Dodgers Fall Short Of Ultimate Goal
Blue Beats Arrows, Can't Get Over Stallions Hump
The Dodgers had high hopes coming into championship weekend. The coveted wood bat trophy was ripe for the taking this year. The league was very close from teams 1-4, and no team could have been called a surprise champion. The Dodgers faced a tough Arrows team in game one. They faced an even tougher challenge after their leadoff man went yard to make the score 1-0. The Dodgers were persistent though. Facing one of the league's best pitchers, Eric Teall, the Dodgers scratched and clawed their way to a 6-2 victory.
Leading the charge was outfielder Dan Taylor. Taylor drove in the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly and then busted it wide open in the bottom of the 6th inning with a 3 run double. Tommy Daeger, also added an RBI double to help offset an Arrows rally. Pitching was also a high point in this game. Matt Tibbs got the start and delivered 5 excellent innings only giving up 2 runs. Mark Buis entered in a relief effort and pitched four scoreless innings in dominant fashion
In the championship game, the Dodgers felt like they could capitalize on factors such as age, heat, and momentum. The Blue had been swinging as hot a bat as any team this year. Stallions pitcher Keith Hatfield was assigned the task of cooling them off. Keith pitched another one of his patented bend but don't break games, and was down right nasty when he needed to be. The Dodgers collected enough hits to be potent offensively, but could not get that clutch hit to score runs as they lost 3-1. The lone bright spots were another home run by Dustin Waalkens, and some nice defensive plays by Tommy Daeger, Jim Crews, and Dan Taylor. This is the second year out of three that the Dodgers have lost to the Stallions in the championship. The Dodgers certainly tip their caps to a team that despite many older players, continue to prove that they play at an elite level. The Dodgers finish the year with a 17-4 record and a second place finish. A great year no doubt. Stay tuned for information regarding the upcoming MSBL Fall Classic in Clearwater Florida.
Trojans Fall In Playoffs
Dodgers Cruise Behind League High 5 Home Runs
The Dodger's took their 9 game winning streak into the MABL playoffs looking to make it 10. The Trojans, all 8 of them, certainly weren't going to stand in their way. The Dodgers pounded out 22 hits and 5 home runs in a 22-2 rout of the Trojans. Highlighting the day were shortstop Tommy Daeger and Kurt Brabender combining for 8 hits and 3 home runs. Daeger went yard twice and collected 5 RBI's on the day. Brabender added 3 RBI's, 4 runs scored, and 3 stolen bases along with his jack.
Quite literally, the entire team had a great day. Each Dodger hitter collected at least 2 hits. Defensively, the Blue were no slouch either. Matt Bush contributed with a great diving stab on a sharp ground ball. Dan Taylor, playing second base, made a nice over the shoulder catch on a blooper in short center field. Mark Buis was fairly amused by the play. He felt that Taylor did the team a disservice by not bringing out the dancing bears, the clown car, and the trapeze artists for that circus. This writer would tend to agree with him, only he should be careful what he wishes for because the editor of this website might bring out pictures like the one at the top of the page.
For the first time all season, we have a tie for the Tommy Lasorda Player Of The Week Award. This week, it goes to the bash brothers, Tommy Daeger and Kurt Brabender. Congratulations fellas. The Dodger's next game will be against the Arrows at 12:30 at Roncalli HS. If victorious, they will play in the championship game at 3:30 at Decatur Central. Good Luck this coming weekend!

Dodgers Pound Cubs
Buis Goes The Distance In Shutout Victory
Mark Buis has been on the short end of the stick more than his fair share of outings this year. He has quietly had one of the best years in the league as far as starting pitchers. But you wouldn't know looking at the Win column in his stats. More than a few times he has pitched well, but come from behind victories have given the W to a Dodger reliever. Not against the Cubs. Buis went all 7 innings in a rout of the cubs, 12-0. He gave up only 5 hits and struck out three as he recorded his fourth win of the year.
