapids vs Chivas MLS game, and a solid showing in the tourney. The RIO family was well-represented in Denver!! NEW Scorpions2001 (U8B) Teams "almost" formed - The new U8B teams (players with birthdates from 8/1/00 through 7/31/2001) is taking shape, and will begin competition as a team this summer in various 3v3 tournaments. The team(s) still have 1-3 openings to fill and will consider playing UP a year a year (at U9B) if a few more "strong" players and "soccer families" join us. Call coach Jeff (400-8920) if interested in the team, or to find out more about tryouts, future plans, etc. SCORPS'96 GOLD Successful in Spring Tourneys - In our last season together before the RVFC Adidas One (A-1) reformation of teams in the age group, the Scorps'96 Gold team proved very competitive in all Spring activities. Highlights included scoring 24 goals and bringing home Gold Medals and a Team trophy in the Kohl's American Cup U12B Gold bracket, and placing 2nd and earning Silver medals in the Border Cup also in the U12B Gold bracket. In addition to medals in the two tournaments, the Spring '08 DCSL season proved very competitive with 4 of 5 Premier bracket games being ties or 1-goal games (with Mustangs, Rage, and Los Alamos), and a fun, upset win over the 2nd-ranked Teradactyls Black. It will be tough seeing this team split up, and re-mixed with the Mustangs, but it will also be another step in the player's development. Great job this Spring GOLD - good luck in the future within RIO. All the boys are in good positions as "premier-level players". Stay in touch, OK??? FOUR Scorpions'96 Players Invited to ODP'95 Tournament Team and Regional Camp - Congrats go out to DevinE, NathanC, and StephanoP and DominicP for their selections and invitations to be part of the '95ODP tourney team this Spring and Summer. The four Scorps will play in the Sandia Cup tournament with the rest of the '95ODP team, will train together for a few weeks, and then attend the ODP'95 Regional camp and represent New Mexico. Although it leaves the Scorps'96 Red team a bit shorthanded for the Real Colorado Cup in Denver, it is really a great opportunity for our players' development, and supports the states' ODP program. The team has filled in for the Denver trip with several strong guest players, so hopefully a win-win for everyone. Work hard boys, and gain all you possibly can from the experience and exposure to other ODP players from the West!!!! Represent!!!! RED Team Becomes RVFC Adidas One Team - Staying almost completely intact, the Scorpions'96 Red Team will transition into their U13B year as one of the Club's Adidas One teams and will now be coached full-time by one of our pro coaches, Sibby Browne. Sibby has helped with the team's development,as our staff coach for the past few years, and has run one session each week. As an A-1 Team, Sibby will now run all of the practices and be the game-day coach for all/most tourneys, games, scrimmages, etc. Although we have been transitioning throughout the Spring, it is a bit tough for Coach Jeff to turn over HIS team, and start over with the younger guys............ it's the "known versus the unknown". But Scorps Red will be in good hands with Sibby and it's always good for the players to hear a different voice after four years with Jeff cracking the whip, pushing the players, being the disciplinarian, etc. Jeff will continue to help with off-season training, and will follow the player's development over the next several years, and hope that some of the players will assist as "mentors" for the newest batch of Scorpions2001 guys. If openings occur on the A-1 Scorps team, call Sibby Browne (350-4087) for further information...... "Scorpions'96 Enjoy Competition at Regional Tournament - Over the President's Day weekend, the Scorps Red participated with a strong field of SIXTEEN U12B Premier teams from around the country. The first game was against Sparta (UT), ranked 8th in the region, and the Scorps were able to deal with their two outstanding strikers and emerge with a hard-fought 0-0 TIE. The second game versus a physical Celtic Green from OK, was a case of missed opportunities for the Scorps as the team controlled much of the game, but our finishing was a bit off-target and resulted in a close 1-2 loss. After the disappointing loss, the team came out flat in the third game versus the eventual tourney winners (AZ Blackhawks) and fell behind early before coming back to dominate the second half. It was good to know we could run with a team of this caliber, and also pointed out