PITTSFORD SWIMMERS HELP SECTION 5 TAKE FIRST PLACE AT STATE MEET
The Pittsford Boys Swimming and Diving team turned in the third best performance of any public high school competing at the state meet, helping to power Section 5 to the top ranking at the New York Public High School Championships at the Nassau County Aquatic Center on March 1.
Among the highlights for Pittsford was having all three relay teams qualify for finals. The 200 medley relay of Andrew Maier, Sean McManus, Dan Locke and John Lyman finished ninth with a time of 1:39.96. The 200 free relay of Andrew Kuter, Dan Locke, Kenny Pink and Nate French claimed fourth place with 1:28.53. Kuter, Locke, Pink and French were also fourth in the 400 free relay, with an impressive time of 3:15.32.
In individual events, Nate French was sixth in the 200 free (1:43.99). He turned in an automatic All America time of 4:35.89 in the 500 free to claim fourth place overall. French was also a finalist for the scholar-athlete award at the meet.
Kenny Pink tied for sixth place in the 100 breast (1:00.04) and Sean McManus was 10th (1:01.19). Pink was 15th in the 200 IM (1:59.85) and Kuter was 15th in the 100 free (48.73).
In the preliminaries, Kuter was 22nd in the 50 free, Brandon McManus was 26th in the 500 free and Sean McManus placed 35th in the 200 IM. The 20 fastest swimmers in each event returned for finals, with the top 10 in the final heat and next ten swimming in a consolation heat but still scoring points for their team.
Head Coach Mark Morris, who brought nine swimmers to Long Island, called it “a very competitive meet.” He noted that Pittsford accounted for nearly a third of the points scored by Section 5 (183 of the 579.5), and that among public high schools, the Panthers finished just three points behind second place Long Beach.
Also key to the Section 5 victory was the performance of Irondequoit’s Ricky Henahan, who was responsible for one of three new state records. Henahan went 48.90 in the 100 back, beating the record of 49.93 he set at last year’s state meet. He also took first place in the 100 fly (49.76).
The state meet marked the conclusion of another strong year for Pittsford swimming and diving. The Panthers won their sixth straight Section 5 crown and fifth straight Monroe County championship. The Panthers have won 61 straight dual meets, one of the longest winning streaks in Section 5.

STATE MEET D&C ARTICLE
Henahan takes 2 events at state swim meet
Staff report
(March 2, 2008) — The only high school swimmer in New York State who can complete the 100-yard backstroke faster than Ricky Henahan is ... well, Ricky Henahan.
The Irondequoit senior won two events and broke his own state record in the backstroke to lead the Section V team to the state title at the New York State Public High School Championships Saturday at the Nassau County Aquatic Center in East Meadow.
Section V won the meet with 579.5 points. Section II was second with 520 and Section VI was third with 405.5.
Henahan, who was named swimmer of the meet, won the backstroke in 48.90 seconds, eclipsing his old mark of 49.93 set while winning in 2007.
"I was surprised," Henahan said. "I knew I went fast, but not that fast. So I was really surprised when I saw a 48 on the board."
He also took the 100 butterfly in a personal-best time of 49.76 seconds.
Henahan, who has signed a national letter of intent with the University of Tennessee, has one more stop to make before heading to the Volunteer State — the U.S. Olympic Trials at the end of June in Omaha.
"It was definitely an emotional meet for me," Henahan said. "It's my last meet as a Section V swimmer, and for the past three years, we haven't won states, so it was a great feeling to do it again."
Pittsford senior Nathan French was the top finisher in two events for Section V, placing sixth in the 200 freestyle (1:43.99) and fourth in the 500 freestyle (4:35.89). Greece Athena's Cory Zorsch was fourth in the 50 freestyle (:21.60). Six-time sectional winner Eric Austin of Naples was fourth in diving (432.70) as three Section V divers finished in the top 10.

Irondequoit's Henahan wins Swimmer of the Meet, 10th career title
(February 17, 2008) — Ricky Henahan may need to add another wing to his already crowded trophy room.
The Irondequoit senior won two events, set a meet record and won Swimmer of the Meet as he finished his Section V career with 10 individual titles at the Class A championships Saturday at Webster Aquatic Center.
Pittsford's Nathan French also was a double-winner as he led his team to its sixth team title.
"I'm going to miss the competition; it has been a great ride coming to this meet every year," said Henahan, who won six Class B titles in his first three years swimming varsity and four Class A titles the past two years.
Henahan won the 200-yard individual medley in 1 minute, 54.33 seconds and the 100 freestyle in 46.48. Both times earned him All-America status and the 100 freestyle was a meet record.
"I wanted to go 1:55 in the IM, so I was pretty happy," Henahan said. "Normally, I wouldn't do the IM, but this year I started developing it more and doing some different training."
Henahan, who holds the state record in the 100 backstroke, will swim the backstroke and the 100 butterfly at the state meet in two weeks at the Nassau County Aquatic Center. Henahan is the two-time defending state backstroke champion.
"I think if you do it (100 backstroke) too much then it kind of gets harder," Henahan said. "I just wanted to try something different at this event and then get ready to go hard at states."
French, a senior, placed first in the 200 freestyle (1:42.92), the 500 freestyle (4:38.82) and was also part of the winning 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams.
"I was hoping to go a little faster in the 500, but I am thrilled with the time in the 200," French said. "It was also nice to win the relays as a senior as well."
Pittsford finished with 464 points to win the team title, ahead of Fairport (395) and Webster (314.5).
"I think this is one of the best teams we have had since I have been here," French said. "We work harder than everyone else in the pool, and I think it pays off. We have great coaches and just awesome support for the program."
Teammate Andrew Kuter won the 50 freestyle and finished third in the 100 freestyle.
"I was pretty pleased with the 50, but I would have liked to go a little faster," Kuter said. "It was a fun meet, but we are already looking forward to the state meet; we still have unfinished business to take care of."
Kenny Pink also was a winner for the Panthers, winning the 100 breaststroke.
Fairport seniors Peter Koenig and Dylan Sheemaker each won an individual event and were part of the 200-medley relay team. Koenig won the 100 backstroke and Sheemaker won the 100 butterfly.
"Winning the medley was very special for us," Koenig said. "When we had our dual meet with Pittsford, they beat us badly, so that was a big win for us."

