Welcome to the website for the 2008 - 2009 Matawan High School Wrestling team.
Rutgers vs. Princeton on Saturday 9am bus
The 08-09 team looks tough. We have returning starters in Tommy Dillon, Devon Rust, Johnny Short, Ces Antista, Danny Salib, Ed McCarthy, John Kozman, Chris Carillo, Billy Gregory, Charlie Cook, Rob Rivera, Jordan Long, Jimmy Alvarez and Chris Howley.
Two returning wrestlers have 30 wins: Johnny Short and Ces Antista.
Several 20 win wreslters returning: Tommy Dillon, Charlie Cook, Chris Carillo and Rob Rivera.
Some outstanding JV wrestlers who got alot of Varsity time last year and will contribute on the Varsity Mat will be Pat O'Donnell, Tibor Ross, Dave Silverman and Mike Lawrence and Andre Hodge. Hodge will make a push for a starting spot up top. Plus a few sophs will be making their way back to the wrestling mat in Zeke Vega and MacArthur Underwood III.
This season we have about 25 freshman in the room and that promises a strong future.

2008 - 2009 milestones
Two Wrestlers can earn 100 wins -- Ces Antista and Johnny Short
We can and will qualify the most wrestlers for the Regions in school history.

We have the largest Senior Class in recent memory. Howley, Antista, King, Rivera, Santiago, Gregory, McCarthy, Avila, and Jones.
Monday, March 3
Johnny falls one win short of States
The weekend rounds at the region six wrestling tournament saw 2 Matawan wrestlers alove on the final day but both fell short of making it to Atlantic City.
Johnny Short placed 4th in region six losing to Walters of Southern for 3rd place 5-3. Johnny beat Walters Friday night 3-2 to advance to the semi-finals. In the Semi-sinals, Zac Coulas of Ocean defeated Short to put him in the wrestlebacks. In the consolation semi-finals he battered Chris Fraley pinning him in the last second. Up 6-2 with 15 seconds left a cement job ended the career for Fraley. Johnny finished with a school record 36 wins.
Ces Antista had a heartbreaking loss in the quarterfinals. Up 6-2 with 3 more backpoints waiting to be awarded, Ces got called for a defensive pin. In the wrestlebacks he won 9-8 against pinelands but fell to Wall's Frank Labruschiano 5-0. That gave Ces a 5/6 place finish and a final record of 33-8.

Antista wins 75th
Ces Antista won his 75th career match against Rumson on fan appreciation night to move into second place on the all time school wins list.
Matawan Defeated Rumson 63-10 in a match that saw astrong win from Rob Rivera. Johnny Short, Jordan Long, Ed McCarthy, Tommy Dillon, and Jimmy Alvarez all won by pin to pace the Huskies.
Two consecutive overtime wins by Sophomore John Kozman and Freshman Dan Salib paces the Huskies through the middle.
