History Of SCAA
SCAA's "Field of Dreams" dates back before the formation of the City of Chesapeake. As early as 1960, boys from this area were playing baseball in the Babe Ruth League, which included teams from adjoining cities - Norfolk, South Norfolk and Portsmouth.
In 1961, under the leadership of Howard Laumann, Great Bridge Little League Baseball was organized. Mr. Laumann served as president for six years in this league, which consisted of eight teams - four major and four minor.
In 1971, the league expanded and became Great Bridge Baseball under PONY league rules. During the 1970's, the number of boys participating was approximately 350, and the registration was $4 per child. There were six T-ball, eight Mustang, seven Bronco, three Pony and two Colt teams.
In 1998, the league name changed from Great Bridge Baseball to Southern Chesapeake Athletic Association. This change came about for several reasons, one being the addition of girls fast pitch softball division. Since our goal is to serve both boys and girls, playing baseball and softball, we wanted to have a league name that was representative of the organization. In addition, our organization had always drawn from the school zone that attended Great Bridge High School. With the opening of Hickory High School, we now draw students from both schools and felt the need to have a name that was neutral and representative of both schools. For this reason the colors that the league uses during All-Star competition have changed from green and gold to red, white and blue.
