Tim Harvell and I started the Bandys Wrestling team in October of 1995. None of the Team members on that team had never wrestled before. That first year (1995-96) we had two wrestlers to be one match from being state qualifiers (Shawn Sigmon and Sean Page). Shawn Sigmon was a first year senior and was conference champion with a 28-6 record.
Three years later the team placed 7th in the 1A/2A individual state tournament. From that point until Bandys did not place lower than 5th (2001)in the Individual State Tournament.
Bandys won three Individual State Tournament Championships (2004, 2005 and 2006), two State Dual Team Championships (2005 and 2006) and were Individual State Tournament Runners-up in 1999 and 2000.
From 1999 to 2006 ten Bandys wrestlers won fifteen state individual championships. Four of these wrestlers (Sean, Daren, Byron and William) won multiple All-American honors. Two of these young men won National Championships (Daren, Ohio Tournament of Champions 2003 and Byron, Ohio Tournament of Champions 2004 and NHSCA National Open 2004 and 2005). Two also were named by the National Wrestling Hall of Fame as the annual Dave Shultz Award winner for the state's best wrestler (Sean 2000 and Byron 2006)

The most accomplished Bandys wrestler to compete in college is Daren Burns. Daren was a Southern Conference Champion and the Freshman of the Year in 2004. During his sophomore season (2005) Daren won the Southern Scuffle and again was a Southern Conference Champion. He was one match from making All-American at the NCAA National Tournament. That summer Daren placed 3rd in freestyle at the Pan American Games in Guatemala. During his junor season in 2006 Daren battled shoulder injuries the whole year, but he won his third Southern Conference Championship. Daren had surgery to both of his shoulders the following spring and red shirted during the 2007 season while recovering from his surgeries. In April of 2007 Daren's first competition back on the mat was the University Freestyle Nationals in Acron, Ohio. At this tournament he defeated and placed ahead of several NCAA All-American where he was the University Nationals Runner-Up. Daren will compete as a red shirt senior this year for UNC Greensboro.

*** The Green Mile ***
The best team ever to step on the mat for Bandys was the 2005 Individual and State Duals Championship Team. Although the team featured some great wrestlers, it was not a great team in November and December of 2004. During January the whole team started coming together and the team members were able to see that with everyone pulling together this team could accomplish great things. The news media started touting the middle of the line up as the "Green Mile" because it was so hard for other teams to compete with the Bandys seven state qualifers from 125lbs to 160lbs. By the season's end the Green Mile expanded to eight after sohomore Ryan White placed fourth at 103lb in the State Tournament.
This team won the 2005 State Duals by defeating Croatan 41-15. The next week Bandys won the very tough Midwest Regional by 45 points over arch rival West Lincoln. One week later Bandys won the 1A/2A Individual State Tournament setting the 1A/2A state record for points scored (168.5) This was more points than the combined scores of State Runner-Up West Lincoln (92) and 3rd Place finisher Brevard (76). All eight of Bandys State Qualifiers were either State Champions or State Place winners!
The term "Green Mile" was first used by the late John Grindel, Newton's Observer News reporter in 2000, when his son Josh was a team member and a Bandys State 4th Place winner. That was in reference to the movie The Green Mile. Bandys had a good dual team that year with a solid line up in the middle. Bandys had another very good "Green Mile" in 2006, but I will always remember the 2005 "Green Mile" as the best dual team ever from Bandys and the best Bandys team I have had the pleasure to coach!
