Age Cutoff Change for 2006
The USSSA Baseball National Committee has met and discussed the numerous communications with coaches, parents, league directors and tournament directors regarding the proposed age cutoff change by USA Baseball.

After serious consideration USSSA Baseball will change from a August 1 cutoff date to a May 1 cutoff date to take effect for the 2006 season. The 2006 season will start on August 1, 2005. This means whatever age a player is on April 30, 2006, will be their age for the 2006 season. USSSA allows all players to play "up" in a higher age bracket.

USSSA is also in the process of looking at pitching distances in regards to the age change. A change in pitching distance is likely for the 2006 season. It is the belief of USSSA Baseball that these changes will enhance the opportunities for all players to play the game of baseball in a fun and exciting atmoshpere.

USSSA encourages all national organizations to follow our lead.

Congratulations Tides on being the Magnolia State Classic II Tournament Champions. We had a fantastic Sunday after such a horrible Saturday. After losing our Saturday game the Tides came Sunday searching for victory. We started off with an early morning win against the Gulf Coast Cougars followed by a mid-day win over the Louisiana Sharks. Which was a tough game for the most part because their fans came to support that team. The Tides had a little something to say about that though with a 10-5 victory. That win put us in the Championship game against the Southern Havoc who had beat us in our only game Saturday. We started that game and finished strong with a 9-1 to win the tournament. Every player played a very important role in all three games Sunday. The Tides found their bats which we all knew they had and put up 31 runs on 38 hits for the tournament. Some of the leaders at the plate for this weekend were:

Seth Watson:       750 avg. for tournament
Reese Richmond:    613 avg. for tournament
Michael Williston: 545 avg. for tournament
Patrick McMahon:   500 avg. for tournament
Travis Butler:    500 avg. for tournament
Aaron Green:       400 avg. for tournament

Our pitchers were great. Kyle Morrison and Aaron Green pulled most of the load but it also took Seth Watson and Patrick MaMahon to help pitch us through the Championship game.

Congratulations Biloxi Tides, my heart is FULL!!

Rain Delay
The Biloxi Tides open the weekend tournament with the first game Saturday morning that turned out to be Saturday afternoon because of a long rain delay. The Tides open the weekend with a heart breaking loss to the Belle Chase Cardinals 2-1. They bounced back strong by winning a thriller against the Lakeview Vikings 4-3 in the bottom of the 4th. Nine teams in the tournament and the Tides seeded 6th out of pool play. The came out very strong against the #3 seeded Riptide team and ripped them apart for an 8-1 victory that pushed them into the semi-final game against the Louisiana Baseball Academy. The Tides lost that game 0-3 to finish 3rd in the Baseball Summer Splash. There were nine teams in this tournament seven of which were from Louisiana. The Tides were the highest finishing team from Mississippi.

ODE TO BASEBALL:
The day is bright, the sky is blue,
and the grass is green and covered with dew.
Excitement and tension surround the day,
as the players take the field to play.
The ball is thrown, the bat is swung,
and the game has now begun.
A pitch to the batter, a hit to centerfield,
a throw to home, and the opponents yield.
The crowd stands and cheers as the Tides win the game;
all is right with the world because baseball reigns

#14 Retired !!!!
The Biloxi Tides have the first number retired in their program. Number "14" was retired on June 1, 2004. 14 was worn by Zach Mayhew for the first season of Biloxi Tides baseball. In that time Zach led the Tides in many aspects of the the game but most importantly he led by hard work, attitude, and respect for the game. He always gave his best and worked the hardest everytime he was on the field for the Tides. He has left a legacy for future Biloxi Tides to live up to. Always work hard to be the best. Have a GREAT attitude and respect for the game of baseball.

WHO DO YOU PLAY FOR?
Who do you play for? I mean really. Why do you play baseball? When you are out there in a game, why are you there? Who are you playing for?

Do you play for your parents? Are they going to love you more if you get a home run? Are they going to leave you more in their will if you win a game? I don’t think so. Mom and Dad will always love you…even if you never get a home run. And I seriously doubt your inheritance will grow if you win a game.

Don’t play for your parents.

Do you play for friends? Are you trying to impress them? Will they think you are cool if you do well? Will you suddenly become more popular than a movie star if you get that out at first base? Probably not. Let’s face it…how many of those people do you see hanging around the ballpark anyway? And so what if they find out how great you are and actually do think you are cool? If they love you only because you are a good ball player, they are not worth having as friends.

Don’t play for friends.

Do you play for your teammates? Perhaps you could impress them? Maybe you don’t want to let them down. You don’t want them to laugh at you or make fun of you. Is that why you play? You can catch every ball and hit like a rocket, and they love you. Next game you can’t hit the broad side of a barn and nobody even talks to you. Teammates can be incredible, but teammates can let you down.

Don’t play for your teammates.

Do you play for your coach? Want to win one for him? After all he has worked hard and he deserves it…right? You want to impress him too don’t you? Now, don’t get me wrong. The coach loves what he does or he wouldn’t be there. Remember…they don’t get paid for doing this! However, will the coach remember that fantastic play you made at home plate in five years? Will he remember your batting average when he is old and gray? Probably not.

Don’t play for your coach.

So, who do you play for? The fans…that’s right…the fans! You want to look good for the fans.   Forget them. Fans only love you when you are winning.

Don’t play for the fans.

Who do you play for?

Play for YOU.

If you are playing for these other folks, you are playing for the wrong reasons. Play because you love the game. Play because you enjoy the challenge. Play because the crack of the bat is music to your ears.   Play because you love the feel of the rubber under your feet as you pitch. Play because some of those friendships you develop will make you a better person. Play because hitting a homerun can motivate you for weeks. Play because catching a fly ball is one of the most incredible feelings in the world. Play because your favorite outfit is your uniform. Play because your glove is your favorite accessory. Play because a dirty uniform and mud on your face is a badge of honor. Play because “safe” is one of the most beautiful words you know.    Play because your catcher’s gear simply feels “right”. Play because winning is fun. Play because you actually can learn from losing. Play because the first out of the game makes your heart beat faster.

Play because the dugout feels like home.

Play because you LOVE the game! Play because it makes YOU happy.

Play for you and you will never have a bad game.
Play for you and you will always do your best.
Play your best and you can always be proud of your accomplishments.

Make memories, do your best. Play for YOU!
