Awards Party Set for July 16th!

The end-of-season awards party will be Wednesday, July 16th from 6pm until 9pm at the home of Buccaneer 1st VP, Ray Smith.  Located on the bay at 11314 Cedar Gully, Beach City, Texas, swimmers will enjoy swimming and volleyball.  The team will provide the barbecue, which will be cooked to perfection by Ray Smith and Oscar Chapa.  Swimmers are asked to bring the following side dishes: A-K sodas (regular and diet), L-P chips and dips, R-Z desserts.

Awards will be given to swimmers for meet participation, perfect meet attendance, most improved swimmer in each age category, and high point scorer for each age category.  In addition, we will send off our seniors with scholarships.  Hope to see everyone there...

Buccaneers Dunk Wahoos!

The Baytown Buccaneers met the Heritage Park Wahoos at Friendswood City Pool for the final Dual Meet of the season.  Both teams were shy most of their older swimmers due to a water polo tournament in Dallas and the National Junior and Youth training camps in Los Angeles, California.  But the younger swimmers were ready to step-it-up for their teams.  Both the Buccaneers and Wahoos started strong, and after event 30, only 8 points separated the teams.  Throughout the meet, the score teetered back and forth.  No team ever pulled ahead by more than 20 points.  After the final relays, however, Baytown ended up with the hard-fought win, with a score of 367.5 to 354.5.

High scorer for the meet was Reanna Rosales, the lone 15-18 girl swimming for Baytown, with 20 points.  Following closely behind was John Coggins, Mark Grijalva, and Nick Cullum, with 15 points a piece; Shanna Orr with 13 points, Eunice Alaniz with 12 points, Darla Vasquez and Tommy Goodman with 11 points each, Lauren Gray with 10.5 points; and Abbey Houghton and Kristen Carnes with 10 points each.

Many swimmers posted their best times of the season and qualified for the Champs Meet.  These include: John Coggins, Tommy Goodman, Devin Martin, Mark Grijalva, Lauren Gray, Nick Cullum, Reanna Rosales, Nick Maiden, Eunice Alaniz, William Coggins, Caroline Olsen, Joshua Houghton, Alexis Arabie, Adrian Romo, Ryan Fugere, Rachel Lahowotz, Kristen Carnes, Tyler Sager, and Shanna Orr.

In addition, many swimmers posted times that will qualify them for the Reserve meet including: Natalie Pence, Arthur Jones, Abbey Houghton, Shanna Orr, Heather Fugere, Bryce Smith, Logan Fanning, Alexis Arabie, Rachel Lahowotz, Sarah Modisette, Aaron Arabie, Jessica Sigers, Reagan Sharp, Logan Fanning, Caroline Olsen, Kevin Trejo, and Sabrina Gray.

Next week, the Buccaneers co-host the Novice, Reserve, and Champs Meet Series at the Sterling Natatorium.  All swimmers should circle-in by Tuesday afternoon.  Go Bucs!

Bucanneer Girls Go Wacky!

A small contingent of Baytown Buccaneer girls traveled to the Nassau Bay pool on Wednesday, June 18th to participate in the 8th annual Wacky Relays.  The girls had a great time and made a strong showing, winning several events along the way.

First up was the Seahorse Hop in which swimmers must 'ride' a foam noodle using a breast stroke kick to make their ways down the pool.  Madeline Poirot, Darla Vasquez, Nicole Poirot, and Amy Olsen swam the relay for Baytown.  Olsen was a strong final leg in this race, but it wasn't enough to have the team place in the top three spots.

But, Olsen got a second chance in the Corkscrew Relay.  She partnered with Madison Pepper, Eunice Alaniz, and well-known corkscrew ringer, Katie Vasquez.  The corkscrew requires the swimmers to alternate one freestyle stroke with one backstroke all the way down the pool.  No teams were a match for the Baytown girls, and they brought home the gold.

Vasquez wasn't so lucky when she swam with her sister and the Poirot girls in the rafts event.  It was a rough event, but the crowd was behind the Buccanettes, chanting 'NOT DEAD LAST! NOT DEAD LAST!' as the girls tried their hardest.  And, in fact, the girls were not dead last (but then again, they weren't first, either).

