Danville Cougars: Welcome
Danville Tear Through the WeekendThe Danville Cougars continued their stellar play through this past weekend, sweeping league foes Catawba Valley and Pulaski. The wins put the Cougars CVCL record at 15-5, good enough for first place. With just four league games remaining on the Cougar schedule, Danville is in great position to capture the CVCL crown.
Saturday night saw some great baseball, as the Cougars beat the Stars 8-1 and 7-5 on the night. Game one saw D.W. Moore continue to dominate opposing hitters, as the big righty went five innings allowing just one run. Closer Josh Keller then retired six straight Stars to end the game. A number of Cougars had good nights at the plate, including Kiki Castro, Ronnie LaBrie, and Will Southwell.
Game two was a great contest, as the Cougars clawed from behind to win 8-6 in extra innings. The Stars jumped out to an early lead, touching up Cougar starter Nick Bowers for four runs in four innings. The Stars then added one more off reliever Bryan Meyers. Down 5-2 in the top of the sixth inning, the Cougar bats came alive. Captain Kiki Castro hit a towering solo homer to bring the Cougars within two leading into the seventh. In the top of the seventh Ronnie LaBrie got things started by being hit by the pitch. Wes Francis then bunted for a single, putting runners on second and third. Stars pitcher Boo Morrow then hit Kevin Bowles to load the bases. John LeSuer followed with a single into right field to make the score 5-4. Phillip Porter then drove in the tying run to push the game into extra innings.
In the top of the eighth, LeSuer again proved to be the hero, lacing a two run double into the right field corner that put the Cougars ahead for good. Meyers got the win in relief of Bowers.
Sunday saw the Cougars slaughter the Pulaski Pirates 12-0 and 10-0. Multiple Cougars had multiple hits, and took advantage of plenty of Pulaski errors.
Danville now faces the toughest part of the summer, going to Wilson to play the Wilson Tobs on Thursday before playing the Fayetteville Swampdogs on Friday night. Both teams are among the best teams in the nation.
