Please let me know your thoughts on the site at:  ssmittle@bellsouth.net

A bit of a warning, I am graphically challenged and am much more interested in the information than the "looks" of the site.  That being said, the emphasis will be on the information not the graphics.

Summer Baseball At Buchholz *** UPDATED ***

Buchholz Summer Baseball  Information sheet 2008

 1.         Season length: May 19 thru July 3, 2008

2.         INFO:

            A. 3 teams - 2 JV and 1 Varsity

            B.     The JV teams will play 1 tournament

            C. The Varsity will probably play 2, 1 out of town

3.         Budget – (See attached Handout for Budget Details)   Total  $20,000

4.         Everyone will need to have a plain pair of white pants, we do not have enough to pass out for everyone.

5.         Fees - $400 per player

6.         All teams will play about 20 games

7.         We need help transporting players to away games. We also will need parent assistance at the gate and concession stand.

8.         Summer Baseball is considered tryouts for next year’s team. Everyone on the Summer Baseball Team will have equal opportunity to play during the summer.  We are trying to decide on whether to have one JV team or a 9th and a JV team for next year.

9.         Tryouts for Summer Baseball League will be May 19th , 21st and 22nd. The summer rosters will be posted at the front of the gym on Friday May 23rd, 2008 with instructions for the following week.

Additional Information on Summer Baseball

The following are notes taken from the Summer Baseball Meeting:

The first practice will be May 19th at 5:00pm. All grade level players

will report that date, including incoming freshman. There will be 3

teams, if there are enough players to accommodate 3 full rosters. One

varsity team, with predominately Jr. and Sr. players and 2 JV teams with

a mix of 9th and 10th grade players. There is the possibility of some

upcoming 10th graders to be 'floated' back and forth between JV and

Varsity. The summer season will be used as a 'tryout' for the 08-09

season.  Players will be evaluated on how hard they work, putting in the extra time and

their "want to".  Position depth will also be a factor.

The first game will be Tuesday, May 27th. All games are planned to be

weekdays, unless there is an issue with weather. The varsity team will

play 2 weekend tournaments in June. One planned for out of town and one

for in town. The varsity team will use wood bats during the weekday

games and regular bats in the weekend tournaments.

The schedule is tentatively set for 12-14 games. There will be practice

on those days when there are no games.

Buchholz activities (practice/games) must be first priority if a player

is playing with another team during the summer. There is not a problem

with a player playing with another team during the summer program when

there is not a conflict. The only issue could occur if the player is a

pitcher and they have pitched during the week, they should be very

careful about throwing too much on the weekend.

We are scheduled to be finished by July 3rd. After the summer schedule

of games there will be an opportunity to participate in a weight

training and conditioning program during July and August. After the

conditioning program there will be a competitive fall season for those

players selected by the coaching staff. The fall season will start the

1st or 2nd week of October and be completed by Thanksgiving. There will

be some baseball players that also play another sport during the fall

and this will not be held against them making the team.

Wood Bat Information from Coach Banes -

  • don't spend too much money as they break
  • make sure you get 2
  • wood composite cost a bit more but break less
  • make sure the players save their batter bats for the games, a cracked bat will work for bp
  • the team is looking into making a bulkpurchase

Summer Schedule - Subject to Change

Friday, June 6
News from Parent Meeting

At the parent meeting Coach discussed his plans for the plans for the summer:

The summer will be used to evaluate the players to determine who will make the fall and spring teams.  The number of teams will be based on how many high school quality players we have.  The goal is to have Varsity, JV and 9th grade teams, but we must be able to field a quality team in each age.  The number of teams may be impacted by the number of players playing other sports but that players are encouraged to play other sports.

After July 4th, summer baseball will change to conditioning and weight lifting lead by Coach Jossi.

Alan Chatman discussed the costs of the summer program, the need for volunteers for each age group to assist with concessions, communications, and clean up.  Organizers for each team were signed up - unfortunately, I did not write down the names.

Each player must provide:

Varsity - case of waters and a can of GatorAde mix for 6 gallons - NO RED!!!

JV's - a 12 pack of Coke, Diet Coke (regular Diet Coke), Sprite and a can of GatorAde mix for 6 gallons - NO RED!!!
