Oshawa Kicks Soccer Club History
|
|
The Oshawa Kicks Soccer Club got its start in 1975 as the Oshawa Soccer Club. The Club was started by the President John Ordanis and Vice President Frank Sobil.
The Club ran soccer camps in the fall and started up with 4 boys teams in 1976, all called the Spartans at that time. These teams played in the Oshawa and District Youth Soccer League as competitive teams. This organization is now called Durham Region Soccer Association. In 1980, Terry Kelly help found the Oshawa Kicks Soccer Club as a senior mens team with the help of Steve Stavro. In order to help out this senior team in Oshawa, the new name for the teams became the Oshawa Kicks of the Oshawa Soccer Club. In 1990 the Oshawa Soccer Club became the Oshawa Kicks Soccer Club with the help of Josef Neubauer, solicitor of the old Oshawa Kicks Soccer Club.
In the very first year the Clubs team of boys born in 1967 made it to the finals of the Ontario Cup but lost in the final game. In 1979 the Club started the girls teams that played in the Durham Girls Soccer League as House League teams. Then in 1982, three of the girls teams moved into the Competitive Division of the Durham Girls League.
For the 1983 season, Club had 8 boys teams and 5 girls teams playing soccer. Of the 13 teams in the Club, 12 teams were playing in competitive soccer leagues.
The Kicks teams have done very well over the years winning many league championships, play-off championships and 1 Ontario Cup Championship by the girls team born in 1986, which they one in 2001. This team advanced to the Ontario Cup finals in 2002 but lost out in the finals. In 2001 and 2002 the Oshawa Kicks girls team, 1986, was rated the number one team in Ontario, along with the girls team born in 1990 being rated number one in 2002.
