The Bob Bailey Memorial Cup - A Dedication to Bob Bailey from Kevin Kittrick, Head Coach-Rocky River Buccaneers

Bob Bailey was a wonderful, well-liked man who had a soft spot for his family and a passion for sports.  He was born in Kenora, Ontario on May 29, 1931.  Bob met his wife, Jean, in October 1952 while playing hockey for the Cleveland Barons. They were married on June 11, 1955 at St. Angela’s Church in Fairview Park.  They settled in Bay Village for 6 years followed by a move to North Olmsted where they lived for 27 years.  Bob and Jean retired in 1987 and moved to Florida.  When Bob became ill, he and Jean moved back home to be with their three children, other family members and friends.  Bob Bailey died peacefully on October 24, 2003.

Bob played professional hockey for 21 seasons, from 1947 to1968. Bob’s time in the NHL (1953-1958) was during the Original Six era when he played for the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Detroit Red Wings, and the Chicago Blackhawks. He also played for many other AHL and IHL teams. After almost 19 years of tough, grinding hockey, Bob had his best offensive season.  He was 34 years old at this time and scored 132 points for the Dayton Gems in the IHL in 1965-66. Bob retired from hockey in 1968 and was inducted to the Dayton Gems Hall of Fame on March 17, 1970.

I met Bob in the late 1970s. We played on Cleveland men’s league hockey teams together. No matter what team we were on, he always wore his Cleveland Barons socks and pants. I remember his big grin and whole-hearted greeting, “Hey Kev”. Bob always made others look great. We just had to get open, and the puck would be on our sticks. Even in his 50’s, he could score from anywhere, and no one could take the puck away from him. He was a great teammate.

Just as it was an honor to know and play hockey with Bob Bailey, it is an honor to win this trophy. Congratulations to this year’s winner of the Bob Bailey Memorial Cup, Randy Hrabak and the Medina Bees.

The Buckeye Cup Will Be Back In Cleveland for 2008!

The Buckeye Cup High School Club Hockey State Championship is back in Cleveland this year and will be hosted by the North Coast High School Hockey League. The event will be held from March 7-9, 2008, at Ice Land USA in Strongsville, Ohio. Competing will be the top four high school club hockey teams from the North Coast High School Hockey League, the Greater Columbus High School Club Hockey League, and the Cincinnati Amateur Hockey Association.

This will be the Fourth Annual Buckeye Cup. The Buckeye Cup was started by John Mummert, head coach of North Royalton, based on the idea that high school club hockey teams should be able to participate in a state championship beyond their individual league championship on a local level. From its institution, teams from Cleveland, Columbus, and Cincinnati have participated. The First Annual Buckeye Cup was held in the Cleveland/Northeast Ohio area at Center Ice in North Canton, Ohio and at Alice Noble in Wooster, Ohio. Subsequent years were in Columbus and Cincinnati, respectively. And here we are...back in Cleveland.

Good luck to the teams in Cleveland/Northeast Ohio, Columbus, and Cincinnati with the remainder of your season! We'll see the top 12 high school club hockey teams up here in Cleveland in March!

Coaches vs. Pro Alumni Game--A Sight To See

The coaches vs. pro alumni game held this past weekend was truly a success. The coaches gave it their all, and the score was...let's just say...hmm, 8(?) to 4 in favor of the Alumni. Regardless, it was a great event to watch, and there are no injuries to report! (Well, at least no one admitted to hurting! Ha ha!) Kudos to all who participated in the game! Thank you for contributing to the day's success!

Getting Ready for the 2007-2008 Season

The North Coast High School Hockey League is getting ready for another exciting season!

We will have 11 teams participating in the 2007-2008 season playing a ten-game league schedule. Ten of those teams are from last season. Nordonia elected to go independent, and Archbishop Hoban was accepted into the league. Welcome, Archbishop Hoban!

The season should be another interesting one to watch, and the excitement will intensify at season's end with the league's decision to play a double-elimination format in the NCHSHL Playoffs beginning February 3, 2008, at Ice Land USA. It will be interesting to see the twists that might evolve!

NCHSHL will continue its new tradition of an All Star Game to be held on Sunday, February 24, 2008, at Ice Land USA.

In addition, it is NCHSHL's turn to host the Buckeye Cup 2008 where the top four teams from Cleveland, Columbus, and Cincinnati will compete for the Buckeye Cup High School Club Hockey State Championship. Plans are for this to also be held at Ice Land USA in Strongsville, Ohio.

