Forty five minutes of regulation play was not enough. Neither was 10 minutes of sudden death overtime. It took a shootout with each team posting 30 shooters to decide this match with Williamstown taking it by a goal.
Both teams played a fast paced game and produced plenty of scoring chances, but Lancer netminder Mike Saraullo and Williamstown goalie Aaron Connell stood on their heads in net. The Lancers out shot Williamstown 37 to 27 in regulation, but found itself trailing by one late in the third until Steve Petitte scored with 11 seconds left in regulation to knot the score at 2 each.
After much discussion and a phone call to the league president, the tiebreaker format was determined and the game continued with 5 minutes of 5 on 5 sudden death play. Again, goaltending ruled and neither team could get one past. Sudden death continued with 5 minutes of 4 on 4 play but still, despite some excellent scoring chances by both squads, no score. Another phone call prompted a 5 player shootout format. Both goalies responded by stopping all but one goal each. This continued for 6 sets with each team on its third time through the roster. To add to the suspense, Mike had worn the ice in his crease down to the concrete, so both goalies had to both work out of the Williamstown net. The final Williamstown shooter scored to take the set and match. The 8:20p start finally ended about 11:00p. Check out the Album link for plenty of photos.
Thank you to all the players for a great season. There were some ups and downs, but you were always a pleasure to watch.
The JV squad still has two games left, both at Voorhees Skate Zone: 2/17, 7:00p vs. RV and 2/24, 7:45p vs. Cherry Hill East. Get out and support our future varsity players.
