As an outfielder, a player must take pride in being the team ís last line of defense. There are many responsibilities unique to the outfield position. Following is a short checklist of the skills needed by outfielders. Besides evaluating their players performance of these skills, coaches should give practice time to help outfielders work on and improve them.
Good foot speed
Overhand throws
Quick release of the ball after a
catch
Strong accurate throws
Backing up infield and outfield plays
Drop
step and angle back to the ball
Ability to dive for balls
Catching fly
balls
Fielding ground balls: down and block the ball and charging the ball.
Because an outfielder may go several pitches without getting a ball, the position is a mentally demanding one. An outfielder must be mentally tough and focus on every batter. The player should anticipate each play and know how to answer the question, "If the ball comes to me, what am I going to do with it?"
Drills for Outfielders.
1. Outfielders should have a coach, parent or friend hit lots of fly balls for them to catch. This helps develop excellent judgment.
2. When practicing taking ground balls, outfielders should practice two techniques -- both the down and block technique, and charging the ball. The down and block is used primarily when there are no runners on base. Charging the ball keeps runners from taking extra bases or scoring.
3. To practice diving for the ball, outfielders can pair off and stand no more than 10 feet apart. They then take turns tossing each other five balls to the left, right, and short in front. (Players may also want to use a mat to cushion the dive).
4. To practice taking the proper angle to the ball and cutting off gappers, outfielders can again pair off and take turns throwing a ball over each other ís right shoulder. The fielder should drop step, turn, and run and follow the ball with the eyes only. Have them repeat this drill by throwing the ball over the left shoulder.
Good teams know the importance of having a solid outfield. Players should take pride in the position and practice the necessary skills.