the need to be focused every minute of the tourney. Facing a Chicago team (Trevian Blue) in the final game again saw another tight game, and the 11th TIE (of 33 total games in U12BG) of the tournament, proving just how tough all of the defenses were. All-in-all, a fun weekend in Phoenix, and the realization that our Red team is competitive not only in NM, but also regionally." "Scorps Red Take FIRST at NM Rush Spring Cup - After a long winter off, and missing guys to b-ball and ODP'95, the Scorps threw together a team, and entered the Rush Cup to get some games in before the trip to Phoenix for the Prseident's Day tourney. Both the Red team and Gold team showed the rust, but also had enough good attacks to end up winning 6 games and losing only one? The Gold team lost a close game (0-1) in the semi-finals to Necaxa from El Paso. The Red team, with three guests from the Reds, did not allow a goal in four games and ended up winning the U13BS bracket. At times the passing, spacing, and possession was very good ................ at other times, the team looked pretty unorganized. A typical pre-season performance, but good to get back into it...." " Scorps Gold ADD TWO Players - During the off-season, two players officially transferred onto the Scorps Gold roster, and have begun their time as part of the Scorpions'96 companion teams. We welcome ZacP and SeanD to the team for the Spring season, and look forward to working them into the rotation. As for all the players and families, we will do our best to provide oppportunities for their development, and to help prepare them for whatever lies ahead in their soccer futures. Also symbolic of being a member of the Scorpions, both Sean and Zac were awarded a silver SCORPION keyring and join all previous Scorpions'96 and Scorpions'91 players of the past 8 years." " U7-8 Sunday Scrimmages -- On Sunday, Feb 23rd, approximately 20 players in the U7/8 age group showed up for a FUN "Play Day" and series of scrimmages at Aztec Park. The boys had fun, met new friends, and had a chance to get in some extra touches before the league seasons all start. It went over so well, that similar sessions will be run on Sundays in March and April at Academy Hills Park from 4:00 to 5:30pm on 3/2, 3/9, 3/16, 3/23 maybe?, 3/30, 4/13, 4/20, and 4/27, (weather permitting). For anyone interested in future opportunities, call coach Jeff on his cell phone (400-8920). "SIXTEEN SCORPS MAKE ODP & YOP -- After participating in "playing opportunities" (tryouts) in September, through recommendations by the coaches, and evaluations by various NMYSA staff coaches during the Fall season, 16 Scorpions (Red/Gold) players were invited to be part of the ODP and YOP training pools. In the '95 birth year, NINE Scorps players were sent letters to participate in the Olympic Development Program (ODP'95) traing pool and included AchyutW, BrandtK, DevinE, DominicP, JasonT, JustinN, NathanC, RyanS, and StephanoP. Five of the players were also in the Young Olympians Program (YOP) last year, so this is their second year in the program. For the YOP'96 (guys with 1996 birth years), SEVEN Scorps players including ErnyG, GregJ, HunterQ, KevinS, MarshallM, StephenC, and SebastianV were asked to join the training program. Congrats to ALL the Scorpion players who tried out and put themselves "on the line" versus the top players in the state within their respective age groups......... the additional work, experience, and a variety of coaching sessions will contribute to their soccer development." "NEXT" Scorpions Team Forming During Spring -- With plans to start competing in the U7/8 age group (birthdates from 8/1/2000 thru 7/31/2001) over the summer, Scorpions2001, will be looking for committed soccer families to form the core of the next great Scorpions team(s). The search will start with "playing opportunities" during the winter and spring, and will be followed by Rio Vista tryouts in June. As the core team begins to take shape, we will begin play with small-sided (3v3) tourneys in CY2008. Scorps2001 will follow in the footsteps of the outstanding Scorpions'96 (Red and Gold) teams, and the Scorpions'91 team, each of which have been geared to the most committed soccer players and families. All of coach Jeff's teams have become premier-level teams and have been in the top tiers locally, within the state, and regionally. Each team has been better than the last, and they have all been very good. For further information regarding Scorps2001, please contact Coach Jeff Saari (400-8920c, jsaari@fs.fed.us).
