Southside Soccer Club is still in existance and has a new board.  Juergen Fochler is no longer president of the club and has become involved with another club-FC Southside United.  The two clubs are not affiliated in any way.  Please dont get confused by the names.  Southside Soccer Club is alive and well and will be playing this fall.  Registration forms will be out soon.

Questions??  Contact Coach Saunders.

UNC player
UNC men's team will play a soccer match against the Liberty University Flames in Lynchburg Va on 9/16/08(Tuesday) at 7pm.  This will be on the Liberty University campus and when I went to this match two years ago, there was no admission charge.  You will need to take chairs to sit in.

Passing and Receiving
A good player knows what he wants to do with the ball before he receives it and what he will do if his plan is no longer an option once he receives it.   Watch David Beckham play.  He knows where he wants to receive the ball and where he wants to pass it before he ever touches the ball.    HE THINKS AHEAD, STAYS COOL AND UNDER CONTROL AND ANTICIPATES!!!!!

Congratulations and good work guys.

This is the best representation for district honors the DRHS soccer teams have ever received and I believe it is a statement that soccer is here at DRHS and the quality of our play is getting better each season.   Most of these kids are products of Southside Soccer Club and Danville Blast.  They have received good training from good coaches there and it is also a testament to their commitment to become great players.

These are individual honors!!!!  They do not translate into wins and championships!!!  We cannot get lazy and rest on how well our teammates have done.  We have to continue to work hard.  Soccer is a team sport not an individual sport.  We have to come together and work as a team.

How Do We Become A Better Team????
You all have heard me say this many times-now the message is coming from other coaches too.  If you were at Blast tryouts this past Saturday you heard Cary Wright say this.  The Nelson Co coach said this tonight-if you want to become better players and a better team, you have to play soccer year round.  This is not a game that you just pick up and play.  You get better by repetition of the skills and being in game situations where you have to make decisions.  Va High School League rules state that I cannot be involved in out of season practice.  This does not mean that you cant.  You all need to get together during the off season and play.  You need to play organized soccer somewhere this fall-be it Blast or rec.  I firmly believe this is how you as a team will get out of the bottom and start winning the matches you should be winning.  I as the coach cannot make you better in the short time we have together as a team-I can polish you some and give you some new ideas-each player has to make the commitment to become better by playing this wonderful game all the time.  Why is GWHS so good???  They get together all year and play.  Why is Nelson Co so good?  They get together and play all year long.  This is not only a commitment from the players but from the parents too because you are going to have to be responsible for transportation of your player to where ever the kids decide to get together and play.  One last observation-if you believe none of this then go to Dan Daniels park after work or on the weekends.  See who is playing.  I bet you will see familiar faces.  There are folks of all ages playing soccer and they will let you play too.  Ask Kevin.

A New Individual Goal
How would you like the have your jersey number retired when you graduate???

Here is how you do it.  I will retire your number if you are voted Dogwood Player of the Year by the coaches of the district, make the Virginia All State 1st Team  or become a High School All American-any team.  Pretty tough goal, but I believe hard work can make dreams become reality.

Adidas Wind Suits
Adidas Wind Suits have been ordered for each player on the boys team.  They are not yours to keep and will have to be turned in at the end of the season.  These suits have been ordered for you by Jeff and Robyn Keller in honor of Jeff's mother, Shirley Keller, who passed away recently.  This is a very nice thing the Kellers have done for this team.  I know I don't have to say this, but thank them when you see them.  I give my personal thanks as the coach of this team.  It is a very kind and loving gesture and show of support for this team and
I appreciate it..

Dan River Challenge

The Dan River Challenge is modeled after Anson Dorrance's "Challenge Cauldron" that he uses for the UNC women's team.  It is solely a performance based program that will challenge each player on this team to do his best, become more competitive and become a better player. Some things cannnot be used such as juggling because the skill levels range widely and cannnot be a performance based skill, but still important none the less.    Some of it is based on awarded points for performance and some is based on rankings from play during practice.  We will keep record of all scores during practice games such as 1v1, 2v2 heading, and so on and this will compile rankings in different categories.  Each player will be able to see where he stands after the first practice and thereafter.  Keepers are also evaluated thru this system, as well as defenders, mid-fielders and forwards.  I am very excited about this and hopefully this will make us a better team.   By performing at their peaks at each practice, the starters will emerge thru this challenge model.  I think the players will be very aware of this at first and maybe stressed by it but they should eventually put it in the backs of their minds and simply work hard.

One of our main focuses in this challenge model is winning. Every training session is going to be about winning.  I firmly believe that winning is something we need to learn and focus on.  We can still show good sportsmanship and have fun in the process.   It will create a highly competitive environment at each practice which will force each player to compete at his level best.  Because our focus is to win, whether it be 1v1 or 4v4 games or simply timed running, players who want to slack off or not try as hard will not earn the needed points and their teammates should apply positive peer pressure to make them work harder.

Many thanks to Anson Dorrance for writing his book-Training Soccer Champions-which outlines how to run this challenge program.

Pre-Season Pep Talk

I am very excited about this season.  We are going to do new things in practice and in matches.  We have new jerseys with last names on the back and Dan River Soccer patch on the front-very cool.  We need to isolate ourselves from what I call the negative cloud and lack of school spirit that engulfs DRHS.  WE NEED TO BE THE CATALYST THAT CHANGES THIS!   We need to believe in ourselves in adversity and in good times and not listen to negative comments that we may hear.  Dan River High School Boys Soccer is a family and community.  This includes the players, the families of the players, the supporters who will come see us play, and me.  We must depend on each other, help each other, and support each other and discipline each other.  We must be honest all the time.  At the end of the day, soccer is just a game, and what we take from it is mental and physical discipline, relationships, memories, a love for this game, and most of all--we each are a part of something that I believe is very special.

Parents- support this team and me thru good and bad.  If your son is not playing much, encourage him to work harder-dont blame me or the other teammates because each player is on an equal playing field with the Dan River Challenge.  If he is getting playing time, remind him it can go away if he quits working hard at practice.

Players-work hard-as hard as you ever have-to make this team special.  It is worth it, believe me.  Support and encourage each other-offer words of encouragement when a teammate is down or get him in line if he is slacking off.  At the end of a game, be able to say you gave it 100% all the way thru.  Every one of the 25 players on this team is going to contribute to our success or failure.  Everyone of the players are important to me and this team.  We are not seniors or juniors or sophmores or freshmen any more.  WE are not travel players or rec players or ODP players anymore.  We are not playing against each other anymore.  We are one team-Dan River High School Wildcats Boys Soccer Team and I am very proud to say that!

Why are some teams better than others?
This is a question that is asked a lot in the sports community and has complex answers. Players have to first of all train hard and be in physical and mental shape. Players can possess great individual skills but this does not win a soccer match. Players must play as a team on the field and off the field. Training must be taken seriously even if it is boring. Coaches need to play the best players they have and in the proper positions. A coach is part of the team too. The team must believe it can do well even against overwhelming odds. At the end of the match, the team must reach deep inside to find the needed strength to finish. A team must have the heart to play well and the mental toughness to play well. A team must never give up no matter what. A team must never believe the news press or the fans-a team believes in its self. When things are bad a teams picks its self up and when things are good, they celebrate but always remembers what it can be like if the team is not focused.
MOST OF ALL---It takes heart, desire, dedication, mental and physical strength and confidence to be a winner. Losing must hurt and winning is a time for celebration.
It is up to each player on this team-do we continue the past or do we start a new future?????? If you don't hate losing then how will you ever learn to win?
