BSJW Awards Banquet
The Berkeley Springs Junior Wrestling Awards Banquet was held on Thursday, March 23 at the Moose. Wrestlers, coaches, parents and fans were on hand to celebrate the success of this years team and participants. Participation trophies and plaques were presented to all wrestlers who had competed throughout the length of the season. A pot luck dinner way enjoyed by all in attendance with chicken and sandwiches provided by the league.
Each year the Berkeley Springs Junior wrestling program recognizes several competitors for excellent performance during the season. This year, an outstanding wrestler award was presented to one individual from each classification.
This years Outstanding Bantam (age 4-7) award was presented to Chason Day. Chason distinguished himself with an overall record of 19 wins and six losses this year; with 14 of the wins coming by pin. He had 15 wins and five losses in his weight class. Chason won third place in the Mason Dixon Division A Qualifier but was unable to attend the league championship.
This years Outstanding Midget (age 8-9) award was presented to Jesse Wolford. Jesse distinguished himself with an overall record of 11 wins and nine losses this year; with eight of the wins coming by pin. He had six wins and two losses in his weight class. Jesse won second place in the Mason Dixon Division A Qualifier but was unable to attend the league championship.
This years Outstanding Junior (age 10-11) award was presented to Loguen McKee. Loguen distinguished himself with an overall record of 15 wins and five losses this year; with seven of the wins coming by pin. He had eight wins and no losses in his weight class. Loguen won first place in the Mason Dixon Division A Qualifier, and second place at the Mason Dixon Championship.
This years Outstanding Intermediate (age 12-14) award was presented to Richard Marshall. Richard distinguished himself with an overall record of 16 wins and four losses this year; with 11 of the wins coming by pin. He had three wins and no losses in his weight class. Richard won first place in the Mason Dixon Division A Qualifier, and second place at the Mason Dixon Championship.
Each year BSJW presents a Rookie of the Year award to a first year wrestler who has shown the most improvement throughout the year and exhibited the strongest attitude and aptitude for training and competing in the sport of wrestling. This years Rookie of the Year Award was presented to Steven Shade.
For the past two seasons, BSJW has presented a Sportsmanship/Team Leader Award. The trophy is generally presented to the wrestler who works the hardest in practice and exhibits a positive attitude throughout the season while being a positive role model for his team mates. This years Sportsmanship/ Team Leader Award was presented to Matt Marshall.
Other special recognition was as follows: BSJW had one Mason Dixon League Champion this year the first since 2003. This was Isaac Reed. There were eight wrestlers who were undefeated in class during the regular season this year. These were Cohen Hovermale, Isaac Reed, Loguen McKee, Preston Hovermale, Richard Marshall, Derek Hovermale, Ryan Diehl and Tory Bennett.

Mason Dixon Championship Results
On Sunday, March 12, the Berkeley Springs Junior
Wrestling team competed in the 23rd Annual Mason Dixon
League Championship held at Urbana High School in
Frederick Maryland. BSJW took 14 qualifying wrestlers
to the event.
The tribe crowned one champion at the tournament.
Isaac Reed, an 11 year old 5th grader wrestling in
the Junior 74 pound division, secured the first place
finish. Reed wrestled Cody Miller of Catoctin in the
first round and won easily with a second period
technical fall. In the second round, Reed drew Travis
Bartholomew of Brunswick who was the champion from the
Division B Qualifying Tournament. Reed won that match
5 2. In the final championship round Reed was
matched up against George Ardinger of Williamsport who
had beaten Reed last week to win the Division A
Qualifying tournament. Isaac was able to exact a
little revenge this week by winning the championship 4
2 over Ardinger in a tough match up.
Berkeley Springs wrestlers brought home two
second place trophies. These were won by Loguen
McKee, Junior 70 pounds; and Richard Marshall,
Intermediate 98 pounds. McKee, a sixth grader,
secured victories over Jake Lewis of Brunswick and
Cody Bowman of Boonsboro, before falling in the finals
to Brendon Colbert of the Hagerstown Police Athletic
League. Marshall, an eighth grader took wins over
Mike Rimel of Frederick County Mat Club and Levi
McDonald of Willie Walters before losing to Tyler
Bartholomew of Brunswick in the finals.
The tribe had on third place finisher at the
tournament. This was Matt Marshall, at Bantam 64
pounds.
Two fourth place awards were taken by Berkeley
Springs wrestlers. These went to Zack Woods in Midget
85 pounds and Preston Hovermale in Junior 74 pounds.
Other Berkeley Springs Junior wrestlers
participating in the event included Nick Amos, CJ
Ryan, Steven Shade, Jonathan Demaranis, Trevor
Jamison, Zack Risinger, Cohen Hovermale and Damen
Capper.
Berkeley Springs had qualified three other
wrestlers for the tournament who were unable to
attend. These included Chason Day, Caleb Canady and
Jesse Wolford.
Wrestling Programs participating in the event
included: Berkeley County, Brunswick MD, Boonsboro
MD, Catoctin MD, Frederick County MD, Greencastle PA,
Jefferson, Urbana MD, MD School for the Deaf,
Hagerstown PAL MD, Smithsburg MD, Tuscarora PA,
Williamsport MD, Willie Walters VA, and YMCA MD.
Tuesday, March 7
Mason Dixon Division A Qualifier
On Sunday, March 5, the Berkeley springs junior
Wrestling Club participated in the 23rd annual Mason
Dixon League Division A Qualifier tournament.
Wrestling Programs participating in the event included
Williamsport, Maryland; Greencastle, Pennsylvania;
Tuscarora/Mercersburg PA; Willie Walters/Winchester,
VA; Berkeley County and Hagerstown, MD YMCA.
The tribe took 32 wrestlers to the event and
recorded 24 individual place winners. Three wrestlers
were able to fight their way through the ranks to
bring home championship trophies for the team. The
team champions were Loguen McKee, Junior 70 pounds;
Cohen Hovermale, Intermediate 84 pounds and Richard
Marshall, Intermediate 98 pounds. In addition to
wrestling for the Junior League, McKee, Hovermale and
Marshall all wrestle for the Warm Springs Middle
School and participate in various travel tournaments
in the tri-state area each year. This championship
demonstrates that their hard work and dedication is
paying off.
Berkeley Springs also took home six second place
trophies awarded to: Steven Shade, Bantam 72; Jesse
Wolford, Midget 60; Jonathan Demaranis, Bantam
Unlimited; Zack Woods, Midget 85; Isaac Reed, Junior
74 and Zach Risinger, Intermediate 105.
Six third place trophies were awarded to Indian
wrestlers. These went to: Chason Day, Bantam 44; CJ
Ryan, Bantam 52; Matt Marshall, Bantam 64; Caleb
Canaday, Bantam Unlimited; Preston Hovermale, Junior
74 and Trevor Jamison, Junior 78.
A 4th place finish went to Nick Amos, Bantam 48
and Damen Capper, Intermediate 105.
5th Place medals were awarded to David Mundey,
Bantam 48; Garrett Morris, Bantam 56; Trevor Lineburg,
Midget 55; Levi Morris, Midget 70; Courtney Amos,
Junior 74 and Sam Brake, Junior 98.
6th place finishers included Dylan Steiner,
Junior 74.
First through fourth place finishers will travel
to Urbana Maryland on March 12 for the overall Mason
Dixon League Championship against winners from the B
Division qualifier.
