WELCOME to the THUNDER 18 GOLD WEBSITE

The CALIFORNIA THUNDER originated in the early 1990's under Tom Tucker of Tucker Tires in Covina. After winning the 18U ASA National Title in the mid 90's beating the OC Batbusters in the final, the team remained competitive in ASA for several years. After Tom retired from coaching, the organization dissolved. In Fall 2000, a revival attempt was made by Manager and Coach Valerie Van Kirk, who grew up and played in the San Gabriel Valley. Since then, the California Thunder Organization has developed into a highly competitive TRAVEL BALL ORGANIZATION. We currently have two strong 18 GOLD teams competing and preparing for the 2008/2009 FALL/WINTER RECRUITING season. We offer a large and talented recruiting class of 2009 graduates. Our focus includes all 18 GOLD SHOWCASE TOURNAMENTS to provide the players with the MAXIMUM EXPOSURE to display their talents. We have evolved into an organization with 5 teams in age divisions 12U - 18 Gold.

Our 2008/2009 Fall/Winter schedule includes: all major showcases... Worth Firecrackers Fall startup, Stockton R&R Showcase of Talent, Surf City Fall Showcase, Oktoberfest and Pre-Thanksgiving Showcases as well as Amercia's Finest Showcase in Escondido. Our summer schedule will include: Boulder, Co. Showcase, Las Vegas JO Classic, American Pastime Memorial Day Tournament,  Ventura Tourney By the Sea, Champions Cup  and all Gold Qualifiers.

THE CALIFORNIA THUNDER ORGANIZATION is a 501(C)3 NON-PROFIT YOUTH BASEBALL and SOFTBALL ORGANIZATION that has two competitive teams at the 18 GOLD level, coached by VAN KIRK-Levier and Joe Vargas, one in the 16U division coached by Valerie Van Kirk, one in the 14U division (Flores), and a 12U team under Jerry Chavez.

Our coaching staff provides an ASA ALL-AMERICAN female coach in VALERIE VAN KIRK-LeVIER (CAL STATE FULLERTON)with over 30 YEARS of experience in ASA, NCAA DIV. I, and the PROFESSIONAL LEVEL. We have coaches that are FORMER PLAYERS of the game and have been COLLEGIATE STANDOUTS or ASA All-Americans and more.

The THUNDER program a premiere practice field.

Thank you for your interest in the THUNDER organization and we appreciate the support from all those who are assisting these athletes pursue their dreams in athletics and academics.

THUNDER Players Leading their College and PRO Teams
Senior Rachel Folden -Marshall University   "Marshall University senior Rachel Folden highlighted the Conference USA softball banquet when she was presented the highly coveted Player of the Year Award voted by the conference coaches, Wednesday evening.

The Baldwin Park, Calif., native, Folden, was also named to the All-C-USA First Team at the catcher's position. With a .433 batting average, Folden led the conference with a .920 slugging percentage, .568 on base percentage, 53 runs scored and tied with Laurie Wagner of Houston with 17 home runs.

Folden is now a three-time First Team All-Conference USA selectee and named C-USA Player of the Year for a second time. She took home the award in 2006 as a sophomore. The Lowe's Senior Class Award finalist was also named to the C-USA Academic Team. Rachel is also listed in the top ten in almost every 2008 NCAA Division 1 hitting category nationwide."

FOLDEN in the PROs:

Players to Watch
Chicago Bandits:  The players to watch for Chicago will all look to provide the offense for the Bandits. Sluggers Stacy May, Jaime Clark and Rachel Folden carried the Bandits to a league-best 32 wins. May was arguably the best player in the league this season and she finished the year as the only player to be in the top five in batting average (2nd - .391), homeruns (T1st – 13) and RBIs (T2nd – 34). Clark and Folden also were in the top five in homeruns and RBIs, finishing the season with 11 homeruns each and 38 and 34 RBIs, respectively. For the Bandits in the circle, a pair of 12 game winners in Kristina Thorson and Jessica Sallinger will most likely be given the ball in the team’s first two games of the playoffs.

Senior Sara Gofoth- Cal Baptist University  "California Baptist's Sara Goforth, named the Golden State Athletic Conference Player of the Year for the 2008 season"

Senior Christine (Nina) Navarro - Towson University  "Leading the Towson Tigers in batting average .353, most hits with 65, doubles with 9 and second in RBI's with 32. Nian was also named 1st Team All Conference."

Soph. Lacey LeVier - Univ. of Toledo "Leading her team in Doubles with 12, 16th in all of NCAA Division 1, 3rd in batting average .345, 3rd in total hits, 2nd in on base percentage .450 and second in slugging percentage .560 ."

Freshman Joanna (Jojo)Young- Fort Lewis Gollege "Fort Lewis College softball team defeated the Adams State Grizzlies 5-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Softball Championship tournament title game. The Skyhawks win their first-ever RMAC Championship and earn the RMAC's automatic birth to the NCAA Division II Softball Championship tournament regionals to be held in San Angelo, Texas next week. RMAC All-Tournament Team 1B - Joanna Young, Fort Lewis." Jojo is currently 3rd on her team in batting average at .308.

Soph. Melanie Ahumada (26-2)Cal Baptist University-   "Tossed a complete game, allowing just one run on five hits.  California Baptist was crowned the NAIA Region II Tournament champions. The Lancers (54-6) couldn’t have asked for a better way to close out Regional Tournament play by winning their fourth straight Region II title. Clutch hitting from veterans and a near perfect outing from the sophomore hurler made for a grand end to the home season for California Baptist leading her team to a Regional Championship. "