Panther swimmers aim for another title

Pittsford, N.Y. -
The names and faces change, but the results always seem the same.
For the Pittsford boys swimming team, success is front and center. This year, as the past five years, should be more of the same.
The Panthers aim for their sixth straight Section 5 championship Saturday at the Webster Aquatic Center.
Pittsford finished undefeated in dual meets this season (12-0), running their dual meet winning streak to 61 meets.
“As a team, we just keep getting better,” said Andrew Kuter, a senior. “No matter what the competition is, we work hard. We are always pushing each other. We will be ready for sectionals and the rest of the postseason.”
Pittsford could have entered this week’s Section 5 championship as the favorite on reputation alone, but this year’s performances more than speak volumes about the team’s talent.
The Panthers opened the season by taking first in eight of the 10 events at the Lockport Sprint Invitational on Dec. 1. Two weeks later, Pittsford dominated the Owego Invitational taking first by 70 points.
The Panthers then went on to capture eight of 12 first place spots at the Fab 4 Invitational on Jan. 12.
“It’s a lot of fun to be part of this team, it is something no one takes for granted,” said senior Nate French. “We all work really hard everyday. Everything we have accomplished is great because their are a lot of good people in this program.”
The Panthers should have several first place finishers at Sectionals.
French enters Saturday’s meet as the defending champion in the 500 free. He also finished second in the 200 freestyle to Penfield’s Jonathan Jones last year.
Kuter is the defending champion in the 100 free, while Ken Pink won the 200 individual medley.
“We are always trying to stay consistent,” Pink said. “Our goals remain the same. We always want to swim our best, and be competitive in every race.”
Sean McManus is a prime example of the success of the program.
McManus took third in the 100 breaststroke at the and was part of the winning 400 free relay team at last year’s Section 5 championship. He continued to improve and became one of the lead swimmers in the area this past season.
McManus was a key part of all three relay teams this season and emerged as the top swimmer in the 100 butterfly. He finished third in the event at last year’s sectional meet.
“This is one of our strongest teams, I hope we can get everybody to score,” McManus said. “It’s great to be part of the legacy that previous teams have built. We know that we can keep that tradition going.”
McManus, like many other swimmers has intentions of keeping the strong performances going long after sectionals has ended.
The Panthers are hoping to not only have individual state champions, but win the team state title also. Pittsford ended last year on top of the state rankings.

Section V swim powers Fairport, Pittsford meet Tuesday
(January 4, 2008) — Pittsford has come out on top the last four years in head-to-head boys swimming meets against Fairport.
With another strong lineup, Pittsford is favored to win again when the two teams meet at Mendon at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday.
"I never use the words clear-cut with a Fairport-Pittsford meet," Pittsford coach Mike Morris said. "I have that much respect for Fairport.
"We will go with our top lineup. They are one of the top teams in the state."
Look for some of Section V's top swimmers in the races they excel best in as neither coach will experiment much with their lineups.
"We want our kids to compete against the best and see where they are," Fairport coach Mike Kennedy said. "You see what Pittsford has done and you applaud that.
"We're trying to get back there. It's healthy for a team to set that kind of standard."
Pittsford is a five-time defending Section V Class A team champion. The team is again so strong that three of its relays swam qualifying times for the state meet with eight individuals at the Owego Invitational on Dec. 15.
Monroe-Woodbury of Section II, which was No. 2 in last year's final state ranking and had almost its entire lineup back from last season, finished 70 points behind Pittsford.
Four seniors led the way for Pittsford then, and could provide an ample number of points against Fairport.
Nathan French is the reigning 500-yard freestyle state champion and also was part of Pittsford's winning 200 freestyle relay. Andrew Kuter scored in three events at the 2007 state championships.
Ken Pink qualified for four events and Sean McManus three at states. Pittsford, which defeated Brighton on Thursday, 1-6-74,, is off to a 5-0 start (2-0 league) this season.
Pittsford juniors Dan Locke and Andrew Maier helped the team's 200 medley relay swim a state qualifying time of 1:40.71 at Owego.
Fairport (5-0, 1-0) is led by senior captains Peter Koenig and Dylan Scheemaker with senior Jim Beaudry, who is strong in freestyle events. Koenig owns Section V's second-fastest and the state's fourth-best time in the 100 backstroke.