All Star utility player, Kurt Brabender, also had a stellar day. Kurt went 3-4 with all three hits being triples. The three three-baggers vaulted him to the top of the standings in the entire league with 6 on the year. Also having good games for the Dodgers were Damon Grothe (2-3 1 Run, 1 SB), Dustin Waalkens (2-3, 2B) and Jeremy Honaker making his 2008 Dodger Debut. Jeremy recorded a hit in 4 plate appearances but was walked twice.
Mark Buis earns his first Tommy of the year for his complete game effort. Honaker wins the Philly Cheesesteak award for...well, being the namesake for the award. The Dodgers will take on the Trojans in the first round of the playoffs on 8/17/08. Game time 3:30 at Roncalli HS.
Dodgers Beat Undermanned Canes
Montfort, Daeger Lead Surge for Blue's Sixth Consecutive Win
The Dodger's latest victim in their six game winning streat was the always-tough Hurricanes. The Canes were definitely undermanned though, as three of their top players were unable to show. Don't tell that to pitcher Jeff Montfort though. He continued his impressive season notching his sixth win and adding 7 more strikeouts in 8 solid innings on the mound. Even with their missing players, the Canes still field a formidable lineup. Montfort cruised through his 8 innings by only allowing 4 hits and 0 runs. The Hurricanes mounted a rally in the ninth, but eventually fell 6-3.
The offense was held in check by Dodger standards, as the Blue only had 10 hits and 6 runs. However, none of the hits were more important than Tommy Daeger's bases clearing double in the 8th inning. His timely knock doubled the Dodger lead from 3-0 to 6-0 and proved necessary after the Canes scored 3 in the ninth. Others having a terrific day were second baseman Drew Sylvester and Damon Grothe. Drew had a rally-starting hit, stole a base, and made two of the best defensive plays the league will see this year. The highlight was a diving grab of a foul ball in no-man's land up the first base line. Grothe contributed nicely with 2 hits on the day. His second hit came with two outs and led to the rally capped off by Daeger. It should also be noted that Grothe, normally the starting centerfielder, stepped in at catcher for this game, and left his eject-O-mit at home.
Taking home the Tommy this week will be another Tommy. Daeger's clutch hit will earn him his second POTW award of the year. With very honorable mentions going to Montfort, Sylvester and Grothe. The Blue will round out their season this coming weekend against the Cubs and the Rockies. No date has been set yet for the make up game against the Cubs. The Rockies are slated for Sunday 8/11, at 3:30 at Decatur Central.
Blue Sizzling!
Waalkens Dazzles Again As Dodgers Prove Elite
There is no hotter team in the MABL right now than the Dodgers. Just ask the Braves. The Dodgers had won 4 in a row and were looking to put a hurting on a Braves team that beat them earlier in the year. 'Beat into submission' is a more accurate description of what happened last Friday night.
The blue crue was short staffed again with only 9 players, a last minute addition, and a 5th string pitcher and still managed to bludgeon the Braves 18-5. The Dodgers were once again led by right fielder Dustin Waalkens, whose 4-5 effort topped all hitters. Dustin added two homers to his regular season tally and now shares the lead the league with 5 on the year. Dustin's 7 RBI's give him 21 on the year. Not bad for an 8-hole hitter! But that gives you an idea of the weapons the Dodgers have. Waalkens said after the game, "What can I say, I am locked in. I don't really know where the confidence came from, but all I know is that it is there. Now if you will excuse me, I have to go pee in this cup and give it to this guy standing over there..."Tommy Daeger and Dan Taylor each pitched in with 3 hits, Players with 2 hits include: Crews, Ready, Grothe, Sylvester. Everyone in the lineup recorded at least a hit against the Braves' staff. Al Ready pitched 7 gutty innings that kept the Braves hitters off balance most of the night. A special thanks to Mike Kocher for taking first base duties on the night and providing some interesting moments on the field. Next up, a showdown with the Hurricanes at Butler University. 8/3/08 3:30pm
Dodgers Sweep Weekend DH
The Blue Crue Notch Two Big Wins
After All-Star weekend and a washout against the Cubs, the Dodgers were presented with a big challenge. Facing two of the top teams in the league this past weekend, the Dodgers could have fallen to middle-of-the-pack status, or rise to a virtual tie for the best record in the league. The Blue Crue were up to the challenge.
