Monday, December 3 Brother Martin wins 2007 Black Horse Invitational
New Orleans team dominatesWins Black Horse for 3rd straight year
By By Devin Misko Sunday, December 2, 2007 Christian Brothers sat in first place heading into the finals of the Black Horse Invitational at Houston High on Saturday, but New Orleans Brother Martin, with a dominating performance, pulled away to win the tournament for the third straight year. "Those guys in the finals have been there before," said Brother Martin coach Matt Lambert. "Those are the leaders of my team, and they came through again." The Crusaders finished with 261.5 points to the Purple Wave's 244.5. Third place went to the Hixson Wildcats with 195 points, followed by St. Benedict (150.5) and the host Mustangs (149.5). "We were pleased with where we were," said Christian Brothers coach Chris Lewis. "We wanted to wrestle well, and we did. We came up short, but I'm pleased with the guys." Brother Martin did not lose a match in the championship round. The Crusaders finished the round 6-0, and their wins featured four pins. One of the pins came from Ben Dussouy, wrestling in the 171-pound class. Dussouy held an 8-0 lead over Marcus Jones of Germantown before successfully outmaneuvering Jones for the victory. "I expected him to be strong," said Dussouy. "I wore him down and got the advantage with a couple of seconds left and got it." The Crusaders started their winning ways with a pin when Josh Raley, wrestling in the 103-pound class, took down Duy Dang of Bartlett. Brother Martin also got a key victory from Nick Shields in the 125-pound class. Shields pinned Ryan Prince of Huntsville (Ala.) Shields was named Outstanding Wrestler for the tournament. "Our ultimate goal in every tournament is to win," said Lambert. "I thought we had a shot, and we really performed well in the end." Christian Brothers finished 1-4 in the championship round, with the lone win coming from Daniel Baucke in the 112-pound class. In the lone championship match between the top two teams, Brother Martin's Andrew Casadaban defeated Christian Brothers' Zach Hanniford, 5-1. "All the people who got to the finals talked," Casadaban said, "and there was no way we were losing this tournament." Christian Brothers finished 4-0 in the consolation round, but could not overcome the strength of Brother Martin's championship performance. "(Brother Martin) are used to winning," Lewis said. "They are a perennial state contender, and they have a killer instinct. They stepped up when they knew they had to." Sunday, November 25 Brother Martin wins Spartan Invitational Brother Martin wins Spartan InvitationalSt. Michael’s Willeford earns top honorBy ROBIN FAMBROUGH Advocate sportswriter Published: Nov 22, 2007 - Page: 11C GONZALES — Trying to predict what might happen late in the wrestling season based on one early-season match can be tricky. However, the 35-team Spartan Invitational provided a glimpse into the future and then some.Brother Martin of New Orleans claimed the team title Wednesday night with 188 points, finishing ahead of Catholic High (145). St. Paul won an intense battle for third with 89 points, finishing ahead of Archbishop Shaw (82) and Brusly (81).While winning was nice, the chance to check out the competition and gain experience was perhaps the most important thing as teams completed the third week of the regular season.“This is the first tournament we’ve been in where they’ve kept team scores,” Brother Martin coach Matt Lambert said. “So it was definitely good to see where we are in that regard and to see Catholic for the first time this year.“Our seniors pretty much held their own. Some of the young guys made mistakes, but they’re correctable. All you need is mat time and this is a start.”Ben Willeford of St. Michael the Archangel was voted the Outstanding Wrestler in the tournament that was held before Thanksgiving for the first time. Willeford has won the 103-pound class in all three tournaments thus far.“I thought my conditioning was good,” Willeford said. “And I thought I did a good job (wrestling) on top. I still need to do some work on the bottom. I’m pleased, but I can improve.”Willeford ousted Brother Martin’s Josh Raley 6-1 in his title match. Michael Greishaber (112), Nick Shields (125), Andrew Casadaban (135), Justin Loehn (189) were individual champions for Brother Martin.“I know it’s early, but you’ve got some matches here you could see in the state finals in February,” East Ascension coach Pat Mahoney said. “A lot of these guys train all year and you can see that here.”Catholic had three individual winners in Alex Hurst (119), Beau Town (130) and Trent Fresina (152).“Not a bad tournament for us,” Catholic coach Tommy Prochaska said. “I thought Brother Martin looked good. We were able to get a lot of experience. There are always going to be wins and losses, it’s what you learn from them that’s important.”Going into the finals, Brother Martin had had a comfortable lead on the rest of the field. It was anything but comfortable for the three teams locked in a battle for third. A computer scoring error that had the top six finishers scoring instead of the top four also complicated things.Brusly, another top local team and the defending Division III-Classes 3A and below champion, was announced as the third-place finisher. When the scoring was corrected, St. Paul came away with third, scoring 89 points. Archbishop Shaw-Marrero (82) and Brusly (81) were next.Three other local wrestlers also claimed individual titles — Zach Eunice of St. Amant (145), Blake Fourroux of Redemptorist (160), Joey Hood of Brusly (215) were the other local winners.“We’re pleased with the way it worked out,” EAHS’ Mahoney said. “We used to have it after Thanksgiving and got maybe half as many teams.“It was a good tournament with more teams and now we get Thanksgiving off. It doesn’t get much better than that.” Wednesday, August 29
