5th Annual Kumu'ohu Challenge Results
Six MAPA paddlers traveled to DC compete in the first race in the ECORA OC-1/OC-2 race season. Everyone had a great time and five MAPA paddlers brought home hardware. Rusty and Leza placed first in mixed OC-2 and came oh-so-close to beating a men's OC-2. Kyle won the men's open, Tim Jones came in second in men's senior master and Margo finished second in the women's masters. The weather was spectacular and the race course was, as always, about 2 miles too long. Check out the pictures on the album page. Race results link to follow.

Bennett's Creek Bash Race Report

MAPA paddlers once again prove their reputation as the hardiest paddlers on the East Coast as they came out to race in rainy windy conditions once again. A small but tough group of paddlers had a good race and great eats.

Multi-Club Picnic New Quarter Park

MAPA had a great showing at the first Multi-club picnic held at New Quarter Park in Yorktown. Despite of cold sleeting raining weather the picnic had a good turn out of clubs and members. MAPA put on quite a show racing in the sleet/rain and wind proving that racers will paddle in anything. Chuck finished first in a surf ski followed by Rusty and Leza in a C-2. Phil held off a charge by Ron to come in third. Margo & Freda finished fifth. The real men paddling C-1s were delayed by Greg's brief swim. Kyle, Tim, Charlie and Greg all proved their toughness racing in windy choppy challenging conditions.

Hamburgers and hotdogs were provided by Appomatox River Co. Participating clubs included Chesapeake Association of Seakayakers (CASK), Chesapeake Paddlers, Coastal Canoist, a Windsurfing club, Geocaching club, Rowers, Kayak anglers, Appalachian Trail Club, Eastern VA Mountain Biking Association and several other outdoor clubs. Everyone had a great time wandering around and checking out the gear and various club activities. The OC-6 made was a definite attraction.

McLainsFL
The McLains traveled all the way to Florida this weekend and picked up the new MAPA OC-6. Along the way the stopped for a great small boat race just above Orlando. Rusty & Leza needed to add some miles to their racing this season since they didn't have enough already.

Resolution Paddle and Run

We had a nice turnout for the annual Resolution Paddle on New Years Day. The paddle in New Market Creek was spectacular with four C-2s and two kayaks. Everyone who stuck around and ran the 5K at Sentara had a great time. It was a great way to start out 2008.

MAPA in Hawaii
Congratulations to Susie Johnston and Lisa Jones on their second place Master's finish at the Blue Makua in Hawaii. Susie and Lisa teamed up with some friends to race Saturday Oct 13th while on vacation in Hawaii. Vacation in Hawaii....$, wood paddles for an OC-6 race in Hawaii.... $, bringing home hardware and race schwage.....priceless.

Outdoorsman Triathlon
Congratulations to Jim Farrington on his second place Masters Men's finish in the 2007 Outdoorsman Triathlon. Jim also competed in the relays on Sunday and finished first Masters Men team. The Outdoorman's Triathlon is the oldest in the United States.  Saturday's individual triathlon consisted of three events done consecutively by each competitor, swimming, running, and canoeing.  The race began with a 1 mile (approximate) swim over a deep-water course marked with buoys.  Competitors then ran approximately four miles along hilly, paved roads to the starting point of the canoeing on the Little Tennessee River.  They then paddled down the Little Tennessee to ake Fontana and back to the starting point at Highway 28 Bridge.  The canoeing segment was approximately 8 miles, about half of which is on the river (class II) and half on the lake.  Sunday's relay competition consisted of three-person teams (1 swimmer, 1 runner, 1 paddler) competing over the same course.

15 Paddlers participated in the 1st Annual Ocean View Pier Challenge KISS Race/Regatta held on Sunday 8/12/07 with almost perfect weather conditions. See results below. Long course was about 4.93 miles from OV Pier to HRBT (through both spans around any piling) and back to the beach on the west side of the pier and running up to touch the MALIA OC-6).  First in was Randy Drake with a blistering time under 46 minutes. Chuck Conley had an adjustable paddle, adjust to minimum length, and maximum angle during the race.
Jim Farrington paddled 5 plus miles to get to the race start.
Two first time OC-1 paddlers participated (Francine Blend and Gary McLain). These same two brave souls also included a swim portion to the event. Thank you to Francine for cutting her race short to help with the results.

