Tuesday, July 22 UNSIGNED SENIOR GABE ROGERS LANDS HISTORIC SCHOLARSHIP! (click here to watch show)
Every year in every state there's one kid who catches fire in a way that would catch the attention of (ex In Living Color character) Fire Marshall Bill. It all started at the Southwest Invitational Camp (directed by John Lucas), then the GASO in Denton, before providing an encore at the recent George McClellan Invitational. Gabe Rogers 6'2 cg (Klein Forest HS 2008) went from zero to nearly a dozen scholarship offers including after word spread througout the country about this talented unsigned senior - who by the way had a qualifying gpa and ACT score. So why was this kid still on the board so late in the game? Unfortunately, no one ever submitted Rogers transcripts to the Clearinghouse as mandated by the NCAA. Therefore, many college coaches assumed he was a non qualifier. "You can explain (how important the Clearinghouse is) yet they still don't understand," stated Klein Forest assistant coach Lance Alexander. "I got the transcripts sent to the Clearinghouse today, he's good to go". Rogers appeared on "The Basketball Show.com" last week with other members of the Houston Knights summer team (click heading to watch). Less than 48 hours later, Rogers decided to take one of those offers. "I'm going to Northern Arizona", said Rogers. "They will be graduating a lot of people (this year) so by my sophomore year I will be one of the main focal points of the program". This past season, was a key part of the state's deepest and best guard quartet, proven after they advanced to within a game of the 5A state finals. Three of Rogers' teammates at Klein Forest signed letters of intent earlier this season. Toure Murry (Wichita State), Chris Hines (Utah), and Robert Elliot Lloyd (Northern Colorado), marking the first time in Houston history that four senior guards from the same public high school have inked D1 scholarships. "I'm just so proud of Gabe, he's a really good kid who's worked so hard for this". Tuesday, July 22 TMG ENDS RECRUITMENT "SOONER" THAN EXPECTED!

It's all about playing well at the right time. Garland Judkins 6'4 cg (Humble Christian Life 2008) was the flava of the day after putting together one of the finest exhibitions of basketball a guard could muster. In consecutive games at the Great American Shootout in Denton, Texas, Judkins outplayed much heralded guard Nick Russell. Then, a few hours later, he took it right to the Houston Elite including a game winning drive to the basket. It didn't hurt that one of Arizona's coaches were courtside to witness Judkins in rare form while playing for the Texas D1 Ambassadors summer team coached by Max Ivany. "Hey, I've been telling people all along how good of a ball handler Garland was," stated Ivany. After playing at three high schools within the past four years (Angleton HS, Heritage Christian, and Cypress Community Christian), Judkins starred this past season at Christian Life Center located on the outskirts of Houston, where he was a huge part of the team's success. The strong bodied athlete is expected to be included among the Wildcats' 2008 class. Wednesday, July 16 RESULTS: GEORGE MCCLELLAN INVITATIONAL (GMI)

Friday, July 11 RECAP: SOUTHWEST INVITATIONAL CAMP (click here to watch interview / footage)!
Momma, there goes that man again! Former NBA star and head coach John Lucas is the talk of not just the town, but the country after successfully corralling 72 very elite high school hoopers under the same roof for two days of skills and drills. The 2nd Annual Southwest Invitational Camp officially established itself as the place to be (unless you were fortunate enough to get an invite into LeBron or RBK All American Camps). The SWIC was held at the luxurious Recreation and Wellness Center on the University of Houston campus, and open to the public at no charge. Everything ran as smoothly as a well oiled machine. The players were shuffled through eight stations with each offering a different fundamental angle to mastering basketball at the most simplified level. “In this camp we try to limit the kids to as little idle time as possible,” explained Coach Lucas. Thank goodness for the hot catered dinner comprised of Chicken, green beans, potato salad, and dirty rice (make that durrty rice). Afterwards, the eight teams of nine players each, practiced for thirty minutes before taking the four adjacent courts for a session of very competitive evening games. On the second day, the intensity level was even greater as a total of 44 college coaches flocked into the facility to evaluate the potential prospects. This marked the first day which D1 coaches were permitted to attend events since the end of April. Meanwhile, the campers treated the coaches to a brief display of what they had learned within the previous 18 hours at the various drill stations. Dozens of the coaches were attentively taking notes and seriously observing the drills. “There needs to be more of this (drill stations at camps),” stated a Division One coach who wished to remained anonymous. “A lot of camps just roll out the balls and let kids rip and run all over the place, then on top of that, we have to spend an hour trying to match kids with the right jersey numbers.” With many events hitting the coaches deep in the right pockets (prices ranging from $100 - $300) for incomplete coaches’ packets, the SWIC provided exclusive info of each camper, including photo for only $60. This enables the coaches to reflect back to the packet and get a visual of a kid weeks after the event has ended. The final two hours of the camp were filled with two rounds of games and by 1:30 campers were fed their complimentary third meal and given a souvenir t shirt as they exited the facility. “I just took my son to San Diego and spent five hundred dollars (not including airfare) and they (campers) had to stay