WELCOME! Wes Sunderhaus, Amber Conrow and Gregg Heller. Tuesday, May 27 The Road to Nationals - Possible Olympians?? Up next, in Prescott AZ, was the 14U A USA/ASA National Qualifier and ASA Regional Hall of Fame Tournament. Who would have thought you would need a jacket during the day at the end of May in Prescott. The weather was cold and damp and stayed chilly through out the Memorial weekend. The team got off to an unfavorable start, losing to Irvine Sting 2-1. This loss would mean the difference between playing 6 games, winning it out right, or playing 11 games coming through the losers bracket. The challenge was on and the girls responded. They ended up playing 2 games on Saturday, 3 games on Sunday, and ended up on Monday playing 4 games, back to back to back to back. It was a hard fought battle, but in the end, a couple of injuries and a lot of blood, sweat and tears earned the Hotshots the 3rd place trophy. In our 2 losses, both were 2-1 ball games, the opportunity was there to have had the outcome be in our favor. The girls showed even more softball maturity this weekend with the “give it your all” attitude we saw from many of our diving plays in the infield and mainly our outfield. The bats were alive as well, as we mustered up 58 runs to our oppositions 15. Pitching was strong, and it was nice to have the full battery of 3 pitchers getting the job done and dominating on the field. Possible inspiration could have come from our very own USA Olympic team. The families were fortunate to see a preview of the upcoming Olympians as they played an All-star team made up of previous college players and 4 High school players from this year. As we watched the pre-game hitting exhibition, you could hear the screams of “BUSTOS” coming from our girls. Watching them was definitely inspirational. Unfortunately the 3rd place finish did not meet the our goal of qualifying for Nationals. The top finisher from our region got a Hall of Fame berth which was handed down, as we already had ours, but it made the drive home a perplexing one, to go to Oklahoma to qualify or pass it by to qualify at the state tournament. Stay tuned!!! Monday, May 19 The Hotshots Return The high school season was something new for the ladies. The season was here and gone before we knew it with several of our girls participating in their state tournaments and even winning a state title. For our 8th graders, they combined with other ‘93’s to form the Spring Team, to stay sharp and tuned for when we would play together again. Now that time was here. Would they be ready for the challenge of obtaining a berth to the USA/ASA Nationals in Midland, Texas later this summer? If our first outing together was any indication, the answer is a resounding YES!!!! In the 1st Annual Pre Memorial Day - Hall of Fame Qualifier, the girls showed they had not lost a step. They outscored their opponents 44 -3 and obtained a berth to the Hall Of Fame tournament in Oklahoma City in June. As always, there is more hard work and growth to be accomplished, but the girls played well and we look forward to seeing them play in the future Sunday, January 20 Hotshots Victorious in Defeat In the realm of what some would call a present-day David and Goliath type game, the Hotshots 93’s took on the 18U Gatti Hotshots Gold team on elimination Sunday in the AZ Outlaws Gold Invitational 18U Gold Division Tournament. In front of a capacity crowd the young Hotties not only stunned, but earned the respect of the softball community by losing a heartbreaker 3-2; a game where they lead 2-1 through the bottom of the 5th inning. The girls started quickly loading the bases in the top of the 1st inning for Amity who promptly lined a 2-RBI single to right centerfield. Another rally in the 3rd inning forced a pitching change by the older Hotshots who managed to stop every run scoring opportunity thereafter. Unable to take advantage of easy-out opportunities in the bottom of the 5th inning, the young Hotties surrendered the lead before time expired. During seeding-Saturday, the Girls lost two other close games against the Killer Bees 6-4 and Desert Thunder 5-3 before beating the East Valley Pride 6-3. Only untimely mental and physical errors kept the Hotties from being victorious, however the Hotshots gained valuable experience throughout the weekend proving they can play anyone at any time. Outstanding weekend Girls! Keep working hard! Monday, January 14 Surfs Up in California for the Hotshots The Hotshots traveled to California where they competed in the Surf City Recruiting Tournament this past weekend. In game 1 the Hotshots started strong with a 10-2 victory over the RC Spirit with the highlight of the game being Amity’s estimated 220’ 2-run homerun bomb. A game 2 tie against SoCal 3D was a pitcher’s dual as each team could only plate a single run. Ashley managed to smash a triple for the Hotties only offensive outburst. Game 3 saw the Hotshots take care of the Tritons 6-1 with timely hitting and great defense. Amity made her pitching debut