The Nova Scotia Senior Baseball League is the premier baseball league in Nova Scotia, and has been since its inception in 1977.

2008 season begins May 20

The 2008 Nova Scotia Senior Baseball League season is set to begin May 20 at the TAAC Grounds in Truro. Formed in 1977, the NSSBL has been a summer staple on the provincial sports scene and has produced four Canadian championship clubs.

All five teams from the 2007 season -- defending champion Dartmouth Moosehead Dry, the Halifax Pelham Canadians, Kentville Wildcats, Sydney Sooners and Truro Bearcats -- are back for this year. Interleague play against the five New Brunswick Senior Baseball League entries will continue this season, with New Brunswick hosting interleague games June 21-22, and Nova Scotia hosting July 12-13. The 29-game regular season is slated to end Aug. 9, with the top four regular-season finishers qualifying for the playoffs.

The Nova Scotia champion will play the New Brunswick champion in a best-of-five Maritime championship series, tentatively scheduled to begin the weekend of Sept. 26-27. The Nova Scotia champion will host the first two games, with the New Brunswick champion at home for the remainder of the series.

Dartmouth will represent the province at the Canadian senior championship Aug. 21-24 in Brandon, Man. Dartmouth will also host the 2009 nationals, thereby receiving automatic entry. A second NSSBL team will also qualify for the 2009 Canadian championship.

Terry Dunbrack of Pictou was voted in as new NSSBL vice-president at the league meeting April 12, succeeding Craig Gorveatt of Hantsport, who is retiring after two years' service. The remainder of the league executive was elected to another one-year term. Returning are Jim McEachern of Sydney (president/chief administrative officer), Kay Sperdakes of Lower Sackville (secretary/treasurer), Burton Russell of Kentville (statistician), Jody Jewers of Halifax (director of public relations) and Peter Craig of Dartmouth (past-president).