Kent Island - Quit While You're Ahead Races July 14
Kent Island Outrigger Canoe Club sponsored a new event for 2007 – the Quit While You’re Ahead races. Paddlers from KIOCC, NCA, Manu’iwa, and MAPA gathered for a fun day of racing. Margo, Margo’s daughter Abby, Lisa, and Susie represented MAPA. Paddlers signed up for women’s, men’s, and mixed OC-6 races as well as OC-1, OC-2 and surf ski races. Teams were formed with most teams comprised of members from each of the ECORA teams. Many of the paddlers were first year paddlers or folks returning to paddling after some time off. The course was set up in a 2 mile loop to facilitate the “quit while you’re ahead” rules. Boats coming across the line at the 2 mile mark could decide if they wanted to accept their current placement or continue on and compete in a 4 mile or 6 mile race. All the races were very competitive with boats crossing the finish in close time of one another. As a highlight, Abby paddled in the Mixed Team event and really enjoyed it. Paddlers were rewarded with a delicious pot luck cookout at the end of the day. The MAPA gang had a great time enjoying the wonderful Ohana at KI and soaking up the beautiful day. If you've never been to Kent Island and seen their great site at the Yacht Club you've really missed a treat.

Fisherman's Island Report
Six folks turned out for the Fisherman's Island paddle. With Southern winds building throughout the morning the day turned out to be an epic adventure. The group put in at the Nature Preserve and paddled counterclockwise around the Island. Everyone knew it was going to be an eventful day when 15 minutes into the paddle Tim's ama came loose and he took a swim near the bridge.

The group paddled under the bridge and out to the ocean to play in the big waves. On the south east side of Fisherman's Island the swells were moving to the south east with wind chop blowing in directly from the south. Waves were staking up and breaking over the shallows. Charlie and Kyle decided to tempt fate and paddle in close. From our vantage point farther out we watched them paddle through what Charlie described as "hell's kitchen".

The tide was ripping in and progress was slow around the end of the island. Progress was even slower because we couldn't keep Charlie from turning towards shore to surf. We finally made it to the north east end of the island and realized we needed to go through a huge breaking section of waves to get to the bay and our take out. We turned and headed in through what looked like 4-5 footers. As we got closer a huge wave broke just over the stern of Rusty and Leza on thier new OC-2 and promptly hulied them. We finally made it over the last sandbar and into quieter water.

The trip was capped off with watermelon at the take out. All in all a great day on the water and a great paddle. I wouldn't recommend Fisherman's Island for novice paddlers but it certainly was a confidence builder for those of us leary of big waves. Check out the pictures on the album page. I didn't take any pictures in the big stuff because I was too nervous to operate the camera.

Paddle for the Border
Several of our members participated in Paddle for the Border on the Dismal Swamp canal. Rusty, Leza, Margo and Freda all used Paddle for the Border as an opportunity to get some seat time in for the up coming General Clinton. Linda K, Michele and Linda also supported the event and paddled a C-2 and a sea kayak. Great job MAPA paddlers for supporting a local recreational paddling event!

A few hardy folks helped put the Malia on the beach Wednesday night. The stiff South East breeze kept the gang from paddling the Malia but Jim Farrington proved we are all weenies by paddling his OC-1. Make sure you thank Susie, Margo, Lisa, Leza, Charlie, Tim, Jim, Freda, Cameron and Coach Rusty next time you paddle the Malia.

Feb 28th New Market Cleanup
CanoeTrash

MAPA continues the effort to keep New Market Creek clean. Seven MAPA members came to the creek cleanup Wednesday, Feb 28th and combed the marsh to fill over 12 plastic bags with trash. Several bags were filled with nothing but glass and plastic bottles tossed from the interstate. The item of the day was the fishing rod that Tim found. The attempt to get the fishing rod may have secured the 2007 aquaman award for Tim. Special thanks to Jim Farrington for taking a few pictures of the bounty that was secured. Please come out for the next cleanup. The creek really needs our help.