tossing an inning coming off months of inactivity due to injury. Games 4 and 5 didn’t fare well with the Girls as they fell short against the OC Curse 3-1 and OC Synergy 5-2 which made the long ride home even longer. The girls return to the diamond this weekend testing the waters in the 18U Gold division and look forward to the Challenge. Good Luck Girls! Go Get Em! Wednesday, January 2 Hotshots Take 3rd in 18U TCS Holiday Championship Coming off a rain-cancelled California trip, the Hotshots retuned home for an impromptu tournament entering the 18U TCS Holiday Championship. The Girls started slowly losing to the EV Pride 4-1 however quickly turned things around beating the Twisted Angels 7-0 and Scorpio 4-1. Coming to play on elimination day the Hotties continued their winning ways hammering the Intimidators 9-1 and taking out the Lil Saints 4-1 leaving only the AZ Storm standing between them and the championship game. Against the Storm the Hotshots had their hands full with solid opposition pitching failing to plate a run in three scoring opportunities. Strong pitching and defense kept the game close however the Girls fell short losing in 7 innings 2-0.Great praise from the tournament director was well earned as the Hotshots proved they can play with anyone. Great job Girls! Tuesday, January 1 Rain Washes Out Hotshots in California Devastated by statewide fires, California got much needed rain to the disappointment of the Hotshots and their promising start in the annual American Athletics Toys for Tots Tournament. The Hotties handled the Irvine Sting 2-1 in game 1 and lead the majority of the contest in game 2 against the nationally ranked Corona Angels before falling 3-2 in the last defensive inning. Unfortunately Mother Nature decided to intervene blanketing the fields with enough downpour to cancel the remainder of the tourney. The Girls will take some time off for the holidays returning for battle in 2008. Wednesday, November 19 An uneventful performance lead to an early exit in the TCS Bobblehead leaving the Hotties on the outside looking in heading to the Thanksgiving holiday. The Girls finished 1-2 in a tough Saturday bracket losing to the Desert Thunder and the Outlaws before salvaging their only victory on the weekend against the AZ Rebels. Sunday's early morning start had the Hotties falling short in a lackluster performance as they were eliminated by the Desert Wolves. The Hotshots will take a few days to enjoy what they have to be "thankful" for before tuning up for a trip to California in early December. Monday, November 5 Hotshots Attack in California 16U The Hotshots took their game on the road for the 1st time this season traveling to fire devastated Southern California and the Batbusters College Showcase. Having prepared to play in front of college scouts the past several weeks the Hotties hit the field running and with confidence. Game one – against the CA Cruisers proved to be a defensive struggle with only one run crossing the plate in the game. In the 1st inning Layla singled, Ally reached 1st safely on the third-base person’s throwing error advancing Layla to second base. Shelby singled to center knocking in Layla giving Ashley the only run she would need in the 1-0 victory. Game 2 - against the South Bay Diamond Girls, the bats woke up exploding for 12 hits. Layla was the hottest Hottie with a single, triple, grand-slam homerun, 6 RBI’s and 2 runs scored falling a double shy of the cycle. Karissa started off the 2nd inning getting on via an error, Analicia followed with a walk. Dani’s fielder’s choice preceded Layla doubling in both Karissa and Dani. Ally followed with an RBI single driving in Layla giving the Girls a 3-0 lead they would never relinquish. In the third the Hotties put together a two-out rally as Sianna reached via fielder’s choice, Steph singled, Karissa sneaky-bunt singled loading the bases. Dani’s hard grounder to short was misplayed allowing Steph to score and Layla followed with her second bomb to right center clearing the bases and completing the scoring 8-0. Game 3- against So Cal 3D was another defensive performance. The team was down 1-0 into the 5th inning when Marissa reached second on a throwing error. Ashley promptly singled to center and took second on the throw to the plate where Marissa was out on a close play. Layla stepped up bunting her way on before taking second base. Ally continued to stay hot driving in both with another sharp single giving the Hotties a 2-1 lead. The lead was short-lived however as a bottom of the 5th 2-run homer finished the scoring and the game as the Girls came up short 3-2. Game 4- found the Hotties waking up early to face the San Jose Lady Sharks in the cool, California misty morning. In the 3rd inning Analicia reached on a 3rd base person error before moving over to third and scoring on Layla’s sacrifice fly. In the bottom of the inning however the Girls lost the lead giving up 3 runs with only 1 ball leaving the infield. In the 6th inning the Hotties got a little closer as