Freshman Farmer Volleyball
I hope everyone likes the sweatshirts-the company accidentally printed the first set on 50/50 sweatshirts so we have some to sell if you are interested. I can sell hoodies and regular sweatshirts for $10 each. There are limited quantities, so if you are interested , please send the money with your player asap. This week was a tough one—Both teams dropped both matches to Flower Mound and Hebron. For the A Team scores, we lost to Flower Mound 17-25, and 9-25. Makayla Roberson again led our offense with 5 kills. The A Team scores against Hebron were 8-25, and 17-25. We had little offense with only 4 kills as a team! We had trouble with receiving their serves, but we will work on that this week in practice. The B Team scores against Flower Mound were 20-25, and 14-25. Katie Loveday led the B team with 6 kills. Stevey Vaughn added 3. Against Hebron, the B team lost a close one 21-25 and 20-25. Kayla Salas and Ashley Miller each had 2 kills. Our district is one of the toughest in the state for volleyball. The schools in our district are rich in volleyball tradition with over 50% of their players having participated in club for at least 2 years. This means their players are a little ahead of us right now. My goal is to work on fundamentals this year, give the players a good foundation and hopefully we can close the gap through off-season. It will not happen quickly, most of the players at the other schools have about two seasons on us right now. Our goal at LHS is to improve and work on our fundamentals so that we can close the gap over the next few years, and as the girls are juniors and seniors, we are competing for a district title. Stay positive, we have come a long way baby!—-Coach Werts

Thinking About Playing Club Volleyball?
I will hand out information next week during study hall about Club Volleyball Parent meetings and tryouts. If your daughter wants to improve her volleyball skills, the only way to do it is to play. Club volleyball offers that opportunity. You may have heard it is expensive, it can be. Each club offers different levels of play, beginning with local, where you practice once a week and play in one tournament a month. The top teams are National teams and they practice at least 2 times a week and play in tournaments multiple times a month and often travel out of state. Most clubs offer payment plans and some offer scholarships. If your daughter wants to tryout, I can help give you guidance. I will hand out information on four local clubs—there are others if you are interested.
Please email me individually if you need some help!

District OpenerKillough North High SchoolWeek Eight, September 28 Both teams lost this week to district rival Marcus. The A team scores were 13-25, 23-25. The team struggled from the serving line the entire night missing 12 serves and earning only 1 ace. Makenzie Buhler and Makayla Roberson led the night with 7 kills each. If we make our serves, the outcome of that match certainly would have been different. The B team scores were 18-25, 15-25. Aubrey Kenney led the B team with 3 kills.
It was a busy week, but I think the girls and parents really had a great homecoming! With no game on Tuesday, we had a long week of practice to get ready for the district opener against Marcus on Friday. The team dinner on Wednesday was fun, the girls were so surprised at the locker room when they arrived at practice on Thursday! Great Job and a Big Thank You to all parents who worked so hard on making it a special place for the girls. As far as the match on Friday, the outcome was not what we had hoped for, but both teams did a good job of being ready to play and not letting homecoming interfere with our plans on Friday night.I picked up the sweatshirts and they were 50/50 instead of 100% cotton as I had requested so they will have to reprint these. I have asked if they want us to sell the 50/50 ones and they will let me know on Monday. Hopefully we will have the new ones by the end of the week!On Tuesday, 9/30, we are playing our matches at the Main campus, participating in the Pink Out-Digging for a Cure night. We will take a bus over to the Main campus, but the girls can ride home with their parents from the Main campus if their parents are there. We will stay for the Varsity match though, so please do not ask to take your daughter home after the freshmen matches.Buy your Pink Out shirt—they are $7 and we have them at North for sale. The girls will play in pink socks on Tuesday to commemorate the event!——-Coach Werts

Lewisville volleyball team gaining steam as district season nears
BY JUSTIN THOMAS, Staff writer
(Created: Saturday, September 20, 2008 1:07 AM CDT)
With just one match remaining before the start of district play, Lewisville’s volleyball team turned in one of its’ better efforts of the season as the Farmers defeated North Mesquite, 25-21, 25-23, 16-25, 25-22 at home.
“It was a great night for us,” Lewisville coach Jay Samide said. “We hustled hard and got to a lot of balls I didn’t think we were going to be able to get to and we won a lot of rallies because of it.”
Lewisville (13-2-2) was led offensively by its’ front line. Paulette Agu had a team-high 16 kills, while Nikki Ijoma had 14. Samide also said that junior Leslie Ekpe did a “great job” in the middle, adding 11 kills.
Samide was also pleased with the way the Farmers passed the ball as junior Ashley Deaver led the team with 38 assists.
“She did a good job of delivering the ball to our hitters in good spots to hit,” Samide said.
He also added that defenders Analise Martinez and Amber Rickman had terrific games playing on the back line.
Lewisville plays at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Wylie before opening district play at 6 p.m. Friday against Marcus at Lewisville.

