COLUMN: BASE BALL TO DAY, POLO GROUNDS On a hot summer day in a crowded New York City subway car, Jack Norworth saw an advertisement, a placard on the wall, announcing today's game at the Polo Grounds. It was 1908, there wasn't even radio then, and as reminders most people relied upon such posted signs. The heat, game, or girl; for some reason Jack was inspired to write a song about baseball, and the words did not stop nor did that subway car until he finished lyrics scribbled on three small pieces of paper, which are still preserved and performed today 100 years after he penned the lines to, "Take Me Out to the Ball Game." Norworth had never seen a baseball game, nor did he until 1942 in Brooklyn. But, his 1908 rendition resulted in a classic, and ushered in a golden age of baseball songs. To those lyrics, music was arranged by Albert von Tilzer, copyrighted in 1908, and the sheet music was sold across America through the York Music Company of New York. In honor of the 100th anniversary of this baseball anthem, the U.S. Postal Service this month issued a commemorative stamp entitled, "Take Me Out to the Ball Game." The stamp became available at local post offices this week. There is only one basic image in blocks of 4 or 10 and pane of 20 stamps (see attachment). Note: The player shown in the 2008 stamp is not wearing a glove, which is not exactly accurate for 1908. The image chosen by the USPS is from an 1880 trading card. This summer at certain home games of the Seattle Mariners, Saint Louis Cardinals, and Minnesota Twins; the fans won't be able to, "Buy me some peanuts and crackerjack," within peanut-free zones. Some fans are allergic to the legume. In Shakespeare's London, circa 1600, promoters used hand bills, placards, and flags atop theaters to announce daily performances. The Globe and other theaters were open air with audiences in tiered stands surrounding the stage and groundlings on an interior infield. Performances could be held only in good weather during daytime, which was similar to baseball in the early 1900's. This month, Fame Forum featured an article based upon the 1949 movie, "Take Me Out to the Ball Game," which starred Esther Williams, Gene Kelly, and Frank Sinatra; and was produced by Arthur Freed, and directed by Busby Berkeley. NWB HALL OF FAME PROGRAMS The National Women's Baseball Hall of Fame, an independent not-for-profit organization established September 1998, is situated in suburban Washington, DC. The objective is to recognize achievements of women in regulation baseball. The NWB Hall of Fame offers these programs for participants in regulation baseball with organized leagues. Managers are are encouraged to recommend recognition awards and suggest articles on their teams, players, or events. Applications are available through email and are posted on the website. NWB HALL OF FAME INDUCTIONS Nominations for the NWB Hall of Fame are due September 30. Inductions may include four current and one previous players by formal application or candidate statement. NATIONAL MVP AND MANAGER AWARDS MVP player and manager award requests are due December 31. Season nominations should be by a manager or administrator.