On Friday night, the Dodgers faced a pesky Astros team who would no doubt be looking for revenge after a blowout loss earlier in the year. Mark Buis and the rest of the Dodgers made sure that didn't happen beating the Astros 19-3. After a rocky first inning, The Bus settled into a groove and beat the Astros for his 3rd win of the season. Buis who has come off of three straight no-decisions said it felt good to finally get a W. "It feels good when guys like Taylor and Brabender actually show up to hit in a game where I pitch. Usually those guys see me on the lineup card and then they start looking for tail in the stands."
The bats were in rare form on Friday night as the Dodgerd combined for 20 hits, 18 RBIs, and 3 home runs. Doing the damage was centerfielder Damon Grothe (2-4, HR, 3 RBIs), leftfielder Dan Taylor (2-3, HR, 4 RBIs) and first baseman Matt Bush (1-3, HR, 2 RBIs). Also Kurt Brabender, Tommy Daeger, Miguel Silva and Dustin Waalkens added 3 hits on the night. Jimmy Crews pitched in for 2 hits as well.
With a myiad of choices to choose from, the Tommy award goes to Damon Grothe for cracking his first home run of the year and getting out of a mini-slump. The bomb came at a crucial time for the Dodgers, and really injected a lot of confidence back into Damon's Swing. The Cheesesteak award goes to the three musketeers who bolted for the Motley Crue concert. Taylor, Sylvester, and Buis learned the true definition on how to "Motley" someone
In the Sunday game, the Dodgers faced the best team in the league record-wise in the Arrows. It was the Dodgers who were looking for a little revenge this time as the Arrows spanked them 6-0 early in the year. Jeff Montfort ended up making that an afterthought. Jeff pitched 6 flawless innings in a rain-shortened game and the Dodgers won 7-0 to post their 11th win of the year.
Again, it was a home run that did most of the damage for the blue crue. And again, it was Dustin Waalkens who delivered the big blow. Leading 1-0 in the top of the 4th inning, Dustin strolled to the plate with bases loaded and only 1 out. He took a 1-2 pitch from ace Eric Teal over the right field wall for a grand salami. The blast put the Dodgers up 5-0. The next inning the Arrows threatened with runners on second and third with one out. But Dodger ace Jeff Montfort struck out the next two batters to end the inning.
The game had a playoff feel, and if these two teams happen to meet in the championship game, there will surely be fireworks. The Tommy goes to the big dog Dustin Waalkens for his clutch Granny. Montfort receives honorable mention for his performance. The Dodger's road to the playoffs doesnt get much easier as they face the Braves, Hurricanes, and Rockies to end the year. Next game: Braves @ Roncalli HS 7/25/08 at 7:00pm
Five Dodgers Selected to All Star Team
Quintet Leads National Division In Friday's Exhibition
The Dodgers placed five players on the National Division All Star team. The game will be played this Friday, 7/11/08 at Decatur Central High School. The players are Shortstop Drew Sylvester, Catcher Al Ready, Pitcher Jeff Montfort, DH Kurt Brabender, and Left Fielder Dan Taylor. Infielder Tommy Daeger most certainly would have made the team had he not been on his honeymoon this week. The five will take on the American Division All Stars to determine home field advantage for the championship game later this summer. Home Run Derby starts at 6pm with the game immediately following. Congratulations to all five players!
Dodgers "Waalk" Off!
Timely Home Run Lifts Blue Past Pesky Trojans
On a day where both teams had trouble getting guys to show up, Dustin Waalkens showed up just in time for the Dodgers. The right fielder cracked his second home run of the year in the bottom of the ninth to propel the Dodgers over a very tough Trojans team, 3-2. The Dodgers improve to 9-3 on the year. The victory was very important as the Dodgers lead up to a very difficult portion of their schedule. They must face the Astros, Arrows, Braves, and Hurricanes in the last month of the season.