CONGRATULATIONS LEWISVILLE FRESHMAN FARMERS!!
Coaches Corner:
Tired from the marathon tournament on Saturday, but energized by the tournament results for both teams, I want to take a moment to thank all the family members who weathered the long day and the emotional roller coaster that we traveled together. What an exciting day of volleyball! Both teams performed extremely well, but more importantly the teams competed in some tough situations against some tough opponents and showed tremendous heart. We came from behind some, played from in front some and gained great volleyball experience. I feel confident that this day will be one that we look back on as a pivotal point in our season. If any parents or players have photos from this year so far, please make me a CD or email them when you have time. I would love to share these with the players and maybe put some on our bulletin board in the locker room. If you haven’t been taking pictures, start now to commemorate! The banquet will be here before we know it. This week in study hall, the girls received their Pink Out Donation Form. When we play against Flower Mound next week, it is the Digging for a Cure Match of the season. We hope to Pink Out the stands and raise some money to support breast cancer research. Pink Out shirts will be for sale soon for $7 dollars and we will accept donations at the game as well as the players getting sponsors for our match that night. If your player has not shared this information with you, please ask her. We are counting on your support! That night we will play our match at LHS Main Campus! —Coach Werts
A and B Teams Fare Well in Tourney!lleyball
Volume 7, September 21, 2008
This weekend, both freshmen teams traveled to the Double T Tournament to compete in the tough 20 team tournament. The A and B Teams were in different pools, and at the end of pool play, the B Team ended with a 3rd seed and the A team ended with a 4th seed. The B Team drew a bye for the first round of bracket play, and the A team defeated Irving MacArthur, then met up with our OWN B Team! After a hard fought match with scores of 23-25, 25-22, 25-22, the A team came out on top. This eliminated the B team from the tournament, but no other team competed more closely the remainder of the day. The next opponent was Euless Jr High and the A team won 25-23, 24-26, 30-29. With no rest, at around 7pm the A team played Central and won a tough three game match: 25-19, 10-25, 25-19 making them 3rd place in the tournament! Both teams did a great job representing LHS and took a huge step forward in preparing for district next week!

Lewisville tops DeSoto in non-district match
BY JUSTIN THOMAS, Staff writer
(Created: Tuesday, September 2, 2008 10:42 PM CDT)
After dropping the first game of a non-district match Tuesday against DeSoto Lewisville’s volleyball team needed a spark.
They got it from Hannah Durham. The Farmers scored the first seven points of Game 2 behind the service of Durham, who finished with five aces in the game to lead the Farmers to a 25-8 win in Game 2, and eventually the match. Lewisville went on to top DeSoto, 24-26, 25-8, 25-19, 26-24.
Lewisville’s Leslie Ekpe closed the match with an ace on match-point in Game 4.
“Hannah did a great job with service aces and was a key to starting the run,” said Lewisville coach Jay Samide. “We had eight aces in Game 2 and Leslie closed out the match with an ace.”
Samide added he was pleased with the way the team played, but knows they still have plenty to work on.
“We still need to work on receiving the ball,” Samide said. “And, we need to take control more and take care of the ball.”
The Farmers were led offensively by the passing of Ashley Deaver, who was able to set up her teammates for kill opportunities throughout the night. The beneficiaries of Deaver’s passing were Nikki Ijoma, who led the team with 15 kills on the night, as well as Paulette Agu and Leslie Ekpe, who had 14 and nine kills, respectively.
Saturday, Lewisville completed play in the Jenny Eckert Memorial Tournament in Coppell. The Farmers, who went 0-3 in pool play, went 1-2 in bracket play to finish the tournament.
Lewisville lost their first match Saturday against Rowlett, 25-9, 25-20, but rebounded to win their second match against Denton Guyer, 27-25, 25-16. The Farmers concluded play losing against Mesquite Poteet in a tightly-contested match, 25-17, 23-25, 28-26.
“We got some good experience playing against the teams we did,” Samide said. “I saw some good things and I think it is really going to help us out when district rolls around.”
Lewisville has an off-night Friday and resumes play at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Grand Prairie.

September 14, 2008 Volume 6
We are fast approaching district play—several districts around us started this past week. I wanted to take a minute and remind everyone that when district starts on September 26, we start with a clean slate. All teams start 0-0 on that night and every Tuesday and Friday night we are fighting for a district championship. Second to the championship, as freshmen teams, we are preparing for future seasons as well. Not only are we working on our volleyball skills, but we are also learning strategy and tactics, different offenses and defenses, and working to build self-confidence. While the freshmen season is important now, it is important to focus on the ultimate goal—winning a Varsity District title when these girls leave North and move on to the Main campus. Those are the memories that we are working for every day.
On another note, the sweatshirt order will be turned in on Monday afternoon. If money is an issue this week, please go ahead and order what you want and we will collect at the end of the week, or later if necessary. This is not something mandatory—no player has to have a sweatshirt!!!
I am working on the team dinner for Wednesday night, September 24th. I know that is a church night, but hopefully we can get all players together for dinner before district starts. I will send more detail this week—but we will probably meet at the restaurant at 6pm.
Also I wanted to congratulate our freshmen “Duchess” for homecoming: Makayla Roberson. It is nice to have a Volleyball player on the homecoming court. We were represented well this year in the election. This will make freshmen homecoming even more exciting!