Next up, Olsen, Pepper, Alaniz, and Katie Vasquez competed in the Rafts event, in which the swimmers had to move the raft up and down the pool using a noodle as a paddle.  The Baytown girls finished first, although the final results from the relay aren't quite in yet, since it appears that every team was disqualified for some type of cheating...

One of the funnest events of the night was the Innertube Relays.  Madeline Poirot was first up for the team, with a spectacular jump into the pool that completely up-ended her, the innertube (and possibly the swimmer in the lane next to her).  Her sister Nicole made a nice recovery on the second leg of the relay, and Darla Vasquez made advances in her leg also.  But, the competition was too far ahead for Eunice Alaniz to make up the distance in the final leg.

Alaniz made up for the innertube debacle in the IronMan race.  She and her partner, Madison Pepper, were unbeatable as they swam the 400 yards (alternating each 50).  The Clear Lake City Stars, who thought they had the race in the bag, were stunned by the surprise upset.

The penultimate race for the girls was the Tandem race, in which two swimmers must hook-up with one providing the arm strokes and one providing the leg kicks.  Amy Olsen and Katie Vasquez took a strong lead for the team in the first leg, and Eunice Alaniz and Madison Pepper hung on in the last leg for the girls to be awarded first place.

The final race for the girls was the T-shirt Relay, in which the participants must pass the relay off to the next swimmer by transferring a t-shirt.  The Baytown girls (Madison Pepper, Darla Vasquez, Nicole Poirot, and Madeline Poirot) had a great technique of locking arms and having two teammates transfer the shirt among swimmers (special thanks to Amy Olsen, Josh Houghton, Bobby Woolweaver, and Katie Vasquez), but still came up a little short when the final times were in.

The Wacky Relays were a great success, and a fun time was had by all.  Special thanks to Nassau Bay for once again hosting such a wonderful event.

Buccaneers Best Dolphins

The Baytown Buccaneers took on the Timber Cove Dolphins inside the Sterling Natatorium on Saturday, June 14th in the Bucs only interdivisional meet for the 2008 season.  Although the Dolphins had some good swims, the Buccaneers proved to be too deep to defeat.  Final score was Baytown 465, Timber Cove 251.

High scorers for Baytown included: Katie Vasquez, Eunice Alaniz, Bryce Smith, John Coggins and Stevie Ray with 15 points each; Darla Vasquez, Devin Martin, Heather Fugere, Matt Chapa and Amy Olsen with 13 points each; Aaron Arabie with 12 points, Abbey Houghton, Madison Pepper, Lauren Gray and Logan Fanning with 11 points each; Josh Houghton, Taylor Sharp and Shanna Orr with 10 points each.

In addition, many swimmers achieved Champs and or Reserve times in this meet.  Achieving a Champs time in one or more events were: Eunice Alaniz, Devin Martin, William Coggins, Katie Vasquez, Madison Pepper, Taylor Sharp, Jared Barrientes, Gabe Chapa, Sydney Phillips, Lauren Gray, Amy Olsen, Stevie Ray, Matt Chapa, Cade Moorman, Adrian Romo, Jessica Sigers, Reanna Rosales, Tara Brigham, Alexis Arabie, Abbey Houghton, Tyler Sager, Ryan Fugere, Rachel Lahowotz, Heather Fugere, and Shanna Orr.

Achieving a Reserve time in one or more events were: Jessica Sigers, Callie Woodruff, Natalie Pence, John Coggins, Arthur Jones, Heather Fugere, Shanna Orr, Bryce Smith, Logan Fanning, Alexis Arabie, Rachel Lahowotz, Daniela Romo, Mark Coggins, Abby Houghton, Sydney Phillips, Aaron Arabie, Mark Coggins, Justin Bradford, Caroline Olsen, Adulfo Amador, and Emily Gray.

Congratulations to all of our swimmers.  Don't forget to circle in by Tuesday to swim in our final dual meet next week.  Go Bucs!

