How Do We Become A Better Team????
You all have heard me say this many times-now the message is coming from other coaches too. If you were at Blast tryouts this past Saturday you heard Cary Wright say this. The Nelson Co coach said this tonight-if you want to become better players and a better team, you have to play soccer year round. This is not a game that you just pick up and play. You get better by repetition of the skills and being in game situations where you have to make decisions. Va High School League rules state that I cannot be involved in out of season practice. This does not mean that you cant. You all need to get together during the off season and play. You need to play organized soccer somewhere this fall-be it Blast or rec. I firmly believe this is how you as a team will get out of the bottom and start winning the matches you should be winning. I as the coach cannot make you better in the short time we have together as a team-I can polish you some and give you some new ideas-each player has to make the commitment to become better by playing this wonderful game all the time. Why is GWHS so good??? They get together all year and play. Why is Nelson Co so good? They get together and play all year long. This is not only a commitment from the players but from the parents too because you are going to have to be responsible for transportation of your player to where ever the kids decide to get together and play. One last observation-if you believe none of this then go to Dan Daniels park after work or on the weekends. See who is playing. I bet you will see familiar faces. There are folks of all ages playing soccer and they will let you play too. Ask Kevin.

Danville Blast Tryouts
Danville Blast has announced tryouts for the 2008 season. All tryouts will be at Dan Daniels Park. You have to attend at least one session to be considered for a Blast team but attending as many as you can shows you desire and commitment and gets you maximum time in front of the evaluators. Don't worry about the cost of being on a travel team right now. I encourage you all to tryout. Playing travel soccer will make you a better player if you make the team and will in turn improve DRHS soccer. The tryouts for ages 14 and over are as follows and there is no cost to tryout. If you have questions see me.
Saturday, 5/17/08 2:00pm-3:30pm
Sunday, 5/18/08 5:00pm-6:00pm

A New Individual Goal
How would you like the have your jersey number retired when you graduate???
Here is how you do it. I will retire your number if you are voted Dogwood Player of the Year by the coaches of the district, make the Virginia All State 1st Team or become a High School All American-any team. Pretty tough goal, but I believe hard work can make dreams become reality.

Adidas Wind Suits
Adidas Wind Suits have been ordered for each player on the boys team. They are not yours to keep and will have to be turned in at the end of the season. These suits have been ordered for you by Jeff and Robyn Keller in honor of Jeff's mother, Shirley Keller, who passed away recently. This is a very nice thing the Kellers have done for this team. I know I don't have to say this, but thank them when you see them. I give my personal thanks as the coach of this team. It is a very kind and loving gesture and show of support for this team and
I appreciate it..

Dan River Challenge
The Dan River Challenge is modeled after Anson Dorrance's "Challenge Cauldron" that he uses for the UNC women's team. It is solely a performance based program that will challenge each player on this team to do his best, become more competitive and become a better player. Some things cannnot be used such as juggling because the skill levels range widely and cannnot be a performance based skill, but still important none the less. Some of it is based on awarded points for performance and some is based on rankings from play during practice. We will keep record of all scores during practice games such as 1v1, 2v2 heading, and so on and this will compile rankings in different categories. Each player will be able to see where he stands after the first practice and thereafter. Keepers are also evaluated thru this system, as well as defenders, mid-fielders and forwards. I am very excited about this and hopefully this will make us a better team. By performing at their peaks at each practice, the starters will emerge thru this challenge model. I think the players will be very aware of this at first and maybe stressed by it but they should eventually put it in the backs of their minds and simply work hard.
One of our main focuses in this challenge model is winning. Every training session is going to be about winning. I firmly believe that winning is something we need to learn and focus on. We can still show good sportsmanship and have fun in the process. It will create a highly competitive environment at each practice which will force each player to compete at his level best. Because our focus is to win, whether it be 1v1 or 4v4 games or simply timed running, players who want to slack off or not try as hard will not earn the needed points and their teammates should apply positive peer pressure to make them work harder.
Many thanks to Anson Dorrance for writing his book-Training Soccer Champions-which outlines how to run this challenge program.