Waalkens' blast came at a good time because the Dodgers had trouble with the bats all day against lefty Mike Dury. A first inning homer by Dan Taylor, and a run scored on a past ball by Jimmy Crews were the only scoring done by the blue all day. Mark Buis was great again in keeping the Dodgers in the game. He pitched 7 solid innings allowing only one run on 5 hits. His effort definitely saved the game for the Dodgers. What Mark doesn't want you to know about happened late in the game. Hitting in the 9 hole, Buis had a chance to leg out a ground ball to the shortstop. In an unprecedented move, Buis slid FEET FIRST into the first base! You might ask yourself, "Was the throw high?", or, "Did the first baseman come off of the bag?", or "Is this Mark guy retarded?" The answer to all of these questions would be, no. Mark apparently was sick the day in tee ball when they taught us to never slide into first base, let alone feet first. It was the highest of high comedy! Congratulations Mark! Enjoy your Cheesesteak!
Dustin Waalkens was the unanimous choice for the Tommy Lasorda player of the week award. Not so much for his on field heroics, but more for the birth of his first son, Carter Dale Waalkens. Renna finally gave birth after extra innings in her pregnancy. The entire Dodgers organization would like to congratulate Dustin and Renna and welcome another slugger to the team!
Dodgers Pound Astros
Early Hit Parade Makes For Easy Win
The Astros entered Sunday's game feeling pretty confident about playing the Dodgers. They ousted them in last year's playoffs. After the game, they had a completely different feeling...sore backsides. The Dodgers pummelled the Astros to the tune of 13-0 in only 8 innings.
The Dodgers were eager to get back at the Stros for last year's season ending loss, and they wasted no time. They put up 5 runs against the Astro's top pitcher and chased him out of the game after only 2/3 of an inning. The relief pitching had no answer either as a steady barrage of seeds and frozen ropes were laced all over Roncalli Stadium. Here were some of the stat lines: Kurt Brabender (2-4, 3 Runs 1 RBI); Miguel Silva (2-4 1 Run, 1 RBI); Dan Taylor (2-4, 3 runs); Dustin Waalkens (2-4 1 Run, 2 RBI's); Drew Sylvester (2-5, 3 Runs, 3 RBI's, 2 Doubles); Al Ready (2-5, 1 Run, 2 RBI's)
Jeff Montfort threw a gem on the mound striking out 8 Astros and only giving up 4 hits. No Astro made it past 2nd base the entire game. Jeff extends his strikeout total to 60, good enough for best in the league. Jeff is the first Dodger to receive the Tommy Lasorda Player of the Week Award twice in the season. The Dodgers move to 8-3 on the year and will take on the Rockies on 7/6 at Roncalli.
Blue Beat Stallions For First Time
Taylor's Blast Helps Blue Get Over Hump
The Dodgers can no longer say that they have never beaten the Stallions. The Stallions have won every meeting between these two clubs including many close games and come from behind wins. Perhaps the most damaging was a come from behind win in the 2006 MABL Championship game. Friday night at Roncalli, however, the Dodgers exorcized most of those demons as they beat the Stallions 10-8 in a thriller. With both teams a little undermanned, it was survival of the fittest and the Blue had just enough punch at the end to pull out the victory.
The Dodgers started off in typical fashion falling behind 3-0 in the first couple of innings. But a strong 4th inning triggered by the bottom of the order helped tie the game at 3. Drew Sylvester had an outstanding day tallying three hits and one ridiculous double play turn at second base. He was the catalyst for the Blue all night. Later in the game with the Dodgers clinging to a one run lead, left fielder Dan Taylor came up with the bases loaded with two outs. He took an 0-2 curveball from reliever Bruce Stanley over the right field wall for his first home run of the year. The Salami opened up a 5 run cushion and it seemed as though the Blue would walk to the finish line. However in the bottom of the inning, Stallion Jason Jaffe delivered his own Grand Slam to pull the Stallions within one. They would eventually tie the game in the bottom of the 7th inning. In the top of the 8th, centerfielder Damon Grothe smacked a double to right center to set up Taylor again. After a wild pitch, Grothe advanced to third and Taylor drove him in with a sacrifice fly. The Dodgers added another insurance run, and Matt Tibbs closed the door in the eighth and ninth to get the win.