in dorms,” state Laval Perry, a parent who made the trip along with his son from Flint, Michigan. “We both traveled here for half the cost of what I paid last week”. No doubt, everyone loves bargains, and the Southwest Invitational Camp was (hands down) one of the very best camps ever assembled. Speaking of reflecting, here are some of the most memorable campers from the event: TOP 12 PERFORMERS (according to camp coaches and evaluators) DANIEL ALEXANDER 6’8 f (Dripping Springs HS 2010) Camp Team: Suns Summer Team: Texas D1 Ambassors Why Daniel? Because this was primarily a skill and drill camp, and he was magna cum laude in both categories. The icing on the cake was during the game sessions. Daniel lived up to the hype, running the floor well and simply making plays on both ends. DARRIUS CURRY 6’6 wg (Elsik HS 2010) Camp Team: Cavs Summer Team: Team Genesis Why Darius? Because the long lanky wing got the rare chance to show the world what he could do at his natural position – the wing. After blasting four straight three balls within a 90 second span, he promptly established himself as one of the best wings in the building. Even when he missed (shots), it looked great (as far as form and rotation). From that point on, all he had to do was hold serve, which of course he did. COREY GARRETT 6’8 pf (Center HS 2009) Camp Team: Pistons Summer Team: Dallas Mustangs Why Corey? Because this country strong post was list among the Top 3 players on everyone’s ballot. He rebounded very well, was athletic, and had dozens of coaches following the bald head kid from Center, Texas from court to court. Most importantly, he gave his all during the drill stations, plus displayed a great amount of sportsmanship and enthusiasm from beginning to end. GARLON GREEN 6’7 wg (Hightower HS 2009) Camp Team: Celtics Summer Team: Houston Hoops Why Garlon? Because a camp wouldn’t be as exciting without that one guy who relentlessly beating up the rims with eye catching dunks. He gave spectators the entire ‘WOW-factor’. Plus, he had the perimeter game working in full effect. “Garlon Green is the most athletic and impressive player I’ve seen all summer,” stated a college coach who wished to remain anonymous since they aren’t allowed to publicly speak about unsigned prospects. ALEX KIRK 6’10 c (Los Alamos HS 2010) Camp Team: Heat Summer Team: Southwest Titans (NM) Why Alex? Because he performed great when it counted most – in front of the college coaches. Alex did well facing up, plus ran the floor impressively considering this type of camp setting. MILOS KNEZEVIC 6’8 f (Las Vegas Liberty HS 2009) Camp Team: Lakers Summer Team: Hard Guardz Why Milos? Because he excelled in the drills, and simply made plays with or without the rock. He’s a very smart player who was more comfortable facing the rim. Milos routinely stuck the mid range jumper with consistency. Led the Lakers with 15ppg. KENNY ONYECHI 6’6 pf (Kempner HS 2009) Camp Team: Suns Summer Team: Southwest Celtics Why Kenny? Because the brute strong power forward was the talk of the gym on Saturday after posting 41pts in the Suns’ pair of wins. This kid was on a mission to prove something to somebody, and that mission was accomplished. On Sunday, he tallied 17pts and 19pts to finish as the camp’s scoring leader (19.2ppg). TOBI OYEDEJI 6’7 f (Bellaire HS 2010) – Camp Team: Celtics Summer Team: Houston Hoops Why Tobi? Because this kid displayed the most consistent level of energy and had the best arsenal of low post moves of all big men attending the camp. Averaged 12.5ppg, including double digits in three of the four games of which the Celtics went unbeaten. GABE ROGERS 6’2 sg (Klein Forest HS 2008) Camp Team: Celtics Summer Team: Houston Knights Why Gabe? Because he was the smoothest and best performing guard in the building. Not only did Gabe routinely blow past first and second defenders to get to the rim, he also created shots for his teammates as well. Any concerns about him still being an unsigned senior should be ending very soon. As a matter/ fact, Southern University invited him to Baton Rouge (for a visit) only a couple days after witnessing his SWIC performance. I can see it now.... from SWIC to SWAC. AUGUSTINE RUBIT 6’7 pf (Smiley / North Forest HS 2009) Camp Team: Cavs Summer Team: Houston Hoops Why Augustine? Because he found a niche doing some of the very important things that most of the camp’s big men didn’t want to do, he stayed near the rim and rebounded – on both sides of the ball. A minor ankle sprain limited his mobility, but the kid displayed a great deal of heart by returning to the court and playing right through the injury. Averaged 13.5ppg in the game sessions. BRIAN WILLIAMS 6’4 wg (Baton Rouge Glen Oaks HS 2010) Camp Team: Heat Summer Team: Texas D1 Ambassadors Why Brian? Because he played extremely hard and gave his all during both the drills and games. Not to mention the fact that the explosive guard shot the rock like he was Ray Allen’s little brother or something. Would have been great to see he and Garlon Green in a dunk off. ERIK WILLIAMS 6’6 f (Cy Springs HS 2009) Camp Team: Rockets Summer Team: Houston Select Why Erik? Because for a kid to have not played organized ball since January knee surgery, Erik came out and immediately shined out like red nail polish. He shot the three and rebounded well. Also was impressive handling the rock in the open court. The gym is still buzzing after his pair of follow up dunks over Tobi Oyedeji during Sunday’s session. WATCH OUT FOR THESE PUPPIES (they lived up to the hype)! WANNAH BAIL 6’8 f (tba HS 2012) Camp Team: Lakers Summer Team: DARRYL MILBURN 6’3 g (Baton Rouge McKinley HS 2012) Camp Team: Suns Summer Team: Bayou Flames (LA) J’MYCHAL REESE 6’1 pg (Bryan, Texas HS 2012) Camp Team: Lakers Summer Team: Houston Hoops “LJ” ROSE 6’2 pg (Second Baptist HS 2012) Camp Team: Heat Summer Team: Houston Hoops
