Lincroft Little League - Where Dreams Begin
Welcome to the official web site of the Lincroft Little League - Where Dreams Begin. Lincroft Little League is a league rich in tradition. With some of the best facilities in all of New Jersey, Lincroft Little League boasts over 100 teams of boys and girls of all ages. It is likely you are a parent or a coach if you are visiting our site, we thank you for your time, energy and support. Take a moment and review the rest of this site. By familiarizing yourself with field locations, rain out procedures and board member names, we hope your experiences, and those of your children, are positive. A reminder regarding volunteer duty - The league runs smoothly through your volunteer efforts as managers, coaches and umpires. Less visible perhaps, but equally critical to our success as a league are those who help out in other capacities including: opening day, buildings & grounds, field cleanup, yearbook, etc. We require that EACH family volunteer to help out in some way - and then fulfill that obligation. In recent years, we have seen an increasing number of families shirk their volunteer duty, make excuses, or simply not show up for the task they volunteered for. That's not acceptable. Period. This league depends entirely on volunteer help - without it we simply don't run. Please take your volunteer responsibility seriously. We offer a buyout option ($100) for families that simply cannot volunteer their time (at most a few hours for the entire season), but would rather have your time than your money. If you fail to show for your volunteer duty, we will assess the $100 buyout fee. Please be mindful of the intent of our league - to foster a learning environment about softball and baseball. It truly is all about the children. This means understanding your role as a coach and as a parent. Root FOR your team, not against the other; let the umpires do their jobs, it is difficult enough without the pressure of an adult. The entire board of directors wish the children, the coaches and the parents a wonderful season. See you on the fields and in the stands! Jeff Iapicco President 2008 LLL Baseball/Softball Summer Camps Lincroft Little League is once again hosting week long, full day, baseball and softball camps this summer. Eric McMahon is our Camp Director and he has arranged to have college and high school coaches, along with former college and minor league players to help instruct at each camp. All instructors have professional camp experience through working at university camps such as Princeton, Clemson and West Point. Click here additional information on the 2008 Summer Camp program. Too Much Baseball is Not a Good Thing Click here for some words of wisdom offered in a column by Little League International President and Chief Executive Officer Stephen D. Keener, reprinted from the 2005 Little League Baseball World Series Program.
From the Lincroft Little League By-Laws: Article Two - Purpose and Objective "The purpose and objective of the League shall be to implant firmly in the children of the community the ideals of good sportsmanship, honesty, loyalty, courage and respect for authority, so that they will be well adjusted, stronger and happier children who will grow to be good, decent, healthy and trustworthy adults; and to thereby promote the health, social, educational and character development of our youth. All persons involved in this league, however, shall bear in mind that ATTAINMENT OF EXCEPTIONAL ATHLETIC SKILL AND THE WINNING OF GAMES IS SECONDARY(emphasis added), and the molding of future men and women is of prime importance." We define ourselves, therefore, as a RECREATIONAL league wherein the level of competition is determined by the children, and not the adults. In a society where youth sports are increasingly plagued by exploitation, boorish behavior and even violence on the part of adults, and where 75% of children walk away from organized sports by the age of 13, we see our market as the children, and our mission as serving their needs. Within that context, no enterprise which loses 75% of its client base can be judged as successful. N.B. Recent articles in the Wall Street Journal and other publications have put the rate of attrition from organized youth baseball at 10% in the last 3 years and near 30% in the last 10. Jim Sundberg, a former major league player, and his wife, Janet, a psychologist, wrote a book called "Sports Parenting" in which they included the following survey of what boys and girls like MOST and LEAST about playing sports. Here goes: BOYS MOST LEAST 1.Relationships 1.Losing 2.Having fun 2.Parental pressure 3.Competition 3.Degrading comments 4.Developing character about performance GIRLS MOST LEAST 1.Relationships 1.Losing 2.Developing character 2.Time Commitment 3.Competition 3.Parental pressure 4.Having fun Enough said? Points to Ponder for the Off Season "A man never stands so tall as when he stoops to help a child." ----- Sparky Anderson ----- "Baseball is a children's game that adults mostly screw up." ----- Bob Lemon ----- "Sports do not build character....They reveal it." ----Heywood Broun, journalist----
At a time when youth sports has become "big business", and the general anxiety level regarding kids' athletic development and performance rises seemingly day by day, we are disturbed to note the paradox of parents leaving it to the "experts" when the stark reality is that serious issues of their own children's physical and emotional well being are at stake. The truth is that ultimate responsibility for a child's welfare lies with the parents and that only through involvement and education can parents protect their children from becoming "casualties" of organized sports. Resources are available. The web site listed above is a terrific source of information on a wide range of youth sports issues. Just click on it for instant access. Click on the "Parent's Page" at left as well for a list of resources available to those people who believe their children deserve the best that youth sports has to offer.