Taylor finished with 6 RBI's on the day to earn him the Tommy.
On Sunday, the rematch proved to be just as tight. Both teams got off to a slow start because of the long weekend and the scoring didnt start until the 4th. Once again, the Stallions got off to a 3-0 lead, but the Dodgers rallied back to tie the score behind hits by Drew Sylvester and Dustin Waalkens. Then, the Dodgers took a 1 run lead thanks to Kurt Brabender and a double by Sylvester. The Stallions proved to be too much however, as they tied the score promptly and then took the lead for good in the top of the 8th. The 7-5 loss brings the Dodger's record to 7-3 on the year and lands them firmly in second place in the National Division.
Next week, the Dodgers face a tough Astros team who ousted them from the tournament last year. Game time is at 3:30 at Roncalli.
Dodgers Split Sunday DH
Blue lose to tough Braves Team in 9th
Rain was a big part of part of last weekend's games for the Dodgers. Not only did rain stop a game between the Dodgers and Orioles for the second consecutive week, the Braves rained on the Dodgers' parade by handing them their second loss of the year. With the Dodgers out to an early 7-1 lead, most people at Decatur Central thought it would be a win for the Blue team. No one told the Braves that, as they fought back within one run in the 7th inning, and then won it in the bottom of the 9th for a final score of 8-7. The loss overshadowed a terrific performance from Mark Buis on the mound, who went 6 innings and only allowed one earned run. The Dodger's offense got stagnant in the second half of the game however and failed to put the Braves away. The Braves, with a slightly revamped team, proved that they are a team to be reckoned with, and will contend come playoff time.
From Decatur Central to Manual High School, the site of the night cap of the double header, the Dodgers had time to regroup. The Blue put it on the Orioles from the get-go. The score was 11-0 before rains once again washed the game out. But, 6 innings had been complete, so it was an official game and the Dodgers came away with the win. It was a classic team game as most everyone got at least a hit. Jeff Montfort was stellar once again on the mound. The Dodgers have a huge weekend with a double header against the Stallions next week. Game times are Friday at 7pm, and Sunday at 3:30pm. Both at Roncalli High School
Dodgers Pound Orioles
First Baseman Leads Blue To 5th Victory Of The Year
The Dodgers barely escaped the torrential downpours of last weekend as they completed all nine innings in their Friday twilight bout against the Orioles. Unfortunately for the Orioles, they weren't able to escape the Dodger's thunderous bats and outstanding pitching. The Blue were able to pound the Orioles 14-2 to move to 5-1 on the year.
The weather was the story early, as a huge front moved right over the field at Manual. Both benches seemed more intent on looking out for tornados rather than looking out for foul balls. The front passed by with nary a raindrop and they were able to get back to baseball. Leading the charge for the Dodgers was pitcher Jeff Montfort, who recorded a season high 16 strike outs and only allowed 1 run on 5 hits. For the season, Jeff has tallied 44 strike outs, which is 11 more than the nearest competitor. The fans have stopped coming to the game when Jeff pitches because there just isn't enough action.
The Dodger's bats were strong once again as they pounded out 16 hits and 12 RBI's. Noteworthy performances include Tom Daeger (3-5, 2 runs, 1 RBI) and Al Ready (3-5, 4 runs, 2 RBI). Also chipping in were Dan Taylor and Damon Grothe with 4 "Nancy-Boy" hits between them. The duo's 4 hits measured out to about 245 feet total as none of the Texas Leaguers cleared the infielder's glove by more than inches.
The Tommy Lasorda player of the game goes to Matt Bush. The first baseman drove in 4 crucial runs and had 5 quality at bats. He was only 1-3 on the day but had two walks, a Sac Fly, and the four ribbies. Matt was focused a little more than usual, probably he and Kiera have a new pre-game ritual. Congrats Matt!