The league schedule has been posted under "Schedules". Please remember to check often as schedules are subject to change.

Best wishes to all teams in preparing for your upcoming season!

All Star Game...A Great Thing To Watch
The NCHSHL's first annual All Star Game turned out to be a great event for all--from the spectators to the players. The "Home" and "Away" teams consisted of two players from every league team--awesome to watch the fun rivalry between the two teams, especially when opposing players from the same league team met up with each other on the ice! With this being kept as a minimal-checking game, the skills of every player shined even more!

Each player left with a memento and lots of fun memories. Our league award winners were also presented with their plaques provided by the Cleveland Hockey Booster Club.

With the current consensus, it looks like this will become a league tradition for years to come. It truly is a great way for all league teams to come together with all rivalries forgotten.

Again, congratulations to all players that participated, and thank you to the coaches and parents who helped at the game. It was very evident that these players appreciated your involvement!

LEAGUE CHAMPS: ROCKY RIVER...Playoff Update - Summary as of Playoff Completion
Sunday's games continued in "Playoff Mode" where every last effort was given by all teams involved!

Mooney Ursuline won against Nordonia in the Consolation #2 Game. Both teams played with all they had and should be proud of their determination!

The Championship Game kept the fans in suspense play-by-play and period-by-period! Medina took the initial lead scoring a goal in the first period...BLINK...Rocky River scores one and then two goals before the first period ends...BLINK...Near the end of the second period Medina scores...A minute and a half later, Medina scores again, completing the second period as 3-2 with Medina leading...BLINK...Rocky River scores one goal two and a half minutes into the third...then yet another goal by Rocky River just 29 seconds later...Despite Medina's strong effort, Rocky River held their lead, resulting in Rocky River earning the league championship trophy, The Jock Callander Cup!

CONGRATULATIONS TO ROCKY RIVER!!!

Summing up the whole season including the playoffs, it is important to recognize the improvement shown by all teams in the league. More importantly, not one team ever gave up their determination to give the season its best! Many have said this has been the most exciting and most intriguing season the league has seen, and parity is becoming more evident within the league. All teams are to be commended on their performance!

Looking forward to the 2007-2008 season!!!

League Playoff Schedule
Another league season ends, and what a league season it has been! It normally takes the season until at least midway before it becomes really interesting, but 2006-2007 proved to be intriguing from the first two weeks on. In the blink of an eye, the league season standings would change. Finish one week and check the standings the next week, and you would find a totally different order in the standings. Check on Saturday, go back Sunday, and well, you shouldn't have blinked because it changed again.

Congratulations to Riverside! They have placed first after 10 league games and will receive automatic berth in the 2007 Buckeye Cup being held in Cincinnati. The remaining teams will vie for second thru fourth places in order to qualify for the remaining three spots for the Buckeye Cup. League playoff points will accumulate onto season totals and help earn those spots. Good luck to all teams!

The playoff schedule can be found on the "Schedules" page of this website, but here are times for the quarter finals being held on Friday, February 9, 2007, @ Ice Land USA in Strongsville. Winners of the quarter finals proceed to the semi-finals on Saturday. Saturday will also be teams #9 vs. #11; the winner will then play #10 on Sunday.

    Q1: 5:45 PM - #1 Riverside vs. #8 Fremont
    Q2: 7:30 PM - #2 Medina vs. #7 North Royalton
    Q3: 8:35 PM - #3 Jackson vs. #6 VASJ
    Q4: 9:15 PM - #4 Rocky River vs. #5 Lakewood

Each team deserves to be commended for each team's accomplishments. All teams have shown improvement from the beginning of the season. Many teams have shown improvement from previous years. Bottom line...every team has something to be proud of!

Best of luck to all teams in our 2006-2007 NCHSHL Playoffs!

And remember...don't blink!

2005 - 2006 Season Proves To Be Interesting And Exciting!
Got to say that this season proved to be another exciting league season! Many would say it was even more unpredictable than last year. Checking on the standings weekly tended to present another "surprise" as we watched teams "battle" over league standing positions, especially in the last few weeks of the season--you never knew how things would stand after another episode...I mean, another week of games.

And, this is truly what our league season should be made of. It can be said that while what place a team held in the standings was important, there really was still a "camaraderie" among all teams, and it showed by all the well wishes expressed from a team to another team throughout the season, even if it meant that the result might knock the well wisher'
