HYBC Player Gerut Shines in Big Leagues HYBC Player Gerut Shines in Big Leagues by Tim Frakes Lot’s of HYBC kids have big league dreams, but so far only one has actually seen those dreams come true. Meet San Diego Padres outfielder and former HYBC Little League player Jody Gerut (pronounced GAIR-it). Jody Gerut was born on the Caribbean Island of St. Thomas. His family moved to the Lombard area where he played for HYBC from 1982 - 1989. “I played at Highland, Butterfied, York Center and Glen Park,” Gerut recalled in an email interview arranged especially for HYBC through the San Diego Padres public relations office. While in HYBC Gerut played for the Expos, Brewers and Angels. “I remember playing at Highland. I could not see the pitches once the sun dropped near the horizon” Gerut recalled. According to MLB.com, Joseph Diego Gerut attended Willowbrook High School, where he played basketball, baseball and soccer. Later, he attended Stanford University, where he lettered in each of his three seasons for the Cardinals from 1996-98. Education is important to Jody Gerut. In 1999 he earned a degree in history at Stanford, which included a paper on Soviet patent laws. Jody Gerut made his major league debut with the Cleveland Indians in 2003. He played parts of two seasons with the tribe and was traded to the Chicago Cubs where he played in only five games. After a season with the Pittsburg Pirates, Gerut made his way to San Diego where he seems to have found a home. When asked what went through his mind the first time he played major league baseball here in Chicago, Gerut quipped, “How soon can I get to Portillos?” Gerut has seen some success with the Padres. On a recent road trip to Wrigley field Gerut hit a home run to right field off of Cubs ace Carlos Zambrano (the Cubs won anyway). When asked what advice he has for HYBC Little Leaguers today, Gerut says, “Have fun and play hard!” For more on Jody Gerut, go to: http://sandiego.padres.mlb.com/team/player_career.jsp?player_id=425506 |
