WELCOME TO SACO JUNIOR TROJANS

WELCOME to the official website for the Saco Junior Trojans youth football and cheering league! Please check this site periodically for league news, registration information, schedules, game results, and much more.   

2008 REGISTRATION INFORMATION

Still interested in playing football for Saco Junior Trojans but missed the registration dates?  Please see the "Handouts" page to download a registration flyer.  To register by mail, download the registration form by clicking the link at the bottom of this page or from the handouts page.  Saco Junior Trojans is open to any child entering grades 2-8 who resides in Saco, Dayton or Arundel, but space is limited.  If you have any questions, call Paul Remmes at 282-1140. 

IMPORTANT DATES 

Important dates to know for the 2008 football season:

Week of August 11: Middle School team practice begins
August 19, 20 and 21: Grades 2-6 Player evaluations
Weeks of August 25 and Sept 2: Grades 2-6 Two weeks of preseason practice
Saturday, August 30: Tag day, TA Exhibition game, and Jr. Trojans Field Day
Sunday, August 31: Middle School season opener against Bonney Eagle (Away)
Saturday, September 6: Grades 2-6 season opener  

Each grade (2-6) will have one night of evaluations before the start of practices. These sessions are not tryouts but just an opportunity for the coaches to evaluate the players so the teams can be divided as fairly as possible.  Evaluations for all 5th graders are on Tuesday, August 19, evaluations for all 3rd and 6th graders are on Wednesday, August 20 and evaluations for all 2nd and 4th graders are on Thursday, August 21.  Practices for all players grades 2-6 will begin on Monday 8/25. Evaluations and all practices are at Thornton Academy practice field (behind gym).   The 2008 evaluation / practice schedules, Middle School game schedule and schedule for the TA Field Day and Tag Day on August 30 may be dowloaded from the Handouts page.  

For grades 2-6, the first games are on Saturday, September 6.  All games are played on Saturdays, Varsity (5th & 6th grade) games at 9:00 am, JV (4th & 5th grade) games to follow at approximately 10:30 am and Jr division (2nd & 3rd grade) games follow at approximately 12:00 noon.  All teams play a seven game regular season schedule and a "Battle of the Bridge" game against Biddeford Youth Football teams at the end of the season.  Game schedules for each team will be provided as soon as possible.

COACHING CLINICS

TA Coaching Clinics: Thornton Academy head football coach Kevin Kezal and his staff will be conducting two coaching clinics for all Junior Trojan Coaches. The clinics are on Tuesday 7/29 and Thursday 7/31, 6:00 - 9:00 pm in the TA Gym. Each Clinic will consist of three one hour sessions for a total of six hours of instruction. A detailed schedule of each clinic session is below. All Junior Trojan head coaches and anyone interested in being an assistant coach should attend both clinics. Please bring your Junior Trojan Teaching Progression Manual. Copies will be available at the first meeting for those who do not have one.

Session 1:  6:00-6:50 pm  Jack Morrison – Offensive Overview & Philosophy at the Freshmen Level
Session 2:  7:00-7:50 pm  Dick Agreste – Linebackers
Session 3:  8:00-8:50 pm  Kevin Kezal – Defensive Overview & Philosophy at the Freshmen Level 
Thursday, July 31st
Session 4:  6:00-6:50 pm  Nick Tabor – Offensive Line
Session 5:  7:00-7:50 pm  Kirk Agreste – Wide Receivers & Tight Ends
Session 6:  8:00-8:50 pm  Kevin Kezal – Quarterbacks & Running Backs

CHEERING NEWS!

Practice for Grades 7 & 8 begin on Tuesday, July 29.  Practice for Grades 2-6 begin Tuesday, August 12.  All practices will be held at Thornton Academy starting at 5:30 pm.

The Thornton Academy Youth Cheering Camp is being held from August 4th - August 8th at Thornton Academy.  For more details, download the Cheering Camp brochure on the Handouts page. 

2008 TA SUMMER FOOTBALL CAMP 

The dates for the TA summer football camp have been announced.   The camp runs from August 4th to August 8th and is open to all players grades 2-8. We strongly recommend all Junior Trojan football players attend this camp.  It’s a great opportunity for the players to work with the TA coaching staff and to learn fundamental football skills as well as some of the TA plays, drills and terminology that they will be using during the season. Please see the Handouts page for a camp brochure.  Players should register before July 21.

ABOUT SACO JUNIOR TROJANS:

Saco Junior Trojans
is a football and cheering league in Saco, Maine, providing football and cheering opportunities for the youth of Saco, Dayton, and Arundel, Maine.

Saco Junior Trojans is a tax exempt organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, classifed as a public charity and not as a private foundation. A copy of our IRS tax exempt determination letter may be downloaded from the Handouts page.

Middle School Division
The Junior Trojans Middle School division competes in the Southern Maine Youth Football League. Separate 8th and 7th grade teams compete against 8th and 7th grade teams from throughout Southern Maine.

4th, 5th and 6th Grade Division
Teams comprised of boys and girls in grades 4, 5, and 6 compete in the Maine Sportsmanship League. This division is divided into the Varsity and Junior Varsity divisions, allowing participants to continue to develop their football skills, and to compete against other teams with similar abilities. However, fourth graders never play against sixth graders! Other teams in the Maine Sportsmanship League include teams from Old Orchard Beach, Windham, Scarborough, and Cape Elizabeth.

2nd & 3rd Grade Division
The 2nd & 3rd Grade Division is a developmental football program for boys and girls in the second and third grades. The purpose of the Junior Division is to introduce boys and girls to football in a safe, fun environment, while teaching basic football skills and rules.

Cheering
Saco Junior Trojans cheering offers cheering opportunities for kids from second grade through eighth grade. The different teams cheer at all Saco Junior Trojan football games.  If you have questions about the cheering program, call Bethany Cyr at 590-8026 or Lisa Perkins at 423-5186.

SPORTS DONE RIGHT

Saco Junior Trojans is proud to participate in Sports Done Right, developed by Maine Center for Sport and Coaching (MCSC) at the University of Maine. MCSC provides professional development for coaches at all levels in Maine schools and communities. It serves as a resource center for schools, communities, parents, student-athletes and others concerned with issues and trends in youth and interscholastic sport. MCSC's primary purpose is to advance the knowledge and practice of sport principles that promote safe, accessible and positive educational and developmental experiences for Maine youth.
