Words of Advice for Parents from USA Swimming
+Model good sportsmanship. Being a 'good sport' is much easier said than done. You can model good sportsmanship by encouraging and supporting all swimmers, controlling your emotions when upset or frustrated, and abiding by coaches' and official's decisions even if you disagree.
++Model team spirit and loyalty. Cheer for your team and have only positive things to say about the team and coach.
Let go of your own ego. Put your child's development and desires ahead of your own. Examine your motives for your child's participation.
+++Have fun. If you are having fun and enjoying the swimming experience, it is more likely that your child will do the same. If you complain and don't enjoy yourself, your child will pattern that behavior also.
++++Help the team as a volunteer. Your role as a volunteer is crucial to our sport. You can be actively involved in your child's activity, meet new people, have fun, and be instrumental in strengthening swimming in the U.S. Ask the coach or the volunteer coordinator for your team what you can do to help. No experience is necessary for most jobs. Don't wait to be asked, be a volunteer!
REMEMBER, A STRONG TEAM FOUNDATION IS BUILT WHEN WE ALLOW THE COACHES TO TEACH OUR TURTLE SWIMMERS PROPER TECHNIQUE AND GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP! GIVE THE COACHES AND OUR SWIMMERS YOUR FULL SUPPORT THROUGHOUT THE SEASON AS A VOLUNTEER AND ROLE MODEL!

Remember Parents ... Become Involved ... But Not Too Involved
| Be
Involved |
But Not
Too Involved |
| Every swim team needs
enthusiastic involvement from parents to be successful. Volunteering
your time not only helps your child's team; it's also an enjoyable way
to make new friends. |
No swimming coach wants to be - or
should be - second guessed by parents on coaching decisions. |
Here are a few ways
to become involved:
- Be an official
- Be a timer, runner or run the "mouse house"
- Be a team representative at LBSL meetings
- Set up/break down equipment at swim meets
- Be an announcer
- Help in raising money
- Be a meet director or assistant meet director
- Drive car pools
- Work concessions
- Sell 50/50 Tickets
- Set a good example for your child
- Join a committee
|
Signs of parents
being too closely involved include these:
- You are overly concerned with the outcome of
an event.
- You spend a lot of time talking to the coach
about race strategy, swimmers skill levels, the way he or she
conducted practices, and how he or she coaches at meets
- Your child has stopped enjoying swimming or
has asked you to stop coming to meets or practices
- You require your child to take extra
practice