New Year's Day Resolution Paddle and Brunch
Thanks to everyone for coming out New years day for the annual resolution paddle. The weather was better than expected although a bit on the windy side. It’s always great to start the new year off with good company paddling on New Market. After the paddle we headed to Freda’s for brunch and some social time. Susie, Leza, Rusty, Tim and Freda went to Sentara for the Annual Denise Suits 5K after filling up with brunch. For 5K results go to http://www.peninsulatrackclub.com/2007/Sentara5Kall.pdf

Rusty and Leza must be doing something right because they both improved their 5K times from last year. Rusty improved by 1:54 and Leza improved by 1:56. Who’s pushing who to get faster?!

We had a good turnout for the second annual MLK Dismal Swamp Paddle. Although the weather wasn't as perfect as last year it was pretty darn good for January with temperatures climbing close to 70. This year we had kayakers outnumbering the usual suspects in canoes. We were especially glad to have Mike Kehoe and Katherine Long join us in their kayaks. Wind conditions didn't allow us to go out on Lake Drummond but a few of us were able to get in 10 miles between the feeder ditch and an extra section of canal. All in all a great paddle for the nine folks that came out. Check out the pictures on the Album page.

New Market Creek Cleanup

In spite of the small turnout and chilly temperatures we had a successful cleanup at New Market Creek Wednesday, Jan 24. Tires, toys, plastic cups & bottles, oil cans are just some of the items that were retrieved from the creek. It's disheartening to know that folks just carelessly toss trash into our waterways and bay. Please come out and help at the next cleanup. We barely made a dent so there is plenty of work to be done.

Congrats to Susie Johnston for taking 2nd Masters and Kathleen McNamee for taking 2nd Open in the ECORA OC-1 Points Series. Susie worked hard last year paddling extra practices and racing every race she could and it paid off in the point series races. She accumulated extra points in every ECORA series race she participated in. Kathleen wins 2nd Open for the second year in a row. Susie and Kathleen were the only MAPA member to qualify for an award in the ECORA point series. We should all aspire to have thier work (or is that play) ethic in 2007.

ECORA News
Just made it back from the Wilmington, DE, the ECORA meeting and a Sunday AM workout with the WCC gals. Whew...glad I don't do that every weekend. The meeting went well and the schedule is now posted on the website. There are a couple of changes this year. There is a new OC-6 race on June 9th in Toronto hosted by Wai Nui. Monumental has been moved later to June 23rd. It doesn't look like Philly sprints will return and in an effort to keep a qualifying race for World Sprints KI will be hosting a sprint race August 18th. It will be very informal this year and could possibly be moved to the Potomac next year. One big change this year will be the race scheduling meeting for 2008 will be held the Sunday after KI relay. The issue of rearranging the schedule for 2008 will be ironed out at that meeting.

I picked up 2 demo Hypr canoes in Wilmington Friday night so if anyone wants to try them out drop me an email (frosso@cox.net). I have the Makia and Holo Nui made by Hypr. Bill Gassett has a Fuse available for demo as well. So try out a canoe, buy the one you like and race the OC-1 series this year.

Lynnhaven Race Report
LR 2008 start

What a outstanding day for a race. As usual Susie did a great job planning and organizing the race and she even order extra special weather. MAPA is proud to support the Lynnhaven Now organization and we hope to continue to grow the race and provide a larger donation each year. Big thanks to Bill Gassett for bringing extra toys for everyone to try out. The standup paddle boards were a big hit and we are all looking forward to a short downwind run at Buckroe.

Amy McLain did a great job taking pictures for us. Big Cheer for Amy!

*** We had a beautiful day at First Landing State Park paddling on the Lynnhaven River! I want to thank all the paddlers who came out to support this event. Ken Walls drove down from New York, and Ed Arnaldo joined us from Richmond. We were also priviledged to have Karen Forget join us from Lynnhaven River Now - thanks to their leadership, large sections of the river are open to shellfish harvest. Thanks to all our volunteers: Brendan, Linda, April, Robin, Margo, Chris, Don, Dennis, and Linc! Mahalo, Susie ***