Sharks Attack Buccaneers

The South Belt Sharks traveled to Baytown to meet the Buccaneers on Saturday, June 7th.  The teams were quite evenly matched - after the first 30 events, the score was tied at 129 a piece.  Both teams continued to put forth their best efforts.  By event 70, the Sharks had taken the lead by 8 points.  But, the Sharks proved too deep in the final relays, and turned the heat up for the Buccaneers.  The final score after 80 events: Sharks 389; Buccaneers 364.

High point scorers for Baytown include Madison Pepper, Tommy Goodman, and Eunice Alaniz, who each scored 15 points.  Following closely behind them were Mark Grijalva with 13 points, Shanna Orr with 13 points, Zayne Belal with 11 points, John Coggins with 11 points, Joshua Houghton with 11 points, Katie Vasquez with 11 points, Alexis Arabie with 10 points, and Matt Chapa with 10 points.

The following swimmers achieved Champs Times on one or more events at this meet: John Coggins, Eunice Alaniz, Darla Vasquez, Josh Houghton, William Coggins, Katie Vasquez, Amy Olsen, Gabe Chapa, Matt Chapa, Mark Grijalva, Will Kolodgie, Lauren Gray, Nick Cullum, Madison Pepper, Zayne Belal, Stevie Ray, Cade Moorman, Tommy Goodman, Shanna Orr, Jared Barrientes, Alexis Arabie, Tyler Sager, Rachel Lahowotz, Kristen Carnes, and Nick Maiden.

In addition, the following swimmers achieved Reserve Times on one or more events at this meet: Caroline Olsen, Natalie Pence, Abbey Houghton, Bryce Smith, Logan Fanning, Sydney Phillips, Alexis Arabie, Hanna Zerdo, Rachel Lahowotz, Arthur Jones, Meredith Gibson, Shanna Orr, Emily Gray, Aaron Arabie, Wyatt Carnes, Keith Carnes, Sabrina Gray, and Connor Carnes.

Congratulations to all of our swimmers.  Don't forget to circle-in by Tuesday's practice if you would like to swim in next Saturday's meet.  Go Bucs!

Coach TJ to Buy Wife Dinner!

In a stunning upset, Baytown lost its first home meet of the season to the Brooks Blue Marlins.  Despite some fantastic swims by the Buccaneers, the Marlins proved to be too difficult to defeat in this first meeting between the two teams.  Mark Grijalva was the high point scorer for Baytown with 15 points.  Following closely were Tommy Goodman with 13 points, Katie Vasquez and Eunice Alaniz with 12 points each, John Coggins and Madison Pepper with 11 points each, and Matt Chapa and Bryce Smith, who each scored 10 points.  In addition, many swimmers achieved Champs and Reserve times.

Coach TJ had a steak dinner riding on this meet, as the Blue Marlins are coached by his wife Coach Lauren.  Although TJ has to pony up for dinner, at least his wife will be speaking to him this week.  Final score for the meet was Brooks 442, Baytown 328.

Complete meet results and a progression of times are posted in the 'handouts' section of this website.  Remember, circle-in for next Saturday's meet is no later than Tuesday afternoon...Go Bucs!

Baytown wins first meet of the Season

The Baytown Buccaneers defeated the Seabrook Stingrays 376 to 335 on Saturday, May 17th at Seabrook Pool.  The overcast, breezy day kept spectators comfortable, but swimmers cold as the Buccaneers and Stingrays battled it out.  For the first 30 events or so, the score was quite close, but Baytown dominated in the later events - especially dominant were the older swimmers.  High scorer for the team was Katie Vasquez, at 18 points.  Following closely to Katie at 15 points each were Tommy Goodman, Eunice Alaniz, John Coggins and Darla Vasquez.  In addition, newcomer Will Kolodgie scored 14 points for the Buccaneers and Madison Pepper scored 13 points.

The upset of the season came when Katie Vasquez edged out Zayne Belal finishing second in the girls and boys combined 15-18 Butterfly.  Vasquez stated that she was happy to finally outswim Belal before he ended his high school run.  Stevie Ray placed first in the combined event.

Many swimmers made Champs and Reserves times, which are denoted by an 'a' and a 'b' respectively on the meet results.  Complete meet results can be found in the handouts section of this website.

Memorial Weekend will be a 'bye' weekend for the Bucs; the next meet will be at the RSS Natatorium on May 31st...Go Bucs!