Daeger Powers Dodgers To Win
Star Shortstop Overcomes Flu-like Symptoms In Win
Tommy Daeger wasn't certain whether he would be able to perform at 100% on Sunday. Seeing as he wasn't 100% sure he could walk the previous night. Daeger spent Saturday night battling the flu and resisting the urge to vomit many times. Then he went 4-5 with 3 RBI's, and 3 stolen bases in the 11-2 win against the Rockies. Not bad for the bachelor.
The Dodgers got a lot of help from some timely hitting and from some errant pitching to score in double digits for the 3rd time in 5 games. Helping Daeger lead the charger were Drew Sylvester (2-3, Sac Fly, Double, 2 RBI's), Matt Bush (2-5, Double, RBI), and Al Ready (1-3, 2 RBI Double). Add 10 walks and 2 Hit By Pitches to that, and the runs were easy to come by.
On the mound, the Blue got terrific efforts from Mark Buis (2-0, 7 K's, 5 IP) and Jeff Montfort (4 IP, 4 K's, 0 ER). The Dodger hurlers struck out the side twice. Buis cooled off a little bit at the plate, going 0-3, but had 2 productive at bats. It didn't help that he had swings like the one in the photograph.
The day belonged to Daeger though, and he takes home the "Tommy" by a unanimous vote. Four victories, and four different winners for the LaSorda Player of the Week Award. Daeger said later that he dedicated the performance to all 15 of his buddies that nursed him through his sickness the night before. The Philly Cheesesteak award goes to Mark Buis for his gravity induced 1-3 put out in the 5 inning. Buis fielded his position beautifully today, earning the nickname "Black Hole".
The Dodgers take on the Orioles in a Friday/Sunday Double Header next weekend.
Dodgers Split Double Header
Great Win Against Canes Leaves Blue Feeling Good
The Dodgers came into the weekend looking to double its win total for the 2008 campaign. 18 innings later, the Dodgers came out with a 3-1 record and a smooch of their sis. The Blue Team won a hard fought game against the Hurricanes, but couldn't keep momentum as they fell to the Arrows in the night cap.
The first game was a match between two old rivals in the MABL. The game featured two of the best arms in the league and two of the best lineups in the league as well. Big Game John Hensley held the Dodgers at bay for most of the game, but a late rally lifted the Blue to a 7-5 victory after the lead changed hands several times. The Dodgers struck in the first inning with a run as Damon Grothe blasted a double to start things for the Dodgers. Kurt Brabender knocked him in with one of his three hits on the day. Brabender was not done however as he drove in two more runs, including a crucial game-tying RBI in the bottom of the 7th inning. For the go-ahead tally, the Dodgers used the team approach. Matt Bush led off the 8th inning with a double in the gap. Al Ready slapped a ground ball to the right side. And Drew Sylvester promptly knocked him in with a sacrifice fly. Other notables on the day include Dan Taylor, who was 3-4 with 2 steaks, Dustin Waalkens, with 3 solid innings pitched and a tape-measure bomb, and Mark Buis who dusted off his cup and played third base and had two hits on the day. The Tommy goes to Kurt Brabender however, because of his timely hitting and 3 crucial RBI's with two outs.
In the nightcap, the Dodgers were served a reality check. The Arrows came in put the clamps on a tired and undermanned team. However, being "manned" and fresh probably wouldnt have changed the outcome as the Dodgers fell 6-1. The Arrows got great pitching from two of their studs to hold the Blue to only 2 hits. Mark Buis continued his bid for hitting cleanup by smacking a double, and Matt Tibbs pitched well enough to win. However, the bats just weren't there for him.
The Dodgers will take Memorial weekend off and then take on the Rockies the first weekend of June.
