Vipers Capture Region 1 Premier League Championship

After defeating Rockville Center (NYE) 6-2 in the semifinals on Saturday, May 10, the Vipers won a hard-fought match with the Montclair Aristocats (NJ) by a 2-1 margin to claim the US Youth Soccer Region 1 Premier League Championship.  Now it's on to Maine for the US Youth Soccer Region 1 Championships.  This will mark the Vipers' fourth consecutive year at Regionals, and their fifth overall.  Last year, as EPYSA State Cup Champs, they advanced the Region 1 final, where they lost a close 1-0 match with the eventual National champions.

Congratulations, Vipers!!!!

Viper Trio Earns All-SE PA Honors

At the Dec. 12 Southeastern Pennsylvania Soccer Coaches Association banquet, three Vipers were named to the annual 2007 SE PA All-Star Team. Pictured at the banquet (left to right) are juniors Madlyn Evans (Abington High School), Jen Hoy (Germantown Academy) and Taylor Houck (Germantown Academy).

Viper Clare Roche Aims High -- For a Cause

While the Vipers are in Orlando competing in the Disney Showcase event, one of their own will be thousands of miles away, embarking on a journey that will not only challenge her mentally and physically, but will also benefit a very worthy cause.

Clare Roche, a 16 year old junior at Council Rock High School North in Newtown, Pennsylvania, will attempt to become among the youngest girls to reach the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak. Clare's goal, however, is not just to reach the peak, but to highlight the plight of children -- especially girls -- in Africa, where war, famine, drought and other crises leave young people educationally disadvantaged and vulnerable to myriad threats. She will be climbing to raise awareness and funds for UNICEF.

UNICEF, which was created by the United Nations in 1946, provides emergency relief including food, water, health care and sanitation. In Africa, it protects children who are victims of disasters and those who have been abused or exploited, separated from their families, or forced to become soldiers or sex slaves in ongoing conflicts.

Clare will begin the seven-day odyssey on Christmas, and her group will trek for four to eight hours each day. On the final day, they'll rise before midnight, put on headlamps and attempt the push to summit -- 19,340 feet above Tanzania. If you'd like more information or would like to join Clare in supporting UNICEF, you can check out her Emergency Response Team at http://www.unicefusa.org/ert/clare .

Vipers Fall 1-0 in Region 1 Final
The U16G US Youth Soccer Region I NCS final lived up to its billing today. The McLean Freedom notched the game's only goal in the 39th minute, and that's all it took to claim the 2007 Region I Championship. The Vipers gave it their all -- keeping the game incredibly close and competitive, and creating a number of opportunities.

Congratulations to the Freedom -- now go win it all for Region I.

A great effort and terrific NCS run by the Vipers -- way to go, girls -- be proud of your achievements and look forward to next year!

Monday, July 2
Vipers Advance to Region 1 Championship Match
After clinching their third straight EPA State Cup title, the Vipers set their sites on the State of Maine, host of the 2007 US Youth Soccer Region I Championships. With convincing preliminary wins over New Jersey champs Montclair (1-0), Rhode Island (8-0) and New York West (4-1), the team faced Maryland's Laurel Wildcats on Monday, July 2 and came away with a solid 7-2 victory, earning them their first trip to the Region I Finals.

The Vipers will play McLean Freedom at 10 AM on Tuesday 7/3 for the chance to represent Region I at the US Youth Soccer National Championship Series finals later this month.

Congratulations Vipers!!!!

Monday, June 18
Vipers Complete State Cup Three-Peat
The Vipers demonstrated that heart, depth and talent are hard to beat yesterday as they completed the 2007 EPYSA State Cup competition with a convincing 5-0 win over the T/E Hot Socs to claim their third consecutive State Cup. The team has won five of the last six State Cup titles in their age group, and have been a finalist in each of the past six years.

Now it's on to Maine for the USYSA Region 1 Championships, where they will meet the State Cup champs from New Jersey, Western New York and Rhode Island in preliminary round matches.

Congratulations, Vipers. Good luck in Regionals!

***********Winter/Spring '08*************

Madlyn Evans was selected to the Region I Girls ODP Under 19 team that will be participating in the Kuban Spring Women’s Football Tournament in Krymsk (Krasnodar Region), Russia from March 3rd to 15th. Other teams participating include the Russia U-19 National Team, the Poland U-19 National Team, the Ukraine U-19 National Team and regional and professional teams from Russia.

=

Colleen Williams, a member of the Region 1 ODP Championship Team from New Jersey, is making a return trip to the US Youth Soccer ODP National Championships, beginning March 7th at Pizza Hut Park in Frisco, Texas.  This marks the second consecutive year that the New Jersey squad has competed in the ODP National Tournament.  Last year, her NJ '91 team went all the way -- claiming the National Championship.

Good luck, Colleen!!!!!!!

***********Fall '07*************

Three Vipers were named to the Southeastern Pennsylvania Soccer Coaches Association 2007 All-Southeastern PA Team. Juniors Taylor Houck and Jen Hoy of Germantown Academy, and Madlyn Evans of Abington were among the 20 high school players from throughout the region honored at the Association's annual banquet on December 12th.

