Just wanted you to know that Phil and I finished the Rappahannock Canoe races June 8. Phil, won his class, in the long race and the Sprint, great job for a 1st timer, I won the C1 long race, and the C2 long race with Kirk as my race partner, we also won the C2 sprint, but Kirk beat me by 3 sec. in the C1 sprint to take 1st. A side note, they pulled Phil's name out of the hat for the boat, and I tried to pass as Phil but it didn't work, I think it was the hair. He needs to stay for awards next time. Was a fun time, but very hot and the water was low, great combo.
Windy conditions gave racers a great opportunity to practice some real open water paddling. After battling a mean headwind to the channel marker racers turned the mark and enjoyed a well deserved long downwind paddle. Smiles were the order of the day and everyone agreed the downwind surf was the highlight of the race. MAPA thanks everyone who traveled the highways to come play in our backyard. Our most heated contest of the race was the OC-2 battle between Matt & Liz and Rusty & Leza for a photo finish. Matt & Liz just inched out the McLains by a second.
We also want to thank Bill Gassett for bringing the great Standup Paddle Board toys. Congrats to all the SUP race participants. Check back for results from the SUP race.
