Two and out
Justin Chimento was called on to pitch the Hawks out of a second and third, no out, go ahead run on third situation in the fourth inning. Chimento got the first batter he faced to line out to second, induced the three batter in the lineup to ground out to third and struck out the cleanup hitter to end the inning, preserving the Hawks 3-2 lead over Saddle brook in Sunday's playoff elimination game. A sudden thunder storm interupted the Hawks momentum causing an hour and a half delay before play was to resume. The Hawks took advantage of Saddle Brook pitcher Mike Cramer's loss of control and turned two base on balls and an RBI base hit by Anthony Genchi into an insurance run. Genchi a pitcher by trade volunteered to take on the catching duties for the Hawks while two of their regular catchers were vacationing and another had a prior catching commitment. The rain delay took its toll on Chimento's control as well as he labored to get through the fifth inning allowing four runs and turning a 7-4 lead over to the Rebels. The Hawks went quietly in the top of the sixth and Mike Vinciquerra was called on to pitch the sixth on short rest. Vinciquerra was touched for 3 more runs, two earned in the bottom of the inning putting the Hawks at an 9-4 disadvantage. Cramer came out to pitch the top of the seventh for Saddle Brook and retired the Hawks in order two by strikeouts to end the game and Clifton's season. The Hawks finished the regular season at 14-10-1.

The Hawks biggest scoring opportunity came in the sixth inning when a one out bases loaded situation resulted in a 1-2-3 double play to end the inning. The Hawks take on the Saddle Brook Rebels today in a do or die contest at KBG Field in River Edge. First pitch is set for 2:00 PM.

The Old-Fashioned Batter

George E. Phair

How dear to my heart was the old-fashioned batter, who scattered line drives from the spring to the fall.

He did not resemble the up-to-date batter, who swings from the heels and misses the ball.

The up-to-date batter I'm not very strong for; He shatters the ozone with all of his might.

And that is the reason I hanker and long for --Those who doubled to left, and tripled to right.

The old-fashioned batter,

The eagle-eyed batter,

The thinking-mans batter,

Who tripled to right.