WAY TO GO COACH JEFF!!!!! Our COACH -- Jeffrey Saari -- was named the 2007 New Mexico Boys COACH OF THE YEAR at the annual general meeting of the New Mexico Youth Soccer Association on Saturday, 6/9/07. This is an outstanding honor for our coach, our Scorpions teams, and for Rio Vista FC. We congratulate Jeff on this well-deserved recognition and support him as New Mexico's nominee for Regional (and hopefully, National) Coach of the Year. Of special note were the letters of support from many of Jeff's current and former players/families, and the Addidas Champions League Finale match ball that was awarded to Jeff at the awards luncheon at Santiago's at the Tram.
Roster Spots Open for Top-Level Competitive Players. "Ex-Scorps Excel in High School" -- Many of the former Scorpions '91 players who played for coach Jeff, during their U10B-thru U13B years, are now excelling at their respective high schools. As a youth coach, it is extremely rewarding to see "your guys" as they continue on with their development in the sport, as they become young men, and do well at the high school and club level. Lawrence Robledo (La Cueva), Jacob Thordahl (Academy), Ryan Blair (St. Pius, captain), Nathan Widner (Sandia), Reece Melendez (Cibola), Tristan Perry (Hope), Evan Boulanger, Evan Thompson, Aiden Grummer, and Atticus Hanrahan (Sandia Prep), and others show up regulary in the box scores and it's always cool to see their names. Others also show up in many of the other sports in which they were involved such as football (Bryan Blaine, Nick Linden), swimming (Joel Langsfeld), golf (Elliot Feng), and many others. It is always a treat for the coaches who assisted in the players athletic development, whether it was for one year or many years, to see them as they progress. In the coming years, it will be great to see all of the current Scorpions '96 (Red and Gold team) players years as they continue on with soccer and with their other primary sports and activities. The true rewards as a youth coach, are when "your guys" come back and say HI, drop you a note, or help out with practices. And as a coach, I follow as many of the formers players (almost 150 now) from past teams such as the Zia Dust Devils'87 (my son's team), Cabritos, FCW Flames, Scorps'91, and now the Scorps'96 teams. "Scorps-Red Begin U13 Play in LA Tourney"
- As a U12B team, playing "UP" at U13B for the Fall'07 season, the Red team tried their first tourney of the season by going up to LA (Los Alamos that is) for the Blastoff Tournament. The weather was hot, dry, windy, and the team played at elevation so fitness levels of the boys were tested right off the bat. But the team came through with flying colors, beating the NSC T-Hawks (6-0) and the AYSO rep team, Con Fuego, (7-3) on Saturday and ending up in the finals versus the NM Clash Scorpions. In "Scorpion Bowl III" we saw that the south valley Scorpions had added a couple strong players to their roster over the summer, and that our Scorps-Red team has some work to do defensively to match up with older, faster teams. Still, a 2nd Place medal in our first tourney was a nice way to start the season, and we made lists of all the practice topics we will focus on during the season.
The NM Clash Fiesta Kickoff Tournament over Labor Day weekend generally finds the Scorps out at the Bernalillo soccer complex, with coach Jeff scrambling between games and teams. This year, the Gold team was flighted in the U12B Flight 1(Gold) bracket, and the Red team was placed in the U13B Flight 2 (Silver) grouping. After the teams re-mixed over the summer, both are somewhat In-Between (Gold-Silver level brackets) and not really sure where to play and be competitive............. If either team is placed in a Gold bracket, they will struggle a bit, while in the Silver brackets they will likely win most of their games. This will be the case the entire year, and was the case in the Fiesta Kickoff with the Red team winning their flight with four straight wins, medals, and a trophy; while the Gold team had some guys out of town for the holiday weekend, and had their hands full in all four games. Highlights of the weekend included the Red team notching their 10th straight win over their rivals, and a much improved, NMR Extreme team; and the Gold team's hard-fought battles in spltting 2 games with the RVFC Mustangs.
