Blue-Grey Cup Gettysburg 5/24-25-08

Congratulations on great performance over the weekend, The weekend also showed when we play as a team and put the effort and commitment in we are capable of competing with any body.

During the Saturday Rovers played 3 prelimary cames, which would determine which division they play in the knock out stages of the tournament and  where they are seeded within their group.

  • The first game was Saturday morning against Cecil Wildcats who we were later to meet in the final on Sunday. It was early morning start, and it showed with half the team still a sleep at kick off. The first 10 minutes hardly managed to get the ball out of their own half, but we managed to survive. As the game went on we started to get back into the game, and had a number of chances to win, with David having the best chance after going round two players and the goalkeeper coming towards him, he attempted to lob the ball over the advancing keeper, only to see it just float over the bar. The game finished 0-0 which was good result as the Wildcats were a very good team and and year older then us.

  • Our next game was against Rapmapo Valley. This was almost the opposite to the first game, we started very strong creating a number of clear cut chance. The best was the great effort from the edge of the area by Ricardo which crashed against inside of the bar and bounce down on the line. But as the game went on Rapmapo got more into the game and could have scored near the end but for a great save by Elton to keep the scores at 0-0

  • Our final group game was against Center United who were again a year older and who eventually went on to win the Division One Championship. The game started in the worst possible manner with Center United scoring after just 30 seconds. They continued to dominate the game for the next 10 minutes adding a second goal before half time. After the break and being 2-0 down the team started to but passes together and started to cause Center United a few problems. Even though we lost the game 2-0 we probably played our best game so far.

  • Following 3 morning games, all the teams were seeded into two groups, even though we didn’t win any of our group games, we finished up being seeded 1st in Division 2 due to goal difference. Which meant we had to play Miffin Co. Crew from New York in the afternoon. One change to Rovers squad was the surprise inclusion of Sergio, who decided it was more painful watching then playing with a damaged knee...

  • Again we started strong and scored our first goal of the weekend, with some good passing between Ricardo, Kevin and Michael which resulted in Michael finishing the move off with a nice goal. After the goal Rovers did their normal thing and decided to take a nap, which allowed Miffing County back into the game and resulted in them scoring just before half time after a mix up in the Rovers defense. After a few encouraging words at half time from the coach :) , Reston game out firing and scored two very good goals from Kevin and a typical 30 yard goal from Sergio. Miffing County scored a late goal, but Rovers held on to move in to the semi finals with a deserved 3-2 win.

  • In semi finals we met Rapmapo Valley, even though Rovers had more of the possession and created the better chance we were unable to break down a strong Rapmapo defense. This resulted in the teams going into overtime. In overtime each team had to remove 3 players including the goalkeeper and play 7-7. The overtime session was only about two old when Rovers were awarded a free kick just inside Rapmapo half. Sergio step up and power the free kick in to the top corner of the Rapmapo net, to give Rovers the win and allow them to advance to the final.

  • The final was against Cecil Wildcats, who we draw 0-0 in the group stages. The game was very tight throughout, both sides gave little away, with the defense and especially Jason Webster playing a great game. At the end of full time, with both teams very tired we went into our second over time game 7 on 7 again. Unfortunately on this occasion we conceded the early goal to give the Wildcats the championship.

It was a great effort by every player in the team, with every player contributing to success of the weekend. Special thanks to Eric Belt and Alex Sharbaf, our guest players who both gave 100% every game to the team and helped in the weekend success.