=

Just as sure as the leaves will fall from the trees along Holland Road, autumn is predictably a time for the Villa Joseph Marie soccer team to dominate the PIAA AA scene. And this year was no exception. Led by seniors Stephanie Lawall, Julia Bell and Erica Sobotka, and juniors Alysha Mallon and Erin Galen, the VJM Jems advanced to the State Championship match. Despite out-shooting their opponent by a wide margin, the game ended in a tie, and the teams were declared co-champions. Congratulations to the Vipers' core of Villa champs on yet another great season.

=

Another fall stalwart of school soccer is the Germantown Academy squad, which this year captured its 17th consecutive Inter-Ac title. Junior defender Taylor Houck and junior forward Jen Hoy were instrumental in the Patriots' run to a 20-2-0 record. Taylor was again named the team's overall MVP and Defensive MVP, and Jen grabbed Offensive MVP honors.

=

Pennington School is another Viper-dominated school program, with juniors Heidi Sabatura and Alexa Carugati and sophomore Kaitlyn Kerr on the roster. Despite sorely missing Alexa's contributions this fall (as she worked to come back from a knee injury), the Pennington team won their 5th consecutive Prep A State Championship and the Mercer County Tournament, while compiling a 19-3-0 record and a #17 NSCAA national ranking.

=

Madlyn Evans and Kaitlyn Kerr represented the Region I '91 and '92 teams (respectively) at the annual US Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program Girls Thanksgiving Interregional event in Coral Springs, Florida.

********** Summer '07 **********

Congratulations to Kaitlyn Kerr (2010) for being called up to the US U-15 National Team for a Training Camp held September 17-23 at the National Training Center in Carson California". In addition to training sessions and other events, Kait will participate in the Nike Friendlies, including 3 matches with U-17 club teams.

=

Congratulations to Colleen Williams (2009), Madlyn Evans (2009) and Kaitlyn Kerr (2010) for making the Regional Pool following their Regional Camps held at the University of Rhode Island in July.

=

Taylor Houck (Germantown Academy '09) was named to the All-Intelligencer 1st Team for her performance on the GA squad last fall.

=

Tara Murphy (Council Rock South '08) was named to the Bucks County Courier Times' "All Golden" 1st team for her prowess between the pipes during the spring season. Tara allowed just one goal throughout Rock's run through District and State playoffs.

=

Madlyn Evans took part in the 2007 Adidas ESP event in Pomona, California, July 12-15, and was named to the ESP All-Star team. Participants were selected based on recommendations from a national scouting network. Just before heading to California, she earned a spot on the USYSA Region 1 team for a fifth straight year.

=

Taylor Houck, Yvonne Moyer, Julie Oberholtzer and Madlyn Evans will represent Eastern PA in the USYSA ODP Region 1 Championships on June 23 and 24 in Kirkwood, Delaware. The U16 ('91) Eastern PA team won its bracket in the with victories over Virginia, PA West and New Hampshire. The EPA team will face Eastern New York South in the semifinals. If EPA and NJ both win their semifinal matches, there would be Vipers on both the finalist squads!

(+++++UPDATE+++++ The PA and NJ ODP teams both advanced, and on June 24th the teams squared off in Delaware to determine who would move on to Nationals. It was a hard-fought match, but New Jersey pulled off a 2-1 win to return to the championships. This will be Colleen Williams' second straight year playing in the National championships as a member of the Region 1 champion New Jersey '91 ODP team!)

=

Kaitlyn Kerr will play with the U15 Eastern PA team in the USYSA ODP Region 1 Championships on June 23 and 24 in Kirkwood. The team beat Eastern New York South, Delaware and West Virginia to advance to the semifinals vs. Virginia.

********** Spring '07 **********

Yvonne Moyer (Pennsbury '09) was named to the Suburban One All-League First team, and as the school's leading scorer was named Offensive Player of the Year for the second straight season.

=

Colleen Williams ('09) was a key member of the New Jersey '91 ODP State Team that won the USYSA National ODP Championship this year. The NJ ODP will compete in the USYSA Region 1 ODP Championships in Kirkwood, Delaware on June 23 and 24 for a chance to return to Nationals. Congratulations, Coll!!!!

=

Clare Roche ('09), a defender for Council Rock North High School, was named to the Suburban One All-League Second Team.

=

Julie Oberholtzer ('09) and Tara Murphy ('08) were instrumental in Council Rock South's impressive run through the PIAA playoffs this spring. "South" made it to the quarterfinals this year, where they lost on PKs.

=

Madlyn Evans ('09) was named to the Suburban One All-League First Team. She is a sophomore midfielder with Abington High School, and was the team's leading scorer for the second straight year.

=

Kaitlyn Kerr and Madlyn Evans traveled to Holland in April as part of the USYSA Region 1 Team competing in a U17 tournament vs. national teams from Holland, England, Ireland, Scotland and Russia.