Joining other top regional teams (2 each from Las Cruces, El Paso, and Chihuahua, MX), the RVFC Scorpions-Red and the RVFC Reds travelled to LC for the first International Fall Friendies "Tournament". Played over the weekend of Sept. 15-16 at the Burn Lake fields and at the NMSU campus, the 8 teams battled each other in pools of four......... no points, no medals/trophies, no scoreboards; just the chance to PLAY SOCCER versus several quality teams in the region. Each team kicked in enough to cover the referee crews cost with no other costs. Our THANKS go out to Jeff Thompson and Diego Herrera from LC for setting up the friendlies, and for our teams for just having a good time playing the game. Oh yeah, we won a couple, lost a couple, tried some new defensive alignments, got sunburned, ate some great food in LC, and generally had a relaxed fall trip and a good time with our soccer FRIENDS from LC and EP. We hope to do it again........ ATRM (After the Re-Mix) - Last year both the Red and Gold teams were rolling along and winning roughly 80% of their games, winning/medalling in almost every tourney, and were fairly comfortable with the competition within their true age group. But the Re-Mix, and playing one team up in U13B Premier and the other staying in U12B Premier (but without a few key players), has changed things and is not without it's growing pains. Both teams are struggling to find consistency, playing great in some games: Scorps Red beating EP Elite for the first time in LC, but losing to the LC Strikers/Fusion....Gold tying NMR Atlantis, then the next week getting clobbered for the first time...and we are already in the 4th week of league play !!!
The boys had FUN!!! Scorps Silver/Gold/Platinum Excel at 3v3 Tournaments - Over the July 21-22 weekend, the Scorpions entered two teams in the Dick's Sporting Goods Kick-It 3v3 tournament in Albuquerque, and placed two teams in the top 5. The Scorps-Gold team (Erny, Nick, Stephen, Nathan, Ryan, and Justin) placed third, and the Scorps-Silver (KrisT, Lorenzo, Tabor, ChrisG, Sebastian, and Greg) team won the consolation bracket and finished 5th. Both teams qualified for the Rocky Mountain 3v3 Regionals in Vail, CO......... but due to costs, family vacations and other conflicts, opted to not attend THIS year. Highlights of this tourney included the Silver team's exciting win over TDAC-BLK, and the Gold team's tie with the Reds, and close games with the Hooligans (Amarillo), and the Club America Rhinos (El Paso). A third Scorpions team, Scorps-Platinum, was mostly out of town on family vacations during this weekend, but had already received an invitation to the RM Regionals in Vail based on last year's 3rd place finish, and trips to Nationals (Orlando, Fla in 2006 and San Antonio, TX in 2007)...... this team had also WON the Rocky Mtn 3v3 Regionals in Vail, CO in 2005, and was invited back to Vail as a past champion. Scorpions-Platinum Pull Major Upset at Regionals and Qualify for "Nationals" -- Even without much practice prior to their trip to Vail, CO over the August 3-5 weekend, the Scorps-Platinum 3v3 team (Devin, Achyut, Stephen, Jason, Nathan and Marshall) called upon their previous experience and pulled off one of the "major upsets" of the tournament. The Scorps faced one of the top-ranked 3v3 teams in the country in the (Colorado Rush Fury) Panthers in their 6th game of the weekend, and won a thrilling 8-4 victory, and advanced to the semi-finals.......... assuring the team of a top four finish, and another invitation to the 3v3 Nationals in Orlando, Florida in January 2008. The team also played exceptionally well in close overtime "golden goal" losses in the semi-finals and on PKs in the third/fourth place games, as injuries and playing 8 games at 8,000+ feet elevation took it's toll on the team. The game with the Panthers was also one of the most colorful games of the tourney, as the Scorps broke in their Barcelona away (lime green?) jerseys, and the Panthers had some almost flourescent pink and black jerseys ('guess pink is the new "IN" color???). This was an extremely strong field of 3v3 teams, and our pool had three of the top 6 finishers, so we basically beat up on each other for two days before the Sunday elimination rounds. I don't know how the boys managed FOUR games on Sunday!!?? Another fun, but exhausting weekend, and a long drive home in the middle of the night.........