Dodgers Move To 2-0 With Win Against The Cubs
Dodgers Collect 17 Hits And Turn Triple Play On an overcast, slightly chilly day, the Dodger's bats were sizzling hot. 7 innings and 17 hits later, the Dodgers had dispatched of the Cubs by a score of 15-1. Most of the damage was done early, as the entire lineup collected at least one hit on the day. They pushed across 3 runs in the first inning, and that was all pitcher, Mark "The Bus" Buis nee ded for the victory. Buis only allowed 1 hit in three innings of work, striking out 1 and only allowing one unearned run. Manager Damon Grothe used his bullpen wisely today giving Jeff Montfort and Matt Tibbs some work in the game as well. Buis, seeing some time at the dish, also drove in 3 runs for the Blue. And one hilarious demonstration of how to leg out an extra base and slide with the game well in hand. The Dodgers got plenty of offensive pop for the second game in a row. Leading the charge were Miguel Silva, Dan Taylor, and Jimmy Crews each collecting 3 hits on the day. The trio had 5 RBI and 5 runs scored between them. Matt Bush and Drew Sylvester each had 2 hits for the second consecutive game. But the accolades aren't reserved solely for the hitters. In the last inning, with runners on first and second and nobody out, Dustin Waalkens snared a line drive for one out, threw to first to double off one runner and with the runner on second rounding third, Brabender tagged second base for the first Triple Play in Dodger franchise history. With many candidates to choose from, this week's Lasorda Player Of The Week Award goes to #4 Jimmy Crews. Crews went 3-3 on the day with two walks to earn the "Tommy". He also scored 2 runs for the Blue. Manager Damon Grothe had this to say about his star third baseman. "I have seen Jimmy hit like that for years and years. It really is a matter of time before he has a game like this and you can't get him out. Although, in his last at bat, I was unsure if he had ever seen a curveball before...I mean ever. Did you see those swings? He looked like a dick wit ears!" This week's Jeremy Honaker Philly Cheesesteak award goes to Kurt Brabender once again. Way to purposefully swing at ball four and accidentally hit it two feet in front of the plate. Then look at the catcher, look at the ball, then look at the catcher again and finally take off for first base. Keep up the good work Kurt! Montfort Impressive In Opener Dodgers Start Hot Behind Pitcher's 14 K's And Lively Bats Jeff Montfort felt it was time for a change. He switched jerseys from #1 to #7 for the 2008 campaign. Turns out, change is good for the lefthander. Montfort struck out nine of the first ten batters he faced to start the season for the Dodgers. He finished with 14 K's and no runs allowed in just 6 innings as the Dodgers went on to beat the newly formed Trojans, 19-2. The rest of the Dodgers came to play as well totalling 17 hits and 19 runs against the youngsters from Chatard. Going against the career ERA leader from Notre Dame, the Dodgers started out with a bang. Damon Grothe began the assault with a laser down the left field line. Left fielder Dan Taylor promptly drove him in with a double in the right center gap. The real fireworks started in the 5th inning though, as Dodger rookie Ryan Noward went Yack-O off of Trojan relief for his first hit as a Dodger. The 2-run shot busted the game wide open. Not to be outdone, first baseman Matt Bus h hit a 3-run tater to right center to highlight an 8-run eigth inning that sealed the deal for the blue team. Kurt Brabender also put on a clinic at the plate today. Brabender, who extended his hitting streak to one, went 3-5 with a double, triple, and three runs scored. Miguel Silva and Drew Sylvester each had 2 hits on the day as well. But the story of the day was Montfort. Montfort needed only a fastball and a hook to keep the Trojan hitters at bay. When asked about his performance, Montfort remarked, "I think the most important thing today was I was able to get my curveball over for strikes. That, and I was able to get my sliding shorts to fit me right before the game. I can always tell what kind of a day it is going to be by the way my spandex feels. I had a lot of confidence out there knowing that my guys were putting up crooked numbers and I wasn't going to get chaffed." Montfort is the first recipient of the Lasorda Player Of The Week Award. Jeff will take home the "Tommy" and put it next to his little league trophies and his one home run ball from summer ball of '94. See who takes home the "Tommy" next week as the Dodgers take on the Cubs (4/27) at Manual H.S. at 3:30p,m. Also, in honor of our surrogate teamate, Jeremy Honaker, we also have the first ever "Philly Cheese Steak Award" for funniest comment / blunder of the day. Today's winner was no doubt Kurt Brabender for his comment before the first batter of the year. Due to FCC regulations, we will just limit the quote to, "Let's go Miguel". I gotta feeling Mr. Brabender and Mr. Buis will be swapping the Cheese Steak for most of the year. |
