INTRODUCTION:
Welcome to Patriot Wrestling for the 2006-2007
season. You have the privilege and responsibility
of building upon a tradition of excellence. Last years season was the most
successful in PHS history. This happened
for one reason. IT WAS EARNED! Everything
else must be earned as well. Seniors How do you want to go out?
You lead from the front not behind.
In the past years many Patriots have gone on to win
County, Sectional, & Section V titles.
Many Penfield Athletes have also gone on to place in the New York State
Championships. This success will be continued upon and expanded through your
commitment and dedication to our program.
The following pages of this program guide will provide you and you
parent’s valuable information in helping you to perform to the best of your
abilities. Note specifically the “Wheel
of Success” and our programs mission statement. Keep it near to you at all times and
refer to it frequently!
PROGRAM GUIDELINES:
A. ELIGIBILITY: You must; 1.
have parental consent,
2. have a current physical
on file with the nurse, 3. be
of good academic standing as per school district policy, 4. be
of good social standing within district and community.
B. GENERAL CONDUCT: The Penfield wrestler must remember that he and his
actions are representative not only of himself, but the entire program and
every other individual involved. Any
deviation from high standards of general conduct will necessitate disciplinary action (ie. Match or team suspension). The standards apply to the community, school
and athletic program in general. Any
athletes suspected of using illegal substances and/or performance-enhancing
substances will be disciplined as per the Athletic Department and District
policy.
C. TRAINING RULES: Note and
understand the new CODE OF CONDUCT.
The use of alcohol, tobacco, or non prescription drugs will NOT be
tolerated. Sleep and proper diet (see
information within this guide) are critical to maximal performance in sport and
living a healthy
life style in general. It is important
that you get regular hours of sleep. In
general the athlete should retire by 10:00 on weekdays or school nights and
11:00 p.m. on non-school
nights.
D. TEAM FUNCTIONS: Each season
there will be a number of activities in which team members are expected to
participate. They include such things as
clinics, off season tournaments, banquets, kids wrestling, fund raising,
etc. These activities are an important
part of the program.
E. EQUIPMENT: Gear checked out for practices and/or competition is
to be used only for those activities.
All equipment must be turned in at the end of the season. Issued Penfield gear will be worn at
competitions and on award stands. No
hats allowed on award stands. Athletes/Parents not turning in issued equipment
will be billed accordingly.
F. FACILITIES: It is every
athlete’s responsibility to keep all athletic facilities (home and away) as
neat and clean as possible. Do not spit
or throw trash on the floor. Return all
equipment to its place after use. Do
your part in maintaining the wrestling area, locker room, and hallways.
G. PRACTICE REGULATIONS: It is your
responsibility to know the practice schedule and be on time. If you are unable to attend you must notify
the coach in advance and if at all possible in person (bring a teacher pass). A master schedule of all practice times and
scheduled events will be given out in pre-season to both parents and athletes
as to allow for
scheduling of other events around team events. This is done to prevent conflicts.
H. PRACTICE EXPECTATIONS: Effort,
self-control, attentiveness, and willingness to accept coaching. WE PRACTICE ON HOLIDAYS AND ATTENDANCE IS
MANDATORY. Set schedule now to avoid
conflict. Make sure injuries are
reported to the coaching staff and trainer.
All injured wrestlers are expected to attend all practices and meets.
I. TEAM SELECTION: The process is
based upon both competitive and participation objectives.
1. Pre-Season Rankings: Wrestlers will
be seeded and drawn into a bracket by the coaching staff. If needed final ranking matches in each
weight class will be the best two out of three matches. The coaching staff will determine if this
process is needed.
2. Wrestle off weight: Both wrestlers
need to be within reasonable weight to be eligible for wrestle-off. Coaching staff will determine this per weight
classes.
3. Overtimes: These will be
done according to NYSPHSAA officials’ rules.
4. Important coaches
rights: The coaching staff reserves the right to
change or amend the team selection process.
The staff also reserves the right
to pull an individual from the line up in spite of wrestle off results.
Reasons for doing so would include such things as ineffectiveness, lack
of effort, or discipline.
J. VARSITY LETTER POLICY:
1. Wrestlers must finish the season as a team member in
good standing to be awarded a varsity letter.
2. Wrestlers must win at least two varsity matches.
3. The coaching staff reserves the right to award extra
points to wrestlers for outstanding contributions to the program.
4. Seniors will receive special consideration.
K. WEIGHT MANAGEMENT: No athlete in the Penfield Wrestling program
will be allowed to “cut” weight.
This is an old term used which brings a negative light to our
sport. Athletes will “manage” their
weight according to the certification process, which is administered by the
state, school doctor, trainer and nurse.
To better your ability and perform at your maximum levels some athletes
may have to manage their weight down or some may have to gain weight. Either of these will be done with proper
nutrition and diet. See nutritional information within this
guide.
L. SHOWERING: All athletes must shower at the conclusion of each practice and
competition. This is proper hygiene as
well as helping to avoid any skin problems that can arise from poor
hygiene. The mat will be cleaned
everyday.
M. BULLYING/HAZZING/lANGUAGE: Any
behavior involving either of the mentioned items will not be tolerated. We are all different but
must respect each other because we are all Patriots. A first incident will require a meeting with
the coaching staff and parents. A second
incident will result
in dismissal from the team. FOUL
LANGUAGE WILL NOT BE TOLERATED.
YOU START WITH A DREAM……………………
Read closely the next few pages of the young men that have come before you. You must
realize that tradition brings about Expectation only and will not guarantee
personal victory! You must continue to
exhibit the values of SACRIFICE, DISCIPLINE, HARD
WORK, COURAGE, WILL, DESIRE, AND
More
importantly you must exhibit these values at times when adversity hits. One of the best things about athletics is
that they force young people to deal with adversity, and this is what builds
character. With great character and
hustle, even
the most average of boys can accomplish great things!
Make it a goal of yours to join
those that have come before you or even exceed their accomplishments as
Penfield Wrestling strives for excellence.

MATCH EXPECTATIONS FOR A
PENFIELD WRESTLER
1.
Proper warm up both mentally and physically at the
appropriate time. Not too early or too late. Physical
warm up should include some sprinting and hard drilling. You must break a sweat and increase heart
rate.
2.
Run to the center of the mat.
3.
Wrestle hard, hard, hard.
Force your style on the opponent.
This is earned through hard work and sacrifice in training. Always know the score, time and your position
in the match.
4.
When out of bounds run back to the center of the mat.
5.
Wrestle with emotion as well as intensity.
6.
Score points, points, points. If winning by 5 try to win by 10, if winning
by 10 try to win by tech. Or fall. When
you get a man on his back; pin him. Do
not let anyone off the hook. Try to take
people from their feet to their back.
7.
When you wrestle well, whether the margin of victory is
large or small, show some excitement.
You earned it.
8.
Do not take winning or losing for granted. You can learn a lot from both.
9.
Never get pinned. Find a way off your back. It’s all determination. To come off your back and win is one of the
greatest feats in wrestling.
10.
Run off the mat win or lose.
11.
Shake coaches hand win or lose.
12.
Be ready to accept encouragement and criticism.
13.
Start preparing immediately for your next competition or
practice.