Ashley singled and was courtesy-run for by Layla. Sianna followed with a bunt that was turned into an error by 3rd sending Layla to 3rd. Layla promptly stole home on a pickoff attempt on Sianna at 1st. A single with a 3-base bad-hop error in the bottom of the inning turned into a 4-2 loss as the Girls could not tie the game on a late 7th inning rally with two base runners. Game 5- against the San Diego Lightning started slowly again for the offense with the Hotties having to come from behind as they gave up a run in the 2nd on a squeeze play turned into a double play that stopped a potential big inning and another run in the third. In the 5th Dani reached on an error in right field and was moved over on a Stephanie sacrifice bunt. A two-out Amity RBI triple scored Dani bringing the team within one run. Having seized the momentum, Layla lead off the inning with a homerun, Shelby singled and scored on a Michelle RBI triple and Dani drove in Michelle with a double giving the Hotties a 4-2 victory. Another good weekend for the Hotshots! Continue to keep working hard Girls! Sunday, October 28 Hotshots Finish 3rd at TCS Octoberfest 18U Two weeks of intense practices fueled the Hotshots to a 3rd place finish in the TCS October Fest where the Girls competed in the 18U division. On Saturday evening they opened the tournament with a 3-0 win against the Foothills Mustangs. Dani pitched a 12-strikeout shutout, Layla had 2 hits and Ashley had a triple. In a 5-5 tie with the EV Pride the Hotties fought back after getting behind exploding for 4 runs in a two-out 5th inning rally. Stephanie doubled, Sianna and Dani singled, Layla walked and Marissa singled leaving the game tied at 4. Each team scored in the 6th and the game was declared a tie. Sunday morning the Hotshots faced another tough foe in the Arizona Liberty with runs coming at a premium. Dani got touched for 2 runs in the 1st inning however finished the game blanking the Liberty allowing the Hotties to fight back with 2 runs of their own before finishing the game in another tie. In elimination play Ashley pitched her way to an 8-strikeout performance and 1-0 win over the Outlaws. Ally singled and scored the game’s only run on Michelle’s RBI double. The Hotties fell a game short of the finals losing their next game 4-0 to the always tough Desert Thunder finishing a successful weekend. The Hotshots look to take their gained experience to California next weekend. Outstanding weekend Ladies! Sunday, October 14 Hotties not so "Friendly" in Hotshots Round Robin 16U In an unsanctioned event featuring some of the top 16U teams in the state, the Hotshots 93 Hotties came away feeling good about their performance. In day one they started off well beating the Sugar & Spikes 6-0 before quieting a vocal Heatwave group 4-0. Against the Lil' Saints the girls quickly jumped out to a 2-0 lead before trailing 3-2 in the 5th with some charity softball. Upset about losing the lead the Hotties quickly tied the game in their half of the inning before the game was called in the bottom of the 7th and the team not getting its final at bat leaving the Ol' kiss-your-sister outcome. Day two matched the Hotties against a strong Desert Thunder squad and seasoned All-State high school pitcher. The girls were up for the challenge only down a run throughout most of the game before giving up late scores falling 5-1 for their only loss of the weekend. The Hotties finished the day beating the Sun Cats 5-0, a game they handled from the get-go. Offensively the girls continued to improve with several players hitting extra-base hits including two homeruns. The conditioning program is paying off as the Hotties ran the base paths with authority stealing bases, tagging up on fly balls and beating out throws. Defensively the pitchers continue to be strong striking out 40 against only 6 walks. The defensive Hi-lite of the weekend was a double play againsta squeeze bunt and stolen base attempt that eliminated a rally and finished the inning. Keep up the good work Girls its almost time to head to California! Sunday, September 23 Hotshots Compete in ASA Fall JO Classic - 18U The Hotshot 93's coming off a successful 2006/2007 season and a few months off, dusted off their cleats immediately jumping into a new season of challenging fastpitch softball. This was the team’s first tournament of the year and it was met Saturday with two pool games getting rained out! The ASA Fall JO 18U Classic gave the team a chance to compete against some very good older competition and allowed the coaching staff an opportunity to assess the new players to this year’s squad. The girls went 1-1 in pool play losing to a solid Tucson Elite 18U pitcher 2-0 and beating the 16U Americans 4-1. In Sunday’s elimination play the team competed very well against the 18U Sugar & Spikes team losing 3-2 despite out-hitting them, 8-2. Pitching was solid on the weekend leading the defense however the mighty offensive bats were uncharacteristically quiet. Overall, a pretty good weekend for the ladies!!!
